hell is mentioned in the bible.
most of those "this or that" aren't mentioned stories are usually caused by some religious offshoot. i.e. jehovah's witnesses use the king james version of the bible, but they twist up the interpretation (like most organized religions) to mean what they want because they don't want to believe a merciful god would send souls to hell.

Because you lived a cruel, vindictive and hateful life, you meet your fate in the Styx.

Level 5, harsh. Love the last bit, "some people just deserve to die".

The word "hell" is an English word. You get references to Gehenna in the NT (Jesus talks about it a bit in Matthew). Gehenna was a fire dump outside of the walls of Jerusalem.

The concept of a punitive afterlife is Greco-Roman but even then, it is mythological (Tartarus). A punitive afterlife seems to be something Jesus or at the very least the Jesus followers (Matthew's community)...created isn't the right word, but they talk about it. I think I can safely say that they at least bring it into the European mind as something. I'm not sure off the top of my head if any of the Mishnah or other rabbinical sayings talk about a punitive afterlife.

In most ancient Mediterranean cultures, the afterlife was just a bleak existence. In the Aeneid, Achilles tells Aeneas that he would rather be the slave of the poorest man on earth than a king of Hades. The Psalms talk about how no one praises God in Sheol because the dead don't praise anyone. This is probably why the Sadducees didn't believe in a resurrection or afterlife - any reference to it in the OT is rather bleak or non-descript.

The Indian people seem to have a punitive afterlife by name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naraka).

It seems that when the Bible made its way into Latin, it got mixed into Hell (fire pit) http://en.wikipedia....ll#Christianity

Now I'm mildly interested in this and if I hadn't just decided to stop studying NT for a PhD (and stop at an MA for now) I would take time to study it. Right now, however, I have to figure out how to pay rent and eat food and not move back to my parents' basement.

Je vous présente, Bruce Timm, my favorite comic book artist:

He's mostly known from his work on the Batman animated series, particularly for creating Harley Quinn (the art, that is):

("Arleen" refers to Arleen Sorkin, the voice of Harley Quinn.)

There's tons of sexual innuendo in Timm's work, and he's at his best drawing beautiful, curvy women, as is evident.

JWs don't use the KJV. They use the Watchtower. The KJV has a correct translation of John 1:1. Although it does use "Jehovah" it is only does so a few times (4, to be exact). JWs have a little bit of Arianism, a little bit of Subordinationism, and even some Gnosticism. They are fun but not when they keep coming back to go through their stupid booklet page by page...

ah. then it must have been JW offshoots that i talked to. they claimed to be JWs and starting flipping through a KJV to show me references about there not being a hell -only death and eternal blackness - and only so many people actually get into heaven (they referenced the # of people who get to sit at god's table - 144,000?). They also went on about how only god's choosen get into heaven (jewish people) and that heaven was already full.
I asked them if heaven's already full and there's no such thing as hell, why do they bother with religion at all? i got no answer

JWs believe in hell...at least I think they do. I didn't know there were any groups out there that didn't believe in Hell. Hell appears in the KJV. Between the KJV and Dante (and some others) the whole common conception of hell is derived.

Thanks for that info. We had several lengthy encounters and a few booklets around and I forgot where they ended up on the hell thing. Now that I think about it, I might remember a snippet in the booklet about non existence and how much it would suck.

I just checked my e-mail, AOL has a news thing before the e-mail appears and I can't be the only person seeing this...

Hey! Whoa! I just read the whole page, Roger Ebert's dead? Oh no. Oh damnit no. No. :)

Damn it, he was one of the few critics I actually respected. My sympathies.

What's the meaning behind the line in Address Unknown (that TV show in Max Payne 2) where the guy picks up the phone at the end and the conversation goes:
"John Mirra?"
"Yes, this is he"
"This is John Mirra, welcome to the next level."

Then the guy starts screaming Posted Image

Or there is simply no meaning. It's propably supposed to be weird and not making much sense.

Fuuuuck I just formatted my PC. Basically all of a sudden I couldn't run Windows, and after re-installing XP a dozen of times and formatting my main HD, I managed to make it work by installing it on my other HD. It probably is fucked up.

Now I must install all my programs again...

Run Drive Fitness Test by Hitachi. It's 3MB in size and is a bootable CD.

I don't even fuck with that weird shit anymore. If I get odd behavior when installing, I check the disc for scratches, then I run DFT, and if that passes, then I run MemTest86+.

Only if you're stupid enough to have backup on the same drive.
