High Def. Duketalk for Next HRP
#1 Posted 17 May 2009 - 08:33 AM
He's the same guy who helped us make this soundboard: http://www.duke4.net...omment.news.162
Before I tell him to start recording, it'd be nice to have a guarantee that his work will be included in the HRP so that I know he won't be wasting his time recording everything.
What do you guys think?

EDIT: I just realized that you weren't just talking about adding new one liners, you are proposing to replace the originals! That makes even less sense imo. They are lines of dialogue, not sound effects -- it doesn't matter much whether they are in stereo or whether the sound quality is super high. Whatever advantages you might get from the higher quality sound would be more than negated by the fact that it is not the real Duke.

Yeah. I noticed that you used some quotes from Duke Nukem: Time to Kill, in your latest version of DukePlus. Good quality as well. Add as many as you like, and I'll enjoy Duke Plus even more!

I might also add that some of the audio clips are better than others. What I'd consider as of a higher standard would be Chicks and Lookin Good, while the not so Dukish one would be something like Let's Rock (too high pitched, not as monotonous as the original). As another comparison, the laughter part in What Mess can be improved on, while the part where Clint says "What a mess" is pretty good

I sure as shit wouldn't download them... it's just not Duke Nukem when he says it... There is one man and one man only who is Duke....
John St. John....

I mean whats the harm?, the worst thing that can happen is that he says no and thats that, and then again he might think its a fun thing to do.
You never know if you dont ask

WHAT??? Are you deaf? He still doesn't sound close to John St. John... and by 'close' I'm being critical... but still...
He still doesn't have the accent either... and you can't just play with the pitch - because that does sweet bugger all to help him sound any more duke-like.
I still stand by my first statement... there is only one Duke... and his name ain't Duke... It's John.

He charges $50 for every 30 seconds of voice acting last time I checked. That's actually quite reasonable -- you can get a lot of mileage out of 30 seconds. But personally, I would pay him to do new lines, not the old ones again.

But this is after all just a fun community project of enhancing duke nukem, its not a commercial product being sold. I mean how many artists have lent their talents to the HRP over the years? for free? Jon seems like a nice guy so whats to say he wouldnt either?
Like i said, there is absolutely no harm in asking, worst thing that can happen is that he declines.

However, I agree and doubt he would do it for free.

But I would think you would want somone more senior to the community and perhaps even directly involved in the HRP as a representative than some newbie to the community like me that just waltzed on these boards a few days ago.

But the more senior people of these threads and to Duke already know what the answer is as we have already told you.

JsJ announced publicly that he charges money for precisely this kind of work, and I won't make myself look like an idiot by asking him to do it for free. Plus I don't really care if he records the sound again or not.

Frankly, i don't think its really big deal if we get the voice-overs in high def or not, i just simply though i would add a constructive suggestion to this discussion.

It's not a drawn foregone conclusion. It's fact. Jon St. John charges for any Duke lines people want him to do. It's on his website. He's not going to make exceptions because then everybody will say "can u mak an axception 4 me? its for a mod! lolz."

In fact he charges a lot more for stuff that's public then the price he lists for personal use. There is a thread somewhere on the 3DR Forums where a guy had him record a line that he posted on a website and he had to pay a higher price. He didn't say how high just that it was a lot more expensive then a line you are justing going to put on your answering machine or something like that.

"For $300, We Can Put Duke Nukem in Left 4 Dead"
Frankly the idea sounds silly and irrelevant to me.
I like Jon St. John, I do. But it's just a silly idea and it could be a scam on the part of the guy who claims he'll use all the money for that purpose.
Edit: Also, please use this thread for discussing that. Thanks!
