Will this news pissed me off. But I guess us Duke fans have to do what Duke fans do best.......Wait.

We waited 12 years for DNF, we can wait a few more years for Gearbox to crash and burn after more and more gamers stop buying their shit and then Duke will be auctioned off to someone who is guaranteed to do better.

Almost six years since Duke Forever was released...thanks for caring for the franchise Gearbox..but they have shut down multiple fan projects and re-released Duke Nukem 3D for the millionth time so at least they have done something.

How old will the 80s action hero archetype be by then? Will it ever ring true with anyone anymore? Even us fans? It's getting disheartening.

I've never thought of Duke specifically as an 80s hero archetype just a bad-ass character and franchise that was inspired partly by those sort of things. Doesn't specifically have to be 80s just a bad-ass character doing cool shit. I'd say something like Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon with Rex Power Colt is more of an 80s hero archetype.

Unless Gearbox licences a game to a developer who knows what they're doing and is familiar with the franchise there will never be another good game in the Duke Nukem franchise. They have a deep fundamental misunderstanding of the franchise and what it's supposed to be. They have this insane focus on it being this insanely outlandish action comedy parody franchise and as long as that persists Duke as we know it is effectively dead. Compare Duke under 3D Realms including the old Duke Forever trailers in tone and content to everything Gearbox has put out. 3D Realms always had this focus on a more grounded realistic world with touches of comedy and the occasional reference while Gearbox has this unrelenting focus on what were always small parts of the games.

They say "maybe" to a sequel to a game that sold poorly and has a small fan base, But "no" to another game featuring a gaming legend, has a larger fan base and who's last entry while badly received sold 2 million copies?

I hate to say it, but Duke lives on only in my late 90's/early 2000's nostalgia. In fan creations, also. I have more faith in fan creations than I do in anything Gearbox will ever put out. Whenever Steve from Open Maw Productions sends me scripts/screenshots/videos of his Duke projects to check out, I'm never disappointed. I actually get that feeling of hype that I used to get in the 3DR era of waiting for DNF, when I still believed the game was going to be amazing.

After seeing the ad campaign for this Bulletstorm stuff, though... I can see they're just carrying on the goofiness of DNF instead of taking Duke in a better direction. They're clearly saying in these ads that Duke doesn't fit in anymore. Any hardcore fan out there who hopes for a better future for Duke, should reject this and not buy it, in my opinion. By doing so, you'll just be contributing to a further downfall of the character. If someone gifts me this game and the DLC, I'll play it, but I don't think I'll be buying it. That's just me, though. I'm sure this would be fun to play and decent, but I'd much rather send them the message that they need to get their shit together or give up on Duke. The half-assery of them taking the DNF Duke model to use in this instead of coming up with a brand new design that would turn heads isn't cutting it for me.

They used Duke to add value to a full-price re-release of a 6 year old game made by a completely different company and nothing after that.

I guess Duke is dead since long time ago, now it's just exhuming the corpse every few years to take a fresh piss on it.

I don't think anyone needs to consciously avoid purchasing the Bulletstorm "remaster". Gearbox are doing a good enough job pushing people away and guaranteeing it will be a failure. This re-release reduces Duke to a pre-order DLC and kills any possibility of a new Bulletstorm game. Thanks Gearbox.

- Doesn't seem to be a remaster at all
- Full price
- No discount/free copies for existing owners
- Full price
- Terrible advertising misrepresenting the game - no trailers have shown off the skillshot system or the pulpy comedy sci-fi style
- Full price
- Duke DLC is poorly done. Model from Duke Forever, Jon sounds bored and barely like Duke.

Back in 2011 I would buy 5 or more of anything that had the words "Duke" and "Nukem" in the title and would aggressively attack and insult anyone who talked shit on the franchise.

6 years of Gearbox and now I'm in the stages of accepting his death.

I agree with the fan creations being better than anything Gearbox will put out so we may as well stick with that.

Gearbox has been nothing but cancer to the franchise and gaming in general.
Before Gearbox got the ip almost all the Duke games and the expansions were available to buy and TTK, LOTB and Zero Hour were on the way there.
Now we are stuck with a censored version of Duke3D and 1 version of Forever.

I don't think even EA would handle the franchise this poorly.

You must be kidding me. Forever was a masterpiece compared to this piece of shit under spoiler existence of which people refuse to acknowledge and this is just one example, there is more.

To me that's the definition of the 80s action hero archetype.

Any character that's a bad-ass who does cool shit ever is an 80s action hero archetype?

Hopefully soon DNF 2017 will wash the bad taste of this out of our mouths..

That's what started it more or less. I suppose Dirty Harry was in the 70s though...really exploded in the 80s though.

Reason why I always liked Independence Day (1996) is because Will Smith is a bad-ass doing cool shit in that

It's the difference between 80s action hero archetype referring to a bad-ass and stuff like Blood Dragon that uses the aesthetic of a cheap 80s sci-fi movie. The 80s stylization is what's being overused in games and movies. It's a trend. Having that synth music, CRT effects, and so on...

In other news Gearbox are trying to market Bulletstorm again..

Double post because the forums won't even let me have three YouTube links in one post...

Compared to the original trailers they're doing a terrible job..

Yeah that's real. They were talking to someone from Gearbox publishing. Randy has dropped hints on Twitter that they are working on a new Brothers in Arms game and they're clearly working on Borderlands 3...Duke is dead baby, Duke is dead.

Duke's dead?

Well that's one hard pill to swallow then, considering Duke is my childhood hero/inspiration, all time number one fav game franchise and so forth..

Man.. hope that HL1 Duke mod someday somehow gets the greenlight to continue development because it was looking totally awesome and high quality.

Well, most my favorite musicians, actors, leaders are dead. Guess I should accept Duke is too.

I can understand not wanting to do a Duke game but why not outsource it? It's not like Interceptor - sorry 'Slipgate' - would jump at the chance. Voidpoint probably would too. If we won't get a AAA Duke game from anyone why not let a smaller company create something on a smaller scale? It can't hurt.

Best thing Gearbox can do is bring the console games to PC in a state where they aren't totally locked down by DRM and encryption so fans can screw with them a bit. Would be great to see a touched up re-release of Zero Hour and Time To Kill on PC.

Duke's still alive through the fan creations.
LGR does the Duke voice almost better than JSJ at this point so he can do new lines for mods if he's willing and every fan creation, even the lessor ones are going to be more Duke Nukem than anything Gearbox will shit out.

Gearbox can keep being one of the most hated companies in gaming and it'll kill them eventually and Duke will be free.

There was this Twitter exchange from a few months ago..

https://twitter.com/...323110523162625

Randy seemed open to the idea - Fred liked all the Tweets that talked about them possibly remaking Zero Hour or doing a side-scroller...could start a community driven movement to be loud and tweet @duvalmagic asking him to do something worthwhile with Duke.

If we aren't vocal nothing will change.

In other news Gearbox is partnering with G2A of all people to put out a limited collectors edition.

Quote

You will receive: Bulletstorm Full Clip + Duke Nukem's Bulletstorm Tour, Figurine, Dog Tags, Mugshot with Steam game key, Certificate and even more... everything packed in an Epic Steel box.

Slipgate trying to get a Duke game from Gearbox?

I want to believe.

Randy is open to the idea at least...and all the Tweets have been liked by Fred and from past efforts we know he wouldn't miss the opportunity to work on a Duke game if it presented itself..

I suppose all that can be done given both parties are open to it is to make it more visible and for fans to express their interest. Might give reason for Randy to move forward with it if he thinks he might get money out of it. Console ports or a side-scrollers would be something at least..

I want to believe.

But past experience tells me that they'll make half a Duke game, Gearbox will can it and Slipgate be forced to rush to something else again.
