No music - what is wrong?

#1

Okay, I can't get the music packs to work and I'm a total noob to this. I've read documentation after documentation to no avail.

I am running eduke32 (non polymer and polymer) and I've put the packs in \duke3d\duke3d\autoload - nothing
in \duke3d\duke3d\autoload\duke3d.grp - nothing

The packs I'm using are the eduke32_mus.zip and also trying the musicpack_sc55.zip - neither of which load.

Do I need a commandline argument? I've selected the directories in the mod pulldown and still nothing. I've even extracted the .zip's so just the .ogg's are there and nothing.

Also, I suppose the standard midi output no longer works?

Please help! ;)

I am _not_ using HRP yet, just eduke32. Does the HRP need to be installed? Thanks.

update: I installed the HRP and _still_ NO music? The option is greyed out in the config menu - it says it is on, but it really isn't and I can't change it. Help please ;)

Okay - that was pretty lame.

I checked the eduke32.cfg file and lo and behold

MusicDevice = -1

-1 ?!?!?!

I changed it to be 8, which matched

FXDevice = 8

so now it looks like:

MusicDevice = 8

And... it works! Not sure if that is how it should be, but it works.

Well, now it doesn't work again - this time using the polymer_hrp.zip in addition to the standard HRP zipfile. With the standard HRP file, it works, with the polymer_hrp.zip file - I now get .midi music and now the musicpack music which is .ogg's and sound great.

What gives? Are the music packs tied to certain HRP files/version and the order they load or something?

HRP by itself, music pack works
HRP plus polymer_hrp, music pack doesn't work but midi music does

?????

Any ideas?

The polymer_hrp.zip by Parkar should be repacked (with 0 compress):

1. Right ckick on polymer_hrp.zip and choose extract here

2. A folder with the name polymer_hrp will be created

3. Enter polymer_hrp folder and then mark all the included files and folders. now right click mouse and choose add to archive.

4. Create a new zip file with the name polymer_hrp.zip and with 0 compression (store)

5. Put the new polymer_hrp.zip in autoload folder

6. Download and install openal:

7. Play

Thanks for the steps. I tried those last night with the .zip I downloaded and it got the spiffy effects working - but - no music. ;) OpenAL is initializing fine, at least according to the log.

I also used TortoiseSVN to connect to the repository anonymously, check out the files and then made a .zip of all those as well. The graphical effects work but - the music does not. One interesting thing to note is I renamed the polymer_hrp.zip file to duke3d_hrp.zip and guess what?

Lo and behold renaming the polymer_hrp to duke3d_hrp caused the music to start working! Odd I tell you??? Anyways, the music worked but the graphics were slightly porked and the shine and specular was not working correctly anymore. Only if both the duke3d_hrp and polymer_hrp reside in the autoload directory do the graphics work correctly - but - if they are both there - the music does _not_ work correctly.

Weird eh?

OKAY! I fixed it!

Sometimes the silliest things are all it takes.

Eduke32 autoloads the mod packs in Alphabetical Order. Yes, Alphabetical Order. If your music pack is loaded before polymer_hrp is loaded, the music pack doesn't work. The music pack has to load after polymer_hrp loads.

So, M,N,O,P,Q,R,S etc. - P before Q, and in my case, eduke32_mus, E comes before P. So I changed it to be qeduke32_mus and it started working immediately.

I think this needs to be fixed?

So, to recap:

WHEN you are using the polymer_hrp with the duke3d_hrp (which you have to right now), IF you want enhanced music to work, you have to make sure that it loads the music AFTER it loads the polymer_hrp pack. How does eduke32 do this? ALPHABETICALLY. So you rename your music pack so the first letter comes after the first letter of polymer_hrp (which is P) in the alphabet, so it loads last. i.e. make it be Q or something after P.

I think I talked about it.

This is not a bug. The files in autoload folder are loaded in alphabetical order.

Just rename eduke32_mus.zip to xeduke32_mus.zip and it will loaded last.

I personally load eduke32_mus.zip manually with batch file. I prefer batch files. I have more control on what to load and in which order.

I named my Saturn and N64 music packs with a "w" prefix, because "x" belongs to the Duke D.C. HRP.
