I like the initial idea for the site, but I think a little more focus content wise on the projects need to be made. Personally, I think a single screenshot isn't really enough to attract a click unless it especially catches the eye of a reader. Three screenshots on the listings would probably work a little nicer, and helps with showcasing each of the projects a little better. Not only that, but also covers more room for the titles of particular projects with longer names.
A good example would be, Wads in Progress, a similar style of site intended for Doom projects.
Hopefully there'll also be some useful tags added for projects to be more specific as to what they require and how they're intended to be played.

You could always have a rollover popup with more screens and info.

Rollover popup's would be rather pointless, it's just as easy to check the entry for information. It's much better to just have a few more shots right there ready to be looked at for each entry for readers to see. This in turn would also help to have more vertical space on the site too. Edit; And besides, depending how the rollovers work, they can also just get in the way when users are trying to get to other spots of the site.

I'm sure rollovers were planned, but seeing the Wads in Progress page, I agree with you. A one-mod-per-row setup with a little more detail and less popup reliance would be more appealing to me.
I can see where both views make sense for different purposes. You can see more at once in the small view, so it's helpful if you want to find a specific mod you know about; it doesn't help as much if you're looking for a new mod to try out.
I'll code it however they want me to, of course.

I talked with Quakis recently about this thing, we had some very good suggestions that i think should be concidered being used, I recomend reading this to anyone who really cares for this mod page idea, it's a bit long, but we covered some points that we personally found pretty vital:
- The site had to first of all, be more practical than pretty to look at... Of course, we rock, so i'm sure we can do both these things at once, but we must absolutely make sure to always think practical first, pretty later... A mockup is easy to make, but it might work completely different to the user... Quakis posted the link to Wads In Progress, which i personally find to be a very good example for how the page should look like layout wise...
- We thought that it would be the very best to make the site accessible to public, so that anyone can add anything into the database anytime, a notification will be sent to admins (or one spicific admin), after which the admin validates and makes the uploaded files public... This is to make it easier for us here to add new content (only validating, instead of having to recieve submissions and add it all ourselves, which is such a bother) It's also to prevent that foul files or any sort of abuse gets into the database that admins validate files...
- Admins should have full rights to edit the contents added to the database (not altering the files themselves, but the page and what was added) This is to fix potentional spelling errors and what not, to make sure everyone wll understand what it contains, and so on, perhaps the person who uploaded didn't provide enough information or anything at all, in which case the admin should have the full rights to add what he finds necessary, or maybe give the originaluploader a note about his lack of info provided...
- As Quakis suggested, 3 preview images is a perfect number as well, just about enough to get an impression of the mod/map/whatever, we'll have to make sure the person uploading it selects 3 particular images though, and not just random shots of a wall and ceiling, it has to be productive, and showcase anything that it contians which could give visitors an impression of what it is about... we thought may there should be like a limit of like a bunch of pics inside the description itself, but the previews images of it should be 3 pics, it's about enough to catch peoples interest and such, one images just doesn't suffice... Again Wads In Progress seeems to do this right...
I think that was all we talked about, please think these things through, i personally think these suggestions sound pretty good...
