Anyone still play this?

I do a yearly playthrough on the PC version since I enjoy it so much. DN:F is a very unique FPS. Kinda wish more games had miniaturization.

I replayed it about six months ago. Did a bit of multiplayer, too; though it's getting harder to find games.

I replay it maybe once a year, turn on game speed to about 150%, turn on invincibility and instagib and infinite ammo, and that makes replaying the shitty parts like the turret sections more tolerable.

I always found the optional turret sections to be much better if you just ignore the turrets.

I play the main campaign one year, and then the Doctor Who Cloned Me the next year, repeat. Sometimes split between six months. I've learned to enjoy DNF if I follow a set of rules:

1. Never use ammo boxes unless absolutely necessary.
2. Skip certain levels I don't like. Often times it's hard to notice the difference.
3. Turn off the stupid dialog when NPCs are around, and during the Hive. Duke's silence says more in that level, makes the overall game darker.
4. Play my own Duke music in the background.

Quite a ritual but it works.

TDWCM was pretty good tbhngl, especially driving the moon buggy, that part was dope. The Burning Bush map was a nice palate cleanser between the fighting and felt comfy (and that sexy scientist lady bending over when you first enter was bonerific)

Yeah, for some reason the DLC was indeed more enjoyable. Maybe because it felt more cohesive? I'd play it again just for the DLC.

I agree, and it makes sense, as the DLC was something made afterwards, and not a 12 year old, strung together game.

TDWCM was actually just content that was cut from the main campaign.

I have to be a contrarian here and say that IMO the DLC is worse than the base game. It has some good parts, and even some improvements, but overall I think it's a step down. (Though to be fair, add-ons generally are)
Large parts of it feels more like a mod than a professional add-on.

It always bothered me that the strip club and brothel were void of combat, since those are the levels that most resemble classic level design with the various connected parts etc. Felt like a real wasted opportunity, and I think they could have been made into fun multiplayer maps also.

if it was all literally cut stuff we at least wouldn't have the clashing art styles. It looks really bad with all the girls together at the end when they so clearly are in different styles and quality; disregarding that they reuse models from actual "characters" as anonymous NPCs.

I remember George stating the DLC was actually all new original content created after Gearbox got the rights and DNF was finished.

I instantly knew this was bullshit because stuff that was in the leaks, both from the plot leak and all the screenshots, ended up in the DLC

Yes, I still play it from time to time: I activate cheats and fly around certain maps (Vegas, the desert, outside the Hoover Dam). I find it relaxing, especially with my homemade VR headset.

Not the moon level. Nowhere in the leaked screenshots, concept art or world chart is a moon level ever mentioned.

I don't think there was anything about the brothel either, but I could be wrong.

Part of the trouble is in defining if it's "cut" stuff or not is; by "cut" do we mean actually created assets and content being cut, or planned but never implemented stuff being cut? Makes a bit of difference.
Obviously the DLC was not all new ideas, most likely not all new assets either, but they didn't just have a completed slice of game sitting around finished for half a year.

Imagine being such a retard that you think I mean it was literally just snipped off of the completed game and sold to us. Jesus fucking Christ you never cease to amaze me with how much of a fucking idiot you are, Altered Reality.

Shit was clearly cut out of the game because of time constraints, they needed to get the game out of the door. It's why the main campaign is so clunky and doesn't make any fucking sense. It's literally missing a quarter of what was planned. Almost all of that quarter was cannibalized into the TDWCM. Of course there's new or reworked content.

When was the date of this tweet? I remember the one I read was right before the DLC released.

It is also entirely possible I am getting George mixed up with Randy Pitchford or Scott Miller; it was one of the three that mentioned the DLC was all entirely brand new content. It was afterall almost 8 years ago and I ain't getting younger (holy fuck its been 8 years)

I'm almost 100% that was Randy. But, again, define "brand new".

I've been highly tempted to reinstall it and have a playthrough.

I keep remembering the bad bits.'Douche Nukem', the awful scripted Boss battles, the way that the President can't look you in the eye when he's chewing you out. I have no idea why, but that last one really bugged me.

Surely, it can't be as bad as I remember it? Can it be, as infamous-and-now-dead ex-Doctor Who Producer John Nathan-Turner said "The memory cheats."?

One of these days, I'll find out.

IIRC, wasn't 2001 DNF kinda ahead of its time with head tracking and detailed eyes and all that jazz? That makes it extra painful, when ten years later the game doesn't live up to the decade old trailer on a technical level.

I noticed this when I was playing it. I thought it was odd. So I moved to where I would be in 'eye contact' with the President. He then moved his head so he was yelling off at a 20 degree angle! It completely removed me from the scene. A vital plot point is occurring and I'm there trying to see at what point I break the targeting system.

There were more than a few instances of that during the game. I remember seeing the poker chips during the casino section. I stopped what I was doing as they looked like textures from the Quake build! I was reminiscing about how that texture managed to survive all that upheaval without being replaced or deprecated. I recalled that when I was reading those articles about DNF all those years ago, this texture was part of the game, and here I am, so much later, seeing it on a poker table with my own eyes, finally.

I remembered many times over the years, when I was waiting for a bus or something similar, when I would imagine reading those articles about the Quake build and see how far my life had come in the intervening years. I would wonder how many years it would take to be able to play the game and what I would be eventually doing when it finally released. I recalled my Brother and his partner, who was a community mapper, who both didn't live to see the game come out.

Granted, a lot of the de-immersion is due to the time frame of the game's production cycle, but even accounting for that, there were too many moments that took you out of the narrative.

The brothel was mentioned in 1999 in an article from VoodooExtreme, which also stated that two of its rooms were named "Paula Jones" and "Monica Lewinsky"). That was one of two things about that article that left me perplexed, because I couldn't see how it fit into a game where you'd explore Area 51; the other was how it kept constantly referring to Dr. Proton as "Dr. Piston".
It could be that the brothel was an experiment from 1999 that was recycled for the DLC: after all, there's a donkey outside the brothel, which serves no purpose but was supposed to be used by Duke in the first Unreal iteration of DNF.

I wouldn't be surprised if the scripted movements and the event-based reactions were based on completely different functions which cannot interact with each other due to being written by different people, each of whom unaware of what the others did, during the various project restarts.
I just made a little test: if you use cheats to spawn a MILF or a kid (they won't have any cutscene attached to them, but they will react to events in the game world), and then you spawn a rat, they will run away from the rat. If, on the other hand, you spawn a rat while those characters "recite their lines" in the casino, they won't react at all, as if they were mere clockwork mechanisms which can only do what they were preprogrammed to do.

There are other instances of old material surviving a restart.
- The Duke Cave level shows a spinning wireframe model of the Lady Killer casino on a screen. That looks nothing like the actual building in the final game, but instead, it looks exactly like a 1998 concept art by Paul Richards.
- The poker machines in the Lady Killer and strip club levels have the exact same interface as those in the 1999 casino screenshot.
- The strip club level contains the "Booty Juice" neon sign we saw in the 1999 stri p club screenshot.

Imagine being such a retard that you're assuming for some reason that your accusation should not be taken literally, when other games on the market actually withhold vital parts from the main campaign to sell them later.

One thing that bothers me in DNF ... but also in almost every other game that has them ... the textures on parcels, books, magazines* and all the stuff in the Duke Burger kitchen look almost always out of place. They are usually too clean and too bright and saturated compared to the rest of the environment.

*) Not those in DN3D, for example, as they use the same palatte as the surroundings and thus blend in

Anyone ever play this on a Mac? Is the four weapon carry update included? Load times faster than console? Thinking about grabbing a copy for mine.

Out of interest, can you spawn the mothership? Does it just sit there in midair or does Duke get crushed? O_O

Probably Runny Shitfart, he has a reputation in the industry for being a bullshitter tbhngl

He said the game was "the length of four or five Call of Duties" too

The only thing stopping me from replaying this masterpiece is that my GPU can't handle 60 FPS on 1080p.

Going to answer myself! I picked DNF + DLC up on Steam for 8 bucks. The Mac version has pretty fast load times, the 4 weapon expansion, better graphics than the consoles of course. It easily brings the game up from my personal rating of 4/10 to 6/10. I'm actually excited to play this game again. There is still some lag that the PS3 version had but not nearly as much.
