one should know how to defend themselves properly - be it pepper spray, fighting techniques, or in extreme cases being that person that other people may no know what you'll do (like sticking pointy things in eyes)

Completely impossible for me. If someone REALLY pulls a dick move, I have to honk, give them the New York Salute, and speed off loudly. I don't get furious when I drive, but if you pull a dick move you're going to know about it. The shit people do on the roads out here is downright terrible. Worst drivers in the nation.

I have to drive 75 - 125 miles a day in big city traffic making pickups and deliveries. If I had road rage I'd be dead from the stress by now. So I've learned to cope by being humorous. And passive aggressive.

For instance, if I see someone in my rear view mirror speeding and bouncing from lane to lane I will speed up just a little bit to lure him into my lane. Then after he takes the bait I slow back down to the speed limit or a little less and trap him in my lane for a while.

On more than one occasion someone laid on their horn because I didn't take off instantly at the green light. I put my truck into park, got out of the truck and leaned up against the side with my arms folded and whistling.

Another time someone beeped their horn because I wasn't making a right turn on red. Again I got out of the truck and walked over to the huge sign at the roadside that said NO RIGHT TURN ON RED. I pointed at it and the driver laughed along with me.

Another favorite in the warmer weather when drivers have their windows rolled down. Someone takes off from the light like a bat out of hell and I take my time and go the speed limit knowing the timing of the next lights as I do. When I pull up along side the speeder I know they are going to repeat their actions so I smile and tell them "see you at the next red light". Many times I do. Some get pissed but most won't make eye contact.

There are more examples but I'll just leave it at I like to mess with the idiots. Its my own little way of dispensing vigilanty justice when the cops aren't around to catch them. Plus it feels good.

If it was a quick toot of the horn I would have taken off. But when they laid on the horn big time and threw up their hands going WTF, that is what prompted my response. The others behind us just went around. Too bad the idiot couldn't because he was stopped just a couple of feet from my rear bumper. He couldn't go around until he backed up.

I spent the first ten years of my life living in Cleveland and Indianapolis. New Yorkers don't just drive like shit, they drive straight up dangerous. I returned to Cleveland back in January and it was like a breath or fresh air. First time driving in the Midwest. The hypervigilance needed for driving out here is terrible. Every week I have at least three close calls that could have turned into accidents if I wasn't paying attention.

That describes Phoenix. Those fuckers drive like the world revolves around them and nobody else on the road matters.
A good example of their particular style: most people know their exit is coming up in a couple miles and start making for the off ramp lane. Not there. They wait until they're almost on top of it then fly over from the far lane without even bothering to use a direction indicator or even looking to see if it's clear to get over. Just turn the wheel and go - people will get out of my way style.

I've had a lot of people refuse to get back into a car with me, not because I drive dangerous, I just drive like a psycho (if I know where I'm going.) I think I'm Steve McQueen or something. When my mom was in the hospital for six months, I was making a 70 mile trip most days, sometimes twice. I got to where I could make an hour and twenty minute drive about an hour. I also just got a big check from my insurance company for being a safe driver for all of my teenage years. Hardly anyone ever does this according to my agent.
