DNF 90% Complete Goalposts Shift to 2002 Build  "3DR wants to release it, but it's up to Gearbox"

BTW at this point, when something great happened to the community, stop pointing the fingers on George, Scott, Randy etc. There were enough time to thrash these people, now we should start focusing on the assets instead. I hope the D3D betas will follow.

Even at this point, George, Scott, and Rendy are motherfuckers. I've been waiting for this game for 25 years!

Artists need limitations and deadlines to truly shine. An artist has to stay hungry or they will flounder.

Which is why I'm still convinced that ditching the Quake2 version was a bad idea, and they should've just relegated the Hoover Dam part to a prerendered cutscene. For example, by having Duke nuke it from the EDF base.

I noticed when you're in game you can customize the main menu's background. There's some weird stuff in there like a classic Everquest HUD, and some porn images.

Does anyone here know more about that rumor of a build from 2002 which is supposedly almost complete?

Gearbox Software and 3D Realms were both acquired in 2021 by the same company (Embracer Group and Saber Interactive respectively, the latter of which is owned by the former). Imagine if the leak of the 2001 build was just to gain attention and they eventually end up releasing a finished 2002 build for purchase. I mean why would a group of leakers put in the effort to patch an unfinished build instead of just releasing it?

A few tweets were made in January which sort of confirm that the Duke has not been forgotten

They're under the same umbrella but new-3DR has almost no hope of making a Duke game if his current actual owners think the brand is poison.

The current owners think the brand is poison.

I just muted the Duke4.net Discord's DN channel...because shit went so fast(messages keep going) and full of George and Randy haters blaming them and other hate shit, which I just lost my interest.

Not too interest on the leak since I just too busy on other shit...still never expected the leak actually happened, and yet still lot of people "cared" about the DNF 2001.

Do you mean Randy Pitchford? I'm kinda just hoping that the acquisition of Gearbox Software may make this possible after all

It should, but it seem like lot of people still like to blame, not celebrate. Sure, I don't like Randy.
And Scott and George fucked it up years ago, Fred also ruined the IP but I think they had been payed for their own faults.

Still, I still wonder what will happens next, or maybe just nothing.

I dunno, Im just enjoying myself looking through the files here.

There is alot of potential that can be made of this. I kind of wish people were talking about that more.

Confirmed to exist, but it's "completeness" is just Fred exaggerating.

While I doubt that the 2002 build is being professionally completed for retail release, I think it is highly likely we will see more releases like this. This leak was calculated and worked on for at least a year. The reason someone would clean up a release like this is so that they can protect their source and the original developers. A developers workstation contains all kinds of personal, business, and other extraneous content that could possibly be damaging to reputations or careers or businesses. None of that stuff is here and that is a good thing. While the release of development builds will anger the powers that be, they are less likely to go nuclear if a release is clean like this.

I doubt it, at least not from this source. I'm sure the powers that be already have a list of potential suspects.

My guess would be that x0r was given more than just this. This was not a sloppy release. And even if they did have a list, this stuff has exchanged between so many hands, there's no telling who did what. I doubt it's a coincidence that Embracer owns everything now.

I kind of thing we will see some of the builds somewhere down the line. Theres kind of nothing to lose now, 90% of what we all wanted was to just "see" this build and thats already been done.

Id love to see the final build as it was before DNF moved away from 3DR, the Jace Hall footage indicates there was a better game in there(and a better structure)

I have this same exact sentiment. I haven't downloaded anything yet, not really interested in a buggy game, I'll play it when the mod community finishes it. My heart is still on the Duke3D betas. For 10 years I heard everyone say Duke is dead, who cares about DNF, etc. and now everyone is back because DNF was released. Turns out DNF is still what drives interest in the Duke franchise more than Duke3D, even after all these years. I don't understand the high expectations after all this time. 3D Realms never had the development talent or business ethics to make the game everyone expected, that's why it was never made.

There's also 2K, which insisted for the game to ship without a level editor and which systematically refused to do anything to release DNF on next-gen platforms.

Something like this is never ever going to happen, but if 2 weeks ago I had gotten an email from Randy saying he wanted to release as many DNF related things as possible and asking me for suggestions, these are the builds I would advise him to release (If and to the extent they still exist):

1. The first experimental Quake 1 Engine build.
2. The last experimental Quake 1 Engine build before receiving the Quake 2 source code.
3. The first Quake 2 Engine build.
4. The last Quake 2 Engine build.
5. The first Unreal Engine build.
6. The last build before updating to the Unreal Tournament codebase.
7. The first build on the UT codebase.
8. A build as close to the 1999 screenshots as possible.
9. A build from as close to January 2000 as possible.
10. A build as close to June 2000 as possible.
11. A build as close to January 2001 as possible.
12. A build as close to E3 2001 as possible.
13. A build as close to January 2002 as possible.
14. A build as close to June 2002 as possible.
15. The infamous October 2002 build.
16. The first build using the new renderer.
17. A build as close to January 2003 as possible.
18. A build as close to June 2003 as possible.
19. A build as close to January 2004 as possible.
20. The last build on Havok.
21. The first build on Meqon.
22. A build after 6 months or so of using Meqon (So March 2005 or so).
23. A build as close to June 2005 as possible.
24. A build as close to January 2006 as possible.
25. A build as close to June 2006 as possible.
26. A build as close to August 2006(The famous departures) as possible.
27. A build as close to January 2007 as possible.
28. A build as close to June 2007 as possible.
29. A build as close as possible to the teaser trailer from 2007.
30. A before "cutting is shipping" build.
31. A after "cutting is shipping" build.
32. A build as close to what Jace Hall saw.
33. The last 3DR pre-Triptych build, presumably from May 2009.
34. The first Triptych build.
35. The last Triptych build before GBX took over.

The idea being to capture major events from the development of the game(Such as the 2002/2003 restart, the switch to Meqon physics, the mass departures of 2006 etc etc).and to track progress every 6 months or so.

Man, I hope you're right. I would really love the see the 1998 build as well as the more developed 2002 build.

Agree with you there. DNF came out 10 years ago, while the source code leaked is over 20 years old. The franchise has been dead more or less ever since. I really don't see anyone putting in a lot of resources into trying to find the people responsible for the leak.

If there's a chance a more completed build will be released later, it might not be the best idea to waste too much energy into fixing up or trying complete what we already have now. It would be nice to have confirmation whether or not more builds are planned to be released.

I haven't been paying close attention to everything, but I haven't seen an organized effort yet by one person or a group that's seriously repairing things, pledging to stay true to what the game should probably be, and posting their progress to one centralized place like GitHub or elsewhere. There are a lot of people doing a lot of random modifications to the game from what I'm seeing. There needs to be leadership in coordination with any former 3DR employees willing to give insight on the build(s) if possible. The fact that George has been receiving overly-aggressive responses on Twitter makes it less likely he will be willing to give any further insight. I don't think it was the best idea for people to respond to him in that matter (even if they truly are critical of him) because he could have given us a lot more helpful information if they hadn't.

If there was going to be a massive stream of Duke Nukem leaks, the wisest to lead with would be E3 '01 era DNF. The amount of mainstream hype it will get will make the train nearly unstoppable. Something like a DNF 98 or DN3D betas could theoretically be contained. This is so massive it has gained the attention of people who didn't even know who Duke Nukem is.

I think it'll be difficult to co-ordinate a large group of people together to make one project. I think it'll be better if the build is bug fixed to a point where its stable and the community releases map-packs or mod packs for the game, much like Duke Nukem 3D or Half-Life. That way you'll get a larger variety of content and the content itself will more likely be finished.

The '98 Build is so interesting IMHO, because it's very close aesthetically to Duke 3D, and we can see the closest evolutional step of the game. Also at that point, the original staff was mostly there, isn't it?

I guess there were little content in terms of level design in the '98 Build, it's merely for the assets.

I think moving to Unreal was one of the few right moves they made.

Switching to Unreal had two detrimental effects, not only on DNF, but on 3DRealms as a whole.
1) It's what turned DNF from a quick project to keep gamers occupied while waiting for Prey, to George's personal playground where he could throw everything and the kitchen sink. That only stopped when money ran out.
2) It made Prey (Paul Schuytema's incarnation) look obsolete. All of a sudden, the revolution looked worse than the stopgap. This doomed the version of Prey that was being developed in 1998, which caused the aborted attempt with Corrinne Yu (more wasted money) the sale of the Prey IP to Bethesda (to try and recoup the losses caused by DNF) and its eventual destruction.

I'm not against lots of people making random maps and mods for the game and I welcome it, but at the same time, it would also be good to already be seeing an organized effort on some level being worked out to make serious fixes to the game. I am seeing serious fixes here and there, but they need to be posted to one place everyone can get familiar with and have the link to rather than having to dig through the forums or Discord messages to find them. There needs to be a Wiki set up or another page for people to go to (I'm sure someone is working on that already or will) with all known information so far, like cheat codes, console commands, modding info, etc., because I'm seeing quite a few people who still don't know any of it yet. I get why it's like this right now, though. Like Jimmy said, this is massive and has gained a lot of attention. I suppose things will improve once the hype slows down some.

Edit: I did just find a Discord server dedicated purely to DNF 2001 and it seems fairly informative, so I'll be sure to direct people there who need help in the future.

So the DNF 2001 build was released on my 35th birthday? You shouldn't have...

The fuck I'm saying, of course you should xD
