Keep in mind, the anniversary for the full release isn't until April. January was just the shareware.

Yeah, but 2021 is also the 30th anniversary of the series, so it's not just one specific date to keep to.

Eh, I think it's fair to complain here. This is a big year for Duke. 25th anniversary of the game we all love, and 30th anniversary for the whole franchise.
But we all know in our heart of hearts that we're the only ones who care. Gearbox sure don't give a damn, the gaming community at large couldn't care less; only us and some of the other fans of this style of FPS probably even noticed, much less will think anything of it.
Being lamentful over the mistreatment of a franchise on a notable anniversary year is fully justified I think.

I don't know, Nordic/Embracer has seemed pretty interested in bringing back old IPs with far less clout than Duke.

Unfortunately, I fear the same. In fact, no matter what they'd release - good or bad - I'm pretty sure most people will be whining anyway, especially the die-hard fans.
Bringing back to life such a strong and cult character as Duke after such a long time and especially after how much shitstorm even DNF has caused is a most delicate job, and going in it just for the numbers and commercial success seems like an easiest route to failure.

Well, THQ Nordic at least could release all the Duke materials and make a worthwhile and proper DN3D re-release if not even a remake (though I'd rather settle with re-release), and after that they could even make a good sequel too, same goes for re-releases of the other Duke games (Time to Kill, Zero Hour, etc). I have no doubt THQ Nordic would gladly cooperate with Voidpoint and make HTTK collection a thing, and even more than that. However, the problem is that GB wasn't acquired by THQ Nordic itself, so GB still has the same employees (and Pitchford), with DN still being its property. Until new owners clean the house or somehow find a way to claim DN to themselves, things definitely won't change for a bit.

If this is anything like Bethesda buying id Software, don't expect a single thing to change. Bethesda doesn't interfere with id and THQ Nordic/Embracer may not interfere with anything with Gearbox either.

Well, ZeniMax at least greenlighted Doom and Wolfenstein. In fact, I wouldn't say that modern id Software is fully independent now that I think about it, especially compared to GB with 2K.

2k doesn't own Gearbox though. That's not a fair comparison. They're just a publisher.
