The PC version is a better game than the console versions IMO. But the graphics on the Saturn were pretty cool.

So I am bumping this topic for a good reason, the creator of Doom64 EX plans on doing a reverse-engineering project on the Playstation version of Powerslave after or during the development of Turok EX http://doom64ex.word...n-future-plans/

I'm not really sure, I've just always enjoyed it more. I guess the controls might be a factor, but I think I just prefer the "mood" of the PC version. I think it has more of that "special Bulid feeling", and I prefer the PC levels to the console ones.
Powerslave for PC is pretty high on my non-famous shooters list, but I seem to be quite alone in liking it that much.

That is interesting... and it seemed like he bit off more than he can chew doing Turok. Well, I'm glad he got over that. It'll be nice to have a more modern port of Turok as well. The old one was OK on 3Dfx Voodoo hardware but doesn't take into account anything remotely recent.

Well, being quite fond of Ancient Egypt in general, I loved the idea of a 2.5D FPS in this setting. I liked the first four levels (of the PC version that is) but haven't played much farther than that, as gameplay started to seem repetitive. I watched a few walkthrough videos of the later levels, only to have this impression reinforced.

I don't mean to say I don't like this game - I do, but it's one of those that I'd replay the first few levels occasionally just for nostalgia's sake (then again, I don't have that much time for a dedicated playthrough of anything ATM).

Bumping this thread looking for help...

I've reinstalled Powerslave on this computer using dosbox. However, the music doesn't play and sound also has a bit of latency.

I thought the music didn't play because I didn't use a real CD: the game requires the CD to run, and I set dosbox to think a folder with all the files of the CD was the CD drive, which ran the game, but with no music (and dosbox said "limited support" for the drive).
So, since I had tons of old CD-Rs collecting dust I thought I'd try to burn the game and use a real CD, but that still didn't give me music...

Any idea? I'm pretty sure the game uses CD music. What's weird is that music worked and sound was fine on my older computer and I'm pretty sure the installation was the same....

edit : i thought an alternative could be files of each music as well the list of what level plays what music but I couldn't find that either...

you have to mount the cd images in a folder in your games folder, throu dosbox.conf. I use ampshell to mount mine so I don't need to put any lines in the dosbox.conf.

I'm not totally sure how you mount them tho using just dosbox.

I see. I've found how to do that however it doesn't work, but I think that's because my CD image is .nrg and DOSBOX only supports .iso.

i'll see if i can make or find an iso, thanks.

What's weird is that I remember having music last time I played it on my old computer, yet I'm pretty sure I'm using the same files... Damn.

I use to know, but forgot this; The demos/shareware/betas may had midi in them.

Yeah you'll have to convert your images to bin and cue, or iso I think. I'm using bin and cue cd image.

.iso doesn't work for mixed mode CDs, you'd get only the data and none of the audio tracks.

DOSBox supports bin/cue and img/cue which both support mixed mode CDs. Mount the cue-file in DOSBox with imgmount.

Hey I just wanted to let you guys know that I logged quite a bit of time on the Saturn version a while back. It's so ahead of it's time it's not even funny.

It's literally Metroid Prime with a menu instead of an overworld.

There are areas you backtrack to when you get more skills, it's SUPER focused on exploration, the levels are extremely vertical, the difficulty is high, and although it can't be mapped to BCYZ for movement, the analog pad provides awesome control...the Saturn's analog triggers really seal the deal. There's all kinds of things just out of your reach you know you'll need to come back for. If you're low on health, you can return to an earlier level and collect health orbs.

The entire feel of the game is fantastic. It's awe inspiring and creepy, and fascinating.

Best 90's console FPS I've ever played, hands down. On PC this would be a gem, not the bland version that they originally created. This is a bonafide adventure game that's aged magnificently and I dig it.

Personaly I think the console version is overrated. "metroid prime before its time" is highly exagerated. What console Powerslaves do is they allow you to come back to previous levels to unlock new areas once you have new items... It's very far from Metroid Prime where everything is a huge connected world, plus we've seen this kind of things in other adventure games or platformers (and I mean, before Powerslave); and the consoles PS ARE adventure platformers, just in first person; with a bit of shooting. It's hard to even call them FPS.

The other problem is how most of the game is first person platforming.... first person paltforming is hardly ever good.

The PC version on the other hand, yeah it has flaws, but it teaches lessons of level design to anyone who thinks knows his shit about level design. Layout, pacing, progression are excellent. I'd go as far as saying the PC Powerslave is the apogee of Doom-era FPS level design in terms of good layout.

Thanks! That worked! I've actually found an image of the game in BIN/CUE on this site : http://www.abandonwa...=1179&fic=liens
If you're interested, click on "version CD' then "pour lancer le télécharger veuillez cliquer ici". That's Exhumed and you can use this image to install it in dosbox, then mount this image when launching the game and you'll have music.
This also has the booklet "Le manuel de Exhumed (9793 Ko icone)" and the musics in mp3 " Les 9 musiques du jeu en version mp3 (23'391 Ko )"

BTW I noticed that if you don't use real cd or bin/cue you won't just be missing music, you'll also be missing tons of sounds!

Just saw a bit of the game on youtube. The level design does seem pretty solid. Will it come to GOG at any point? Is there somewhere else one can get it?

You can't really buy it anywhere except for 30-50bucks on ebay. I highly doubt it will come on GoG or anywhere else.

Just use the link I posted above when I edited my post, it works perfectly.
Don't get repulsed by the controls of the game (you can't strafe while going backward/forward at the same time, so it's one or the other, and strafing is very slow ; plus, to look aruond with the mouse you have to hold a key. Personally I use middle mouse button for mouselook), trust me the level design is really fucking cool. The beginning of the game is good but a bit slow, it picks up after a few levels.

It only takes a few mins to install this in dosbox man. Use "imgmount d c:\[...]\exhumed.cue -t iso", the install the game, change the controls, and play!

I have several full version magazine CD's of Exhumed from back in the day.

A lot of magazine over here released it with a CD you got for buying that particular issue.
I think PC For All had the most releases of full games. another one was Tips & Tricks (which always came with a CD full of user mods/maps or a strategy guide)

Was a pretty good time to be a PC gamer.

Yeah, I used to buy a similar magazine special issue that'd come every 3 months with almost a hundred game demos, TONS of shawares and 3 (older) full games every time.
That's how I discovered Duke3D, Redneck Rampage, Exhumed, etc

and some issues also had mods/maps for games including Duke3D, it was pretty great. Without an internet conncetion I got to play plenty of DN3D usermaps, some of which know as classic oldies.

Yeah I had a crappy connection when I was younger, so those collection CD's were worth gold. :(

Man I wish I still had the CD which contained the first DOOM shareware version I ever played.
It has this menacing looking guy with a turban on the CD cover, stretching both his hands forwards (like if he is casting something or about to grab something)
I think that was from a movie and the CD had a trailer for it, something about a dagger.

Anyway, I spent weeks trying to get Doom to start, it kept hanging just as you entered the main menu. (this looks so exciting that I didn't give up on it!)
Of course I later solved it and you just had to copy the game to the HDD for it to actually work. oh! and I had to start the game with F5 because after windows was loaded there wasn't enough memory for the game. :D

I can't find this version of the DOOM shareware anywhere. the authors of the magazine edited the wad file so it contained Daleks instead of Imps and it's not the standard one you can fins all over the net
the ones there actually looked like pictures of an action toy or something. (like how the Doom enemies were made)

ah well, good time. I'm gonna go dig up my Exhumed PC and Saturn games and have me a marathon. :(

Just wondering, does the game support multiplayer? The booklet talks about a "network" key and a "send message" key... But nothing about multiplayer.

Hmm, I haven't played it for over a decade, but I have a slight memory that the PC version has some exclusive multi-player. (not counting the secret tank game)
I might be wrong though, but that's how I remember it. :(

The public beta version (PWRSLAVE.ZIP) is the only (known) release that has MIDI music. There's one track that is played in both beta levels. To the best of my knowledge, this track isn't like any of the CD audio tracks from the full game, but I'm not sure.

The PC version should have multiplayer, perhaps it's launched via the setup menu (or a separate executable). Even the demo version has one multiplayer map. I have never tried it myself though.

I just played LAW's map (the only Powerslave usermap ever made! It doesn't help that the game didn't come with a map editor..) and it was pretty alright! The last fight was pretty cool. Makes me feel like trying to make one myself, but according to what LAW's says in the TXT of the map, it's pretty painful.
