I'm with Mr.Flibble here, the name is misleading... Having said that, the media seem to prefer just "Climate Change" these days.

It's not that I don't believe in it, I just don't think there's anything that can be done to stop it; I used to be a right environmentalist in my teenage years, but after some research you soon learn that the earth has a natural cycle that can not be prevented.

Rather worryingly, power cuts have started in my area now and it gets very cold. I have a feeling that I might be investing in a kerosene heater in the near future as I'm frightened of gas and don't have a supply to my house.

hell is mentioned in the bible.
most of those "this or that" aren't mentioned stories are usually caused by some religious offshoot. i.e. jehovah's witnesses use the king james version of the bible, but they twist up the interpretation (like most organized religions) to mean what they want because they don't want to believe a merciful god would send souls to hell.

The word "hell" is an English word. You get references to Gehenna in the NT (Jesus talks about it a bit in Matthew). Gehenna was a fire dump outside of the walls of Jerusalem.

The concept of a punitive afterlife is Greco-Roman but even then, it is mythological (Tartarus). A punitive afterlife seems to be something Jesus or at the very least the Jesus followers (Matthew's community)...created isn't the right word, but they talk about it. I think I can safely say that they at least bring it into the European mind as something. I'm not sure off the top of my head if any of the Mishnah or other rabbinical sayings talk about a punitive afterlife.

In most ancient Mediterranean cultures, the afterlife was just a bleak existence. In the Aeneid, Achilles tells Aeneas that he would rather be the slave of the poorest man on earth than a king of Hades. The Psalms talk about how no one praises God in Sheol because the dead don't praise anyone. This is probably why the Sadducees didn't believe in a resurrection or afterlife - any reference to it in the OT is rather bleak or non-descript.

The Indian people seem to have a punitive afterlife by name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naraka).

It seems that when the Bible made its way into Latin, it got mixed into Hell (fire pit) http://en.wikipedia....ll#Christianity

JWs don't use the KJV. They use the Watchtower. The KJV has a correct translation of John 1:1. Although it does use "Jehovah" it is only does so a few times (4, to be exact). JWs have a little bit of Arianism, a little bit of Subordinationism, and even some Gnosticism. They are fun but not when they keep coming back to go through their stupid booklet page by page...

JWs believe in hell...at least I think they do. I didn't know there were any groups out there that didn't believe in Hell. Hell appears in the KJV. Between the KJV and Dante (and some others) the whole common conception of hell is derived.

Thanks for that info. We had several lengthy encounters and a few booklets around and I forgot where they ended up on the hell thing. Now that I think about it, I might remember a snippet in the booklet about non existence and how much it would suck.
