HRP White Squares
#1 Posted 27 August 2010 - 04:25 PM
Well, I had it working at one point, but now, its not working correctly, I guess you can say its either missing textures, or at least it looks like it. This ONLY occurs when I run the HRP. To get a rough idea, picture the game loading up like normally, then when the title comes up its all a white rectangles over top the background page, then the menus are all white rectangles, and bits and pieces of the game are white rectangles, or just white versions of their shape. So, any ideas what I can do?

According to other posts on this, the new ATI drivers don't play nice with HRP. Advice has been to roll back your driver.

Edit:
Err, scratch that. Even if I wanted to roll back, I couldn't... My driver doesn't have the option too.

As it has been said you need to back date your ATI driver to version 10.5.

Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Uninstall all ATI software and drivers, restart, install driver 10.5.
How hard is that?

Thats a pretty messed up assumption to come to that conclusion.. I really wish I could tell what video cards people are using by them not giving any to very little information and by them apparently not reading something... I'll tell ya, your right though. But don't go gettin cocky or arrogant about it. I'll tell you why I didnt provide such info, and I'll tell ya why I never read THAT... When I signed up I did a search.. I probably searched the wrong thing, as I had no idea what exactly I'm looking for. Its why I made the thread, so I could find out exactly what Im looking for. And from what I can tell so far, thats exactly what happened. As far as not giving so much information. I figured it would have been asked for within the thread, since it hasnt been yet, I haven't bothered.

2. Give me the money for a new card? I don't have enough to do so.

Well...Thats not hard.. However, that is incorrect. When uninstalling drivers, your should remove them from the Device Manager, found within the Control Panel, not remove them through Programs and Featers/Add or Remove Programs. Yes, Im running on vista. I just need to go digging for an older version and go through all that crap again.
Edit: Well, I put the driver back down to 10.5. Works great. So thanks.

That's your opinion, but we like them because they work

All the people who turn up here and complain of having strange display issues always have an ATI card. And they all say that ATI are the best. And all the people with Nvidia cards who don't have to spend a large chunk of their lives trolling around forums finding out why stuff dosen't work on their cards just shake their heads.

Of all things, you had to put your two cents in for that? Your right, it is my opinion, but, its also a fact in my case. I hate it for my own personal reasons. But anyways, I already said thanks, and the problem is solved... So....Thread end.
#8 Posted 30 August 2010 - 01:08 PM
Also, don't worry, Tea Monster. I'm an ATI user and I hate ATI. Not everyone is like that. I've been longing for a good nVidia card for once for ages.

If you have polymer turned on, the ATI will crash you.

So i just keep polymer turned off... hmm, my game also crashes if i try using autoload & dukeplus on eternity & other episodes so i need to use somekind of DUKEPLUS_RESOURCES :/ any idea why this happeens ?
#14 Posted 04 September 2010 - 03:15 AM
As I really do not see the point in playing without polymer....
On top of that I will certainly NOT roll back my drivers for just one game, and even if I did the game would crash on me on a regular basis as has been said before.
#15 Posted 04 September 2010 - 03:53 AM
Playing with normal HRP or Polymer HRP in polymost mode is still great fun.
You might try a somewhat older [Polymer-] build:
http://dukeworld.duke4.net/eduke32/synthes...100425-1623.zip
(Which is the version I currently prefer.)
#16 Posted 04 September 2010 - 04:05 AM
It's pretty obvious that he won't be working on an ATI fix then.

I might try that older version, thanks.
-Edit: Nope, same problem. What I think is strange is the fact that the Polymer-Renderer only works (if you can call the missing text "working") if I set "Custom game content directory" to "none" and check the "enable autoload folder" function.
On top of that I noticed when playing a level that the "Laser Pistol" was using the Polymer model, whilst everything else was just a texture.
Any ideas why that did happen? oO

So the problem to the missing text should be something else, right?

Apparently the driver problem is related to eduke32 as a whole, not only the polymer renderer.
So the only options left are:
- Retry svn1623 with your current installation (not much hope I guess)
- Roll back ATI driver (I know you won't)
- Wait for a fixed ATI driver or a fixed eduke32 version
Bad news, sorry.

I'm getting white squares in Mapster after going back to 10.8. Is there a way to mess with the texture filtering via the console?
#25 Posted 13 September 2010 - 06:50 PM
gltexfiltermode = 2 (mine is 2 which I think is trilinear)

I'm playing lots of games and I have never, ever encountered a problem like described here.
But it's true, we get white squares in Duke menu's with some of the latest builds of eDuke and we have crashes when putting Polymer on on the working eDuke versions.
I hope a fix will be found in the future...

Also there seems to be a memory leak which causes sectors that you aren't in to stop drawing after a certain amount of time.... which seems to increase when you add more RAM leading me to believe that it's some kind of memory leak. Since it takes longer for it to happen with more system RAM installed. This has been happening for several revisions of the OS and its drivers going back to when Polymer was first written.... and it doesn't happen in any other game or Polymost so to me it seems like it's a Polymer issue.... and it's not just with my computer because I noticed the guy who compiles the OS X versions of eDuke32 has the same problem on his computer with the same video card (you can read about it in the discussion area at that page).
Some people can't change their video cards. So just "get nvidia" isn't the answer. To be perfectly honest nvidia works better for some things and ATI works better for other things..... and this is especially true in other platforms.
Due to eDuke32's cross platform nature I hope these issues get sorted out sooner or later because if it doesn't work on both popular brands of video card on windows very well how's it going to work out on Linux or Mac?

What does that have to do with NVIDIA? Oh, wait, I know the answer--absolutely nothing, because you were dealing with the warranty department of whichever card manufacturer you bought from, not with NVIDIA. Most of those manufacturers make ATI cards too.
