Yes. Console and Arcade Gaming far predates PC gaming. Ever heard of Pong? The Odyssey? The Atari 2600? The NES?

at first I thought this was great news, still excited to see Duke, no argument there, but over the past few days I have really come to despise the Gearbox Forums. Which is why I'm here now. I've been sitting on the 3DR forums for so many years, then all of a sudden, we were shut down and moved over there with a bunch of kids who know nothing about Duke or his history, who want to argue that Borderlands is better, it was freakin ridiculous, hopefully here I will fit in more as this is a community who's sole purpose is DNF.

Aw come on Wieder, stick around. :)

Why?

http://forums.duke4.net/index.php?s=&s...ost&p=53224

I'm not trying to be a whiner... just recognizing the writing on the wall and that the writing isn't for me at this time.

I want to be excited about the game despite throwing away nearly a decade of my career on it. I want to be excited for the guys who still have their fingers in the pie and refuse to give up. I want to be excited for people who truly want to just play a Duke game and throw some pipe bombs and shrink their buddies. So that's what I'm gonna focus on.

I don't need to convince the internet that "my bros" deserve more credit than they are getting, convince fans that putting a major FPS release on the consoles is far more difficult than a handful of people can do out of their house (especially when they've never done it), or any other thing that we want to wax on about. You could put Scott and George in two different rooms, ask them the same questions, and likely get surprisingly different answers. It's not because they are liars or trying to trick anyone... it's because people are different and that affects everything. Including anything I say to you, but I'm not trying to sell you anything anymore, least of all myself.

I'm up for a game of Duke Nukem... and that's what I'm going to get... and I'm going to be happy. :)

Calvin: "If you could have anything in the world right now, what would it be?"
Hobbes: "..Hmm..."
Calvin: "Anything at all! Whatever you want!"
Hobbes: "A sandwich."
Calvin: "A sandwich?!? What kind of stupid wish is that?! Talk about a failure of imagination! I'd ask for a trillion billion dollars, my own space shuttle, and a private continent!"
Hobbes (later, fixing a sandwich): "I got my wish."

----

Besides, I don't have much more to offer since I can't join in on the speculations really without just being a wet blanket all the time. :)

Ah hogwash. You're part of the community. Some people think DNF will be the second coming, some dont. It doesnt ultimately matter. Its all about us being a community.

It matters to my sanity. I know too much (yet also not enough), and care too much about the real human beings on the other side of the speculations and yelling for it to not matter. :)

Thus why I'm eager to re-insert into the community once we have the real game to tear into each other over, I can maybe help out with some mod efforts, etc. :)

Well today at the GBX forums the user 'Pikachu' insulted me and I have no clue why! He just seems to hate me. Some people.
Well I hate how things have become now. I will see if the GBX forums can replace my old home 3DR...but I guess they won't. I'm not even opening those nitpicking threads, just following the trailer or demo thread.
And here some people are also poisening the atmosphere. I know we are very tolerant here, but we should consider consequences some times. If a few people destroy the experience of the majority of users, there's something wrong! :)

So true Jobi! same exact thing happened to me, a few bad apples, and that's why I've migrated over here, finding a new home after 3DR shut down is like telling a hobo his shack is going to be bulldozed :)

we should start our own damn forum, call it: duketards.net or maybe douknoukim.com :)

oooo!!!

I like that!

the splash page could be earthquake victims all coming into a giant tent that's been set up to treat the wounded. "We're the refugees that lived through shock and awe day, also known as Disclosure Day, also known as D-Day, and lost our homes in the madness."

ROFL I LOVE IT!!! :)

Pikachu you say? Outstandingly that piece of shit managed to get me banned twice, because of how much I insulted him after he successfully trolled me to hell and back.
That guy is the most annoying and negative piece of shit of the entire internet and he is so damn good! He is perfect! I get trolled just by seeing his avatar and user name. He is the ultimate champion of trolling. He actually made my blood pressure rise for the first time in 5 years!
He is the biggest ignorant superficial flaming troll that has ever existed and he has single handedly made me hate the Gearbox Forums aside from Joe Siegler!

- Lawsuit over, 3DR survived and are most likely happy to be rid of the IP.

- All the former 3DR guys finally get to show off their talents & hard work.

- Pretty much (if not) everybody has new jobs, and we even got a new developer out of it.

- Gearbox got the keys to a one-owner classic, and they'll make it scream & shine.

- We all get a game we've been waiting forev. . . . umm, a long time for.

How is this not good for everybody? Look, it's not the way I ever envisioned it turning out, and there will certainly be some things I won't like about the game. But if it's still Duke enough for me to overlook those things, It'll be alright. So this thread really needs to end, IMO.

Why not allow others to state their views too? Surely you can't be absolutely right and expect everybody to agree.
For ex, my views on gearbox getting this, even though they coincide with yours I still refuse to agree with some things.
For ex, I don't agree with "Gearbox got the keys to a one-owner classic, and they'll make it scream & shine."
Yeah they got the keys to it but how can you be so sure that they will make it scream & shine? Especially when some ex team members said that the game is 95% finished and that gearbox is just doing console ports and from what I understand piranha is actually doing the console ports and optimizations and mp for the game, which leaves Gearbox doing absolutely nothing other than making the contract with the retailers...

Because that's not the thread for this. People should stop turn everythread into "zomg, gbx banned me, what a loosers". There is a shit thread(that's going to get locked, though) - post about gbx there.

NES didn't predate Apple // and the C64.. and those where big on gaming. The Apple // is as old as the Atari 2600 and has many fans who ended up in companies like id and 3D Realms. In fact many IBM PC games where ports from those two computers.

But yeah consoles like the Magnavox Odyssey and arcade games do pre-date personal computer gaming.

How about that Tandy Color Computer 3 (TRS-80)? That thing was both a PC and a game console. I still have mine. Takes cartridges, 5.25" floppies, and cassettes.

Forgot about it, yeah it's about as old as the Apple // although the Apple // and C64 where both bigger with game developers AFAIK.

Settle what? I did say there are consoles\arcades that predate personal computer gaming... what I also said though was that the NES doesn't and named a few examples that predate the NES much of them as old as the Atari 2600... and so did MusicallyInspire name an example.

Could you elaborate?

Didn't arcade and console gaming predate the PC?

No...

Now you know :)

Hey, guys, guess what...a console is just a computer built explicitly for gaming with a custom OS (older ones had less base storage, but still had an OS of some form either on the ROM or a small drive).

There is no point in arguing...computer gaming is as old as "console" gaming because it is the same thing.

Get your logic out of here, this is the DNF section of the forums. :)

To be fair, i don't really think Gearbox should own the Duke IP, but they should finish DNF
Duke Nukem owned by Gearbox, i am just worried that the next Duke games won't feel like Duke Nukem anymore, but more something like Borderlands

Why? Allen Blum and a dozen + other guys from 3DR work at Gearbox, and would likely work on the next Duke game.

that doesn't matter much, look at who their managers are, the guys making the money, this isn't about a small team of guys anymore, its about "ok how much money can we make out of all this?" the gaming industry has been conformed and subsidized since the days of D3D. It's not just a bunch of guys working out of their basements anymore, 3D Realms was still like that up until the lawsuit, and now Duke has been sold off.

Any way you cut it, The last time we will ever get a true to life Duke experience is if you fire up Duke Nukem 3D again, everything else, including whatever Pitchford slaps his name on, will be tainted. Could still be great, I'm not THAT grumpy :) but will be tainted nonetheless.
