re-installing XP

Why?

#8407

Sounds like drive problems to me too.

On a similar note, I decided I probably wasn't fair on Windows 7 calling it useless when I installed it on a pretty useless computer. I have decided that as I added new RAID drives to replace to old ones some time ago, that I could use the old ones for Windows 7 (as they are still in the machine not doing an awful lot) in my workstation, that way I can try to do some actual work with the OS and at the same time keep Windows XP so I can switch back when I get a headache and try Windows 7 again later when it's worn off. The eventual plan is that using Sony Vegas and Media Express, I'll stop noticing how much I dislike the OS (I will never like 7, didn't like XP much either to be honest) and learn to get on with it, eventually never booting the XP Partition again.

Rather ominously, my computer has had a black screen for a few mins now, but as there is intermittent drive activity I will assume it's working. I'm surprised it works at all, had to install from USB because it needs a driver for my drive controller, which obviously controls the DVD drive making it impossible to install that way.

On the plus side, I can install that copy of Vegas 12 at long last, only went and got the 64-Bit version didn't I? So I could not use it before, it'll be nice to have that CUDA support! :)

Oh, as I am writing that black screen disappeared, it rebooted quick, yay!

Ignoring that next April XP will no longer be receiving any updates from Microsoft, it is already a lot less secure online than Windows 7 or 8.

There are lots of reasons to install something newer than XP on a primary (gaming or work) machine. If you are building a legacy gaming PC, then XP away and just make sure it isn't going online to strange websites or you'll have to reinstall it again.

Or stop going to internet from account with root privileges. Like everyone should anyway.

Might as well build a Windows 98-95 PC, as that has none of the 16-bit/DOS compatibility issues that XP has.

There is that. But then people have to do extra steps to install things and no one likes to do that; we like immediate gratification.

I am looking for a job on Craigslist (last time I made $300 in 3 days, so, hey, why not?) and I checked out the "gigs" in my area...

It actually got more fun as I went down the list. Apparently "talent' is the place to post about taking pictures of boobs. There seems to be one guy in the area who is willing to pay $50 to college girls to take off their panties for him (and give them to him, apparently) or to show him their breasts for his personal collection of photographs.

Seems like a lot of work and money for something one could get for free.

Fuuuuck I just formatted my PC. Basically all of a sudden I couldn't run Windows, and after re-installing XP a dozen of times and formatting my main HD, I managed to make it work by installing it on my other HD. It probably is fucked up.

Now I must install all my programs again...

I've done that before. I made a automated Windows install disc and when I set the thing to auto format and create partitions, it formatted the wrong drive. Fortunately, I had backed up most of my stuff on that drive several months ago. Otherwise, I would have been hooped.

Other thing was the drive that Windows was installed on was not the first drive installed when I built the system, so it must have formatted the first drive I had instead of the one which Windows was on. The first drive I had installed on that system was a Western Digital Black drive, versus Windows was on a Seagate drive. It was the WD drive that got formatted.

Think Windows works like that. Where drive 0 would be the first hard drive that was in the system when it was first built, and not the first drive and partition when you first install Windows.

Long story short, no more automated installs for me.

So far there has not been a reason to install another Windows, I can use all softwares I need.

And why would I want to change my desktop from this:

No it doesn't, I can do anything I want with XP. And I don't need 3D menus or touchscreen to navigate through blue screens.

I should have stated may speed up a computer. However, you have a point, it does depend on the software and hardware you use. Posted Image

I have Windows 8 and I use the desktop more than I do the start screen. Of course, I like that I can hit the start button and just start typing for what I am looking for and it shows up (usually, if I have it installed).
If I had a touch screen, I would probably use the MetroUI more, but I don't have a touch device. I do like the new Windows phones that are available but none of them are available for my carrier (and I'm not going to jump carriers to pay more a month, no matter how much I may want a Windows phone).

Mine looks nothing like the picture above probably ripped from a MS page.

but, of course, I spend more time in the desktop using desktop apps. If I had a touch device, I'd probably use more of the other stuff.

Status report; Have been in Windows 7 for 6 hours without shutting it down yet.

Does this count as getting used to it?;

:)

The only thing I need is a replacement for that volume mixer, as I need to adjust those in real time (i.e; without scrolling) and don't fancy spending £400 on a mixer when I know the computer is already capable. Anybody know a good one? Powermixer and SoundControl are useless. Of course, as a last resort I might try hacking the applet to increase the window size.

Easily one of the best features of the Windows 7 (and 8) Start menu is the quick search. You have removed that in place of having to use the menu itself? That makes no sense, man. I can get to any feature of the control panel by typing it in when I hit "Start" (both in Windows 7 machines at school and my Windows 8 computer at home). That is a hell of a lot faster than trying to get to it through menus and tabs and pop-ups.

#8428

Not for me, but I use the keyboard to operate the menu (and practically everything else) so I would dislike it because the box is selected by default. I rarely use the Start Menu anyway, why do I need a menu of shortcuts? That's what the desktop is for and failing that, I'll use Explorer or hit Windows Key + R. I use the Start Menu for tools mostly and with my way of using it I bet I can get to anything faster than you could (only by a millisecond or two) with less clicks. Also, I prefer the organization of the menu, everything is always in the same place. The accessories menu is a mess though, not sure what MS were thinking with that, but a bit of dragging and dropping fixes it.

I could enable the search, but personal preferences and all that, it's what works for the individual user at the end of the day, something Microsoft forgot. With the right hacks installed it is a very flexible OS.

In that regard the best feature of Win7 Vista is UAC.
