No it doesn't, I can do anything I want with XP. And I don't need 3D menus or touchscreen to navigate through blue screens.

I should have stated may speed up a computer. However, you have a point, it does depend on the software and hardware you use. Posted Image

I have Windows 8 and I use the desktop more than I do the start screen. Of course, I like that I can hit the start button and just start typing for what I am looking for and it shows up (usually, if I have it installed).
If I had a touch screen, I would probably use the MetroUI more, but I don't have a touch device. I do like the new Windows phones that are available but none of them are available for my carrier (and I'm not going to jump carriers to pay more a month, no matter how much I may want a Windows phone).

LOL XP fanboys (poorfags) up in here

One word: DirectX. Enjoy 9.0 and it's slow as hell FSAA implementation!

Might as well build a Windows 98-95 PC, as that has none of the 16-bit/DOS compatibility issues that XP has.

This. I <3 my retrobox. P233MMX, 64MB RAM, 4MB S3 ViRGE and a Voodoo 2 12MB. Runs 95 like a fucking boss.

I love how Windows 8 looks like 90's AOL.

Mine looks nothing like the picture above probably ripped from a MS page.
Attached Image: myWin8.jpg

but, of course, I spend more time in the desktop using desktop apps. If I had a touch device, I'd probably use more of the other stuff.

Why are you comparing starting screen with a desktop?

Status report; Have been in Windows 7 for 6 hours without shutting it down yet.

Does this count as getting used to it?;

:)

The only thing I need is a replacement for that volume mixer, as I need to adjust those in real time (i.e; without scrolling) and don't fancy spending £400 on a mixer when I know the computer is already capable. Anybody know a good one? Powermixer and SoundControl are useless. Of course, as a last resort I might try hacking the applet to increase the window size.

Easily one of the best features of the Windows 7 (and 8) Start menu is the quick search. You have removed that in place of having to use the menu itself? That makes no sense, man. I can get to any feature of the control panel by typing it in when I hit "Start" (both in Windows 7 machines at school and my Windows 8 computer at home). That is a hell of a lot faster than trying to get to it through menus and tabs and pop-ups.

Not for me, but I use the keyboard to operate the menu (and practically everything else) so I would dislike it because the box is selected by default. I rarely use the Start Menu anyway, why do I need a menu of shortcuts? That's what the desktop is for and failing that, I'll use Explorer or hit Windows Key + R. I use the Start Menu for tools mostly and with my way of using it I bet I can get to anything faster than you could (only by a millisecond or two) with less clicks. Also, I prefer the organization of the menu, everything is always in the same place. The accessories menu is a mess though, not sure what MS were thinking with that, but a bit of dragging and dropping fixes it.

I could enable the search, but personal preferences and all that, it's what works for the individual user at the end of the day, something Microsoft forgot. With the right hacks installed it is a very flexible OS.

There is that. But then people have to do extra steps to install things and no one likes to do that; we like immediate gratification.

In that regard the best feature of Win7 Vista is UAC.

So far there has not been a reason to install another Windows, I can use all softwares I need.

And why would I want to change my desktop from this:

To something like this:

Don't be dumb. This is the desktop in Windows 8:

Like I've said before... if you know how to work with a PC you'll barely be in the start menu at all. How much time did you spend staring at your start menu in Windows 7? :/

It seems to me there really are a lot of misconceptions about Windows 8. I can't blame you, I had my doubts about trying it as well... but I gave it a shot and I'm content with it. Performance is better than Win7 and I don't mind the start menu at all..

1. Who's Cedric Haegeman?
2. Euro Track Simulator 2 :)

Still, I prefer keeping almost everything in the start menu leaving desktop clean. Except some txt documents.

If people don't look at your pic this post will probably seem a bit odd.

I also try to keep my desktop clean. I used to not have a whole lot pinned to the taskbar but since Windows 8 changed the start menu to a screen, I decided to pin the things I use the most to the taskbar.

Yep.

Also, certain software I use is not supported by Windows 8. I mean, it runs, but the people who make the software don't provide support for anyone that runs on Windows 8. They support Windows 7 though.

I'll probably be running Windows 7 until the "end of life" support, whenever that may be.

I applied for a contract position that, based on the description, seems to indicate that the US government (or one department within it) is migrating from XP to Windows 7.

There are lots of places that aren't using 7 because they haven't (or don't want to) upgrade their software to software that works in the new OS. So many companies are concerned about backwards compatibility and so many end-users don't want to pay what it cost to either change software to a new one or to upgrade to a compatible version.

i have win7 on the house computer. tweaked to my taste so on the surface it looks and acts like win xp. i have another hard drive laying around somewhere. i may motivate myself to put debian linux on it someday and have a duel boot box.

the wife has win 8 on her laptop, but other than adding a start button to the taskbar at her request, she won't let me mess with it. she knows i like to pull everything apart to see what makes it tick and things have a tendency to stop working the way she wants when i'm done with it.

Yes. And there are database software suites out there that corporations and libraries use that are older and don't work with the latest anything. In fact, the CMS that my school uses is not compatible with IE9. I'm not even sure I can get it to work properly with IE8 anyway. I remember that my old school didn't upgrade anything past XP because finances or something used some out of date software that "worked" and needed XP. So many things to try to make work and some people just can't be bothered.

Like I said, the US government organization is hiring to contract people to go migrate their computers to 7 from XP...whatever they were using that required the XP set up is apparently not being used anymore.

What about using XP Mode? I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard it is useful.

That was something holding me back, most of my Video, Imaging an Audio programs will not work under Windows 7, but as the Copyright notice on the start screens says 1998, I decided it was time to upgrade (such as that Vegas 12 I got, damn CUDA rendering is the future!).

Governments are always behind, most of the millenium bug nonesense was because our government were still using punch cards in accounting or something. And these are the people that think they can police the internet... Rather concerning to say the least.

Vegas still uses CUDA? Holy shit. Everything uses DirectCompute/OpenCL now.

That's really weird considering how dismal the 600 series compute performance is. My Radeon 6970 runs a train on the 680 in some benchmarks.

#8447

It does OpenCL too.

The ATi's are better at some things, such as stupid Bitcoin mining, something to do with ALUs vs CUDA/Fermi cores.
