360 Demo Leaked? Do not support piracy!

This leakage story reminds me of Crysis 2.
Days before this game's publication, the whole game leaked in a beta version.
But Crytek didn't tried to blackout anybody, they instead made an announcement where they asked fans to support the real game and not download the leak.
Do you think they where right or wrong ?
Should 2k/Gearbox do the same,or are they on the right track by deleting youtube videos and banning members of their forums ?

I think they're trying a "solution" that reminds me of the DRM mindset some companies think of OMG the game will be pirated let's put even more and more DRM on the game to fix the issue.

While that other company tried a solve akin to Let's trust our customers...after all, inconveniencing them even more is just gonna lose us sales and trust.

It's a fucking demo, not the full game. They're WAY over-reacting. Instead of working the whole day on their own forums to close/delete posts or chasing people, they better should do something for their sooooo important FAC cummunity.

It's just censorship, plain and simple. They're not solving the problem by punishing forumgoers. The Gearbox moderators aren't even warning people to not talk about it, just issuing bans for what they deem as supporting piracy. I was banned for THREE MONTHS for asking if the demo was the same as what was shown at PAX.

I have this program called VectorWorks. It has some good security against piracy. It's basically an AutoCAD clone from what I can tell. I only used it once. It used this USB device to interact with the program to be used as like a license key. I think it'd be cool if they could incorporate that design into Duke Nukem Forever. I think that might work a bit better for people trying to stop piracy. I know it won't stop it, but it could slow it down.

You mean a fob/keychain thing? Some WOW players use those to secure their WOW accoiunts I think.

So it's a matter of trust.
Gbx/2k doesn't trust their costumers enough and believe that if the game gets leaked everybody will pirate it,while Crytek believes that their costumers will be honest..

Do you think that the leakage of the demo has any connection with Randy's statements hours before the leakage ?
Yesterday Randy spoke on Eurogamer and said very bad works for the hacker community, calling them terrorists.

http://www.gameinfor...pport-sony.aspx

A few hours after the anti-hacker speech, the demo started flowing around the web...

Yatta, you're doing the right thing to help GBX in blacking out info. The less the public knows, the better!

Maybe...who knows.

Still, I also frequent The Witcher 2 forums and when news that a possible TW2 version was being leaked on torrents was talked about on their forums, they didn't ban anyone from talking about it.

- Thank you to those who understand that we're in a tough position.
- No, no one's getting banned.
- The demo can't be too far away now, so all these restrictions will probably be lifted any day now. New 360 demos come out every Wednesday I think. Maybe that's the day?

I was given an unremovable infraction for just trying to tell Gearbox about what the Hackers were doing. Fantastic. I don't want to offend Gearbox Software, but as soon as they did that, this video popped into my head.

Yatta, Demos are uploaded onto the Xbox Live Marketplace on Tuesdays.

And one more thing, when Joe sent me the infraction I was about to send him this video:

But I didn't want to make things worse.

if so, those so called "hackers" are a bunch of cunts. real hackers won't do that. don't believe me? think again.

Yatta:
I thumbed you up. Not only because of the positive response. But also because i like the good news that the demo might soon come out ;) Can't wait man.

And i agree, These pirates aren't hackers. They are cowards. When i think of hackers i think of good and useful people. These people are just lame, and good for nothing.

I think the whole story is a hacker warning..
I'm not a hacker (I don't even know how to use microsoft office) but I know their mindset, how they act.
Hackers are a very united and vengeful community.
The PSN attack was a retaliatory measure hackers did against Sony, for suing the kid who released the ps3 main code breaker..
Each one protects each other..
I strongly believe that hackers released the demo as a counter measure against Gbx.

Beyond that,I guess how a company reacts to such stuff has to do with marketing strategies, which seem to vary.

I'm worried about the quality of the leak. The second level is completely broken. Also the load screens haven't been properly titled. It also wigs out and crashes for almost no reason with a reload needed to continue.

Judging by that it could be a while before the demo is released.

Yeah it's Tuesday. Although, I wonder how that will work out for FAC members and everyone else. Would the FAC be on a Tuesday, and everyone else would get it a week later or something? That's interesting to think about...

"I got a better idea."

"What?"

"No fucking way!"

The worst GBX has done is give whiny, bitchy, basement dwelling fanboys on two different forums a reason to shit up threads and buy Tampax Corporation stock.

There hasn't been an international "OMG FUK GBX" movement like there was with Sony.

Here's what happened:

Someone was in a position to have access to these files.

He then shrieked like a Japanese schoolgirl and said "OH MY GOD! DUKE NUKEM FOREVER! I MUST SHARE THIS! THIS IS AWESOME!"

Shit leaked.

The. Fucking. End.

It isn't a conspiracy, it's some faggot with an Internet connection.

Yea, one week is a lot of time when the game is already released in under 4 weeks.

But it's apparently an old build. Also remember Randy's reason for the delay is there were still some "A bugs" they had to fix. The game is finished now and in console certification so I think the demo will be ready soon...also Gearbox has said the demo will involve parts of the game we haven't seen before.

Dude seriously? You're going by a leak to tell you the demo won't be released for a while? It's either the PAX demo, or it's the Titty City demo. We already established that by the fact that someone pointed out that the poop doesn't leave streaks on the walls. Also if that were the case then that would apply to the entire game wouldn't it? I don't see the logic in that seeing as how the entire game is already finished and in certification.

Seriously, think about it.

The final build could have been finished months ago, the demo is a completely separate entity.Your argument is invalid.

It's not completely seperate, it has the same code base in nearly all aspects.

Chances are these guys are just reprogramming and re-scripting small amounts of code so that the game doesn't freak out when looking for files that don't exist, and possibly adding a custom ending.

Save for maybe a few "BUY ME!" screens and that said ending, what difference is there? Not much. Same engine, same content, all the bugs have been fixed, you just have to change a little bit of code so the game knows where everything stops.

I mean, hell, I got the freakin' UT99 beta demo playable on full version servers with just an hour of file swapping and config changes. It ran without a hitch, save for the fact it had to download fucktons of content. I didn't even do it for piracy, I was just bored! And I ain't even a programmer!

Also I am glad this leak happened on the consoles because if this happened on the pc, all shit would be put on pc users like the usual case.

Heh, yeah that is the one good thing about this.

If only pirates could somehow be enticed to hit consoles and leave PC alone for a while... long enough for companies to go, "Oh crap... we favored consoles and shunned the PC market because consoles were unpiratable... oops."

I wonder if our old 3D Realms friend is responsible for such harsh crackdown.

Anyway, each ban at that forum is a new member here. That's an observation, not a theory.

The ban's are per Gearbox's rules set in place by pre-existing Community Manager's and Chris. GBX has a zero tolerance for piracy/illegal downloads discussion. The rest of us on the team just enforce the rules GBX sets up.

The game won't do any flopping. It's leaking, so there is interest. Who said 13 Fridays are bad? Well maybe for T2 or Gearbox, cleaning up, or trying to lol Posted Image

The game isn't leaking. The demo was taking off Xbox Live through an exploit in the system.

I'm against piracy and I never bothered downloading a pirate game..
But I wonder why is it supposed to be bad to download free something that is supposed to be distributed free ?
;)
I mean,I don't think they would charge people to play the demo, right ?

This "version" of the demo was acquired illegally. People hacked Xbox Live through an exploit and removed private data. The demo will be released to all for free, but obtaining anything (even a demo) before it's intended release date through the means of hacking and removing (stealing) the data is considered wrong/illegal and is strongly looked down on by GBX and 2K.

You can't judge the quality of the videos you are seeing. This demo was ripped from Xbox Live's servers and is not the complete demo. It has been hacked together and is in flawed condition. Do not use this as a judge of the quality of the demo and or final game.

None of that explains why I got a 3 month ban for asking if this was the same as the PAX demo. Without warning. And in the middle of a discussion with dozens of people who were talking about the same thing. Chris or Adam had a bitch fit on me a few days earlier, accusing me of starting "platform wars" which was totally unfounded (and coincidentally came when I asked the validity of some year old A:CM screenshots), and was looking for a reason to ban me for a long time. According to my Gearbox forum profile you guys have constantly been monitoring me on a daily basis. The Gearbox PR people (Adam and Chris) are some of the worst I ever encountered on any video game forum.
I read the forum rules there and nowhere did I violate anything. In fact, you guys let so much other crap slide if you actually enforced them the place would be totally empty. The constant one word posts spamming such brilliance as "this" and stupid internet memes, people actually attacking each other based on their platform preference, it's been going unnoticed for a long time. Then you have Shodan who moderates the Aliens boards. He gets knee deep in arguments that go on for pages. Then when he is backed into a corner decides to end the whole thing with some crap like "ok guys get back on topic or I have to issue infractions". You're all nuts.
