Free alternatives to classic/well known games

No Daggerfall or Arena in that list? They are both free, and Daggerfall isn't that different from future TES titles so you could consider it a free alternative.

Both even have custom made installers that make them a sinch to set up

Oh, while we are at it:

Manica Manion Mania: http://www.maniac-ma...om/index.php/en

A lot of short adventures, set int he Maniac Mansion universe. All with retro graphics. Unfortunately a lot episodes are in German only (you see the supported languages beneath the screenshots).

If you know German I highly recoomend Maniac Mansion Begins, the inofficial prequel to Maniac Mansion. http://www.maniac-ma...ion-begins.html

Yup, at some point I had those on the list but then I decided to focus exclusively on free-from-the-start, non-commercial games, as opposed to "liberated" (formerly commercial) titles, which are actually well documented elsewhere:
Wikipedia - List of commercial video games released as freeware
Liberated Games
Remain in Play
Juegos Liberados - this blog is in Spanish but well worth a visit, as it is probably the most comprehensive, frequently updated database of liberated and non-commercial games on the net.

[Edit] Hey, it's a Duke Nukem clone! (well not exactly but the guy looks like Duke Nukem for sure)

For some reason I am getting a kick out of "IDEE SOFTWARE" I wonder how long that name lasted for ;)

Probably not worth a separate thread, but here's some shareware clones I was also going to include on the list but then decided not to. They're mostly DOS games obviously, and some more or less interesting. There seems to have been quite a few clones of Ultima games and Mario back in the day. Again, I have tried to only include original, legal games (there exist a number of illegal Mario ports for DOS, and other things like SFIBM).

The list below includes games that are: a) originally distributed via the shareware model (some have become liberated since and are marked with a L) and ;) are straightforward clones or share a significant similarity with some popular game titles.

Command & Conquer

Diablo

Doom

Duke Nukem

Exile series

Metroid

Might and Magic series

Mortal Kombat

Sonic the Hedgehog

Street Fighter II

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Kart

Ultima I-V

Ultima VI

Ultima VII

Warlords

Wolfenstein 3D

X-COM: Enemy Unknown

Whoa, I have never seen Quiver before ;)

Quiver has a rather functional engine comparable to Doom, however the game itself has generally quite uninspired, repetitive level design (and monster graphics are also rather artistically lacking to say the least).

Quiver is pretty boring, I played it a long time ago and didn't think very highly of it.

My first impression of Quiver was very negative but then I thought that the guy who wrote a Doom-like engine from scratch all by himself (IIRC that's what the readme states anyway) deserves some respect. I assume that with some proper level design it could have been a lot more enjoyable.

There's an Ultima VIII inspired shareware game believe it or not...

It's called Blind Justice

I've also noticed gamers.org has been down for a while apparently. While it had idgames2/ (one of the last mirrors for that) it also had that uwp-uml mirror and 3dportal. What went up with that?

I noticed problems with gamers.org a few days (maybe a week) ago, but when I checked later it worked okay again. So I thought that maybe it was under maintenance or somesuch. Now it doesn't seem to be working again. No idea what's happening but hopefully it will be operational soon.

gamers.org is still down ;) However, its uwp-uml archive is in part mirrored here:
ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/msdos/games/

Also these mirrors have some uwp content:
ftp://ftp.padua.org/...os/games/local/
ftp://ftp6.de.freebs...os/games/local/

[Edir] Here's an idgames2 mirror, no idea how complete it is:
ftp://ftp.fu-berlin....games/idgames2/

Apparently the HTTP part of gamers.org is preserved by the Wayback Machine:

Following suggestions in another forum, I have updated the list with these titles:

Total Annihilation

Minecraft

Half-Life: Counterstrike

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

Hell yeah! How did you think I became such a good mapper! All that practice making Shaw's Nightmare since 2007 of course!!

Geez there are a lot of Mickey's out there. Somebody must be taking the mickey Posted Image

And boy that thing sucks, it's lucky if it was made on a Wolf 3D port, most likely doom though.

Have you guys heard of locomalito's games? They're free, retro inspired and very good. http://www.locomalito.com/

Maldita Castilla was compared to Ghouls n' Goblins.

Don't know if the games are big enough since there are numerous clones for the original out there.

But hey. Some shameless selfpPimpage:

I once made a combination of Puyo Puyo and Dr. Mario,

This Pac Man-Clone combines elements from basically all the Pac Man-Clones from the old times (Pac Man, Ms. And Jr. Pac Man, Turtles, Nibbler and the unique Odyssey 2 versions of Munchkin and a few others)

I think Hydorah is on the list - I was just too lazy to add all the games B)

Do you do the artwork with the voluptuous ladies too? Looks like the style that used to be popular with German developers in mid-90s (e.g. the works of Carsten Wieland).

BTW, the GameJolt link in your sig seems to be broken.

I only do the "concept-sketches" and have somebody who makes proper graphics out of it. The above are early works of him when he wasn't used to digital painiting on a tablet yet (he got better, here is a NSFW link of somthing from 5 years ago: http://evilflesh.dev...-No-2-125959705).
I dug that stuff out as I want to port a few of the games to iOS and Android (and maybe Win Phone ... maybe).

Will check the gamejolt signature-link later, thanks.

Added Blacklight: Retribution as a game similar to the Battlefield and Call of Duty series following a suggestion in another forum.

Here's a very neat game in the style of Wolfenstein 3-D and Ken's Labyrinth called Gun Godz.

Gun Godz is amazing.

Hmm, I thought that this topic was for free, libre and open source games under some GPL license.
Including a game like blacklight retribution would be incompatible with that.
