That was one of the first things I noticed when I got the game. They should've used the XBLA video. They could probably make the video crop to fit any screen resolution if they wanted to.

It's not just the resolution, it looks like the image quality also decreased.

Where did you get that texture? Megaton uses an mpeg video file and its not 512x512 nor is it squished.

EDIT: Nevermind, the pixel ratio I guess makes the video look right when playing under VLC.

The image quality is lower because the video was converted to early 90s style MPEG1, to play in the decade-old free "SMPEG" library used here. This is actually the same old video format used for the original release of the 1998 DNF E3 trailer. :) The Megaton duke3d.exe is currently not much more than a collection of other people's code glued together, so stuff like this is really limited by whatever file format they could implement without much work. In the case of the SMPEG library, the whole library is designed to render to SDL for its output already (no colorspace or surface format conversion required) so the amount of code General Arcade had to write to support video playback is within the realm of only a dozen or so lines.

Realistically, though, it's just the intro video to a re-release of a 1996 game. I don't think very many people are going to be concerned with it looking like crap.

Update on Multiplayer
Just wanted to let you all know we're very appreciative of your support for Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition. Devolver Digital is working with General Arcade to keep adding features to Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition over the summer but another project came up that we've asked they work on in May so the multiplayer will not be ready until July. While this isn't ideal, we think that the project General Arcade is working on will be very interesting to Duke Nukem fans and rest assured that we will deliver multiplayer, gamepad support, Linux version, etc.

My guess is they are waiting for one of the Eduke programmers to complete the multiplayer aspect of the game so they don't have to. Multiplayer is one of the main reasons people play duke. It is what adds countless hours of replay value. While Megaton is at it they should try and add support for TROR too! That would really kick ass!

I doubt the eduke thing to be honest.

And they are delaying updates to the game all together because of a deadline they have. General Arcade is just 2 people remember, I think this is a valid excuse so they can keep their job. The hate is getting really tired.

It looked like you were implying that they would take more code from eduke32 for free like they did before (and before adding credits) and making it seem like a bad thing. I was also talking in general with people here.

As long as there is forward progression i don't care what code anyone uses. Infact, I don't see why they don't use more EDUKE code just to speed up the process because Eduke is so much further ahead at the moment. Anyway, the way I see it from here is that this group of people should be working as a team to achieve a common goal.

However, in reality what is happening is people all working on the same tweaks over and over on different builds and no focus has been given into something that was broken in the process of trying to make the game look better. From an end user perspective the original Duke3d game worked just fine it was functional in both single player and multi-player. all these tweaks and patches in my opinion are small apples compared to the games functionality.

I say lets focus on functionality and polish the game later.

I have been coming back to this site for many years on and off. What keeps me coming back? Watching the brilliant developers at Eduke slave away to make this game perfect. I read and watch the synthesis build update notes on every release sometimes multiple times a day just to see what's going on even though its like trying to learn a different language for me. The skills and the intelligence of the developers at Eduke blow me away and I am fascinated with their work and what they have done to the game. They are the smartest people i've ever met and the thing is this website gives me the ability to keep in touch with them and they actually reply back to me.

If it were up to me i'd take the developers over at Megatron and join them up with the developers at Eduke to bring together one unstoppable kick ass Duke team. But that's just my opinion. If i'm right and this does happen then I demand some Duke Stocks and some stock options for suggesting the idea first!

So I've been hearing lately from some speculating blokes that the Megaton multiplayer system is being finalized for a July release. Anyone else got any better info?

Im curious if there gonna be multiplayer similar like it has been made on xbox read: episode maps only, leadeboards, and lets hope kick won't take 60-80 health points ?!? ;)

Tell me how do you want to see multiplayer in Steam and what you don't like in xbox version or other ports about multiplayer.

Xbox version isnt so bad it just doesn't have dedi servers which is most serious issue (other pc ports doesnt have it also) what i really didnt like in xbox version is inventory system, navigating between stuff it's just too slow i know xbox controller doesnt have enough buttons for all actions but i would stick with most important things like jetpack,roids threw out medikit to so called digital 'stick' axis so when u would move one of the analogs up/down/left/right it would use medikit, threw out nightvision and bright up the game exactly what you did in megaton edition (pc odesnt need it tho) not sure what i would do with holoduke, i dont like kick takes so much health but ok i can get used to it (in pc it is unacceptable) next i would add seperate bars for moving analog stick X Y, add analog stick aiming on/off or held in settings (held is when holding one of the button e.g crouch then you can move crosshair up/down) for making more free buttons (for invenotry items) i would threw out run mode on/off (come on this action is silly) and show map (if you dont know map then play single player before)
Nowim gonnal focus on things i would like to see in Megaton version, generally there is one main request :

1. Dedicated servers!!! That's idealistic request because im aware of that you won't have chance do this in 2-3 months maybe not even in a year so would be good if you could specify your plans for this in other words... per2per or client/server ?

No dedicated servers then give people at least this...

- Leaderboards used on xbox is a good idea
- support for playing online on usermaps
- team duke match from hduke port
- tag team support
- demo rewinding on xbox was good
- plus the things you guys already have on todo list (gamepad,linux,coop ..)
- don't forget about my request to the mouse settings

More to come later those are my first thoughts, let mel talk first with people they have played on dos days , xbox and nowdays then we will see what we can add to our Idealistic Duke Word ;)
PS. not sure what steam as a steam community can offer i have just installed this for Duke.
Edit. i didnt like noone had control over ranking server on xbox you couldnt change map,fraglimit or time and you couldnt kick only you could do just leave the room

Two more things, xbox didnt have 'show opponent weapon' and you couldn't hear opponents scream while shooting his is ass so you couldn't know if he is under 100 hp or above.

The game is 50% off on Steam today. I've already got plenty of copies of Duke 3D (I think about 6 or 7) but if you want to add this to your personal Duke collection then do so today or you can wait until the Summer Sale instead.

I'm pretty sure you guys are 100% correct and I would be very surprised to see a properly working multiplayer component in the Megaton edition anytime soon. Like you said maybe it'll happen... after EDuke32 gets it done...
