Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour

#601

World Tour looks interesting. Not "must have", but definitely interesting. Glad JSJ, Blum and the Levelord are coming back for it.....

.....but I can't help but admit: after reading about Randy "Whinging Pussboy" Pitchford being drunk off his ass during the reveal, talking more about freaking Battleborn and SINGING in the damn stream, I wish he would either leave Gearbox or get kicked out. He is to Gearbox what Dixie Carter was to TNA Wrestling: a cancer. Watching Jim Sterling's videos was the catalyst for my gradual loss of respect for Randy, and the news about his behavior leading up to the World Tour reveal is basically proof that the man is in dire need of a rude awakening. Let Blum and Levelord run Gearbox, and just do to Randy what Paramount did to Gene Roddenbery: kick him upstairs, give him little jobs to make him think he's important, but slowly relieve him of any real operating power he has.

Any info on multiplayer.

I'll buy this only if it has workshop maps and online dukematch.

I think that's a reference only me and you understand :D
That's not to mention Hogan, Bischoff, and Russo were to TNA. I assume Russo would be Anthony Burch in this case?

He's basically implying that retailers might not be interested in stocking a relatively old game on their shelves - as it might not get the sales they're looking for - and that you should campaign for interest in creating a physical edition. However, why should Gamestop be concerned about physical copies? Shouldn't the developer/publisher be looking over that?

Even a semi-indie game like Shadow Warrior got a physical release and it was relatively unknown compared to the big FPS hits like Call of Duty, Far Cry, Battlefield etc.

So he answered: "Retail carries retail products - GameStop, Bestbuy, etc are the customer. They need to know you want it." I do not think my wish can push such companies to make even a one box of the game.

Levelord just confirmed on FB that Mapster32 was used to make the new levels, so does that mean Gearbox has to pay royalties?

I think they should if they Use Mapster32 from EDuke32

Can't wait for Duke to make a very phoned in Gamergate reference to go with his Bazinga quote.

This is perhaps the most baffling thing I've read on this forum. :D Jon is lovable, he's a legend, he's funny, I never thought I'd read such a thing on these pages.

I don't like the focus shift towards character/actor and not the other parts of the game. It led directly to Jon having more freedom recording lines, which haven't exactly worked in character's favour. It's not about him, but about the game. I really dislike him acting Duke all of a sudden.

Yeah I'm an annoying nitpicker. It's a principle thing. The add-ons have been part of the game since 1997 IIRC and I think you underestimate the importance they have to players. They're official content, and Megaton had 7 official episodes, while Gearbox is asking 20€ for 5 episodes.

Having all episodes and add-ons in one place is surely better for game's historic preservation. It's better for everyone, even for Gearbox, since in the long-run it prolongs IP's cultural significance.

After going what like 10 years without JSJ appearing and talking openly about Duke back in the day, it's like freakin' Christmas seeing him on stage talking about Duke to me. But like anything, everybody digs different stuff. I also dig his voicework, but we've talked about that a bit lately.

Just for comparison, and to show I don't like everything, I think the new Shadow Warrior voice is unfunny and uncool. Hell, I say let JSJ do that game too, he was Big the Cat in Sonic Adventure, the guy has range baby.

IGN has some new gameplay footage in their enthusiastic preview. There's an embargo on sharing impressions of the Amsterdam level. We'll hear more later in September.

The developer commentary part is probably what I'm most interested in. I love behind the scenes stuff like that (Half-Life 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2 comes to mind).

Oh boy, it has the same FOV as Megaton. The sound quality for effects seems to be lower too? Good to see that they fixed the Polymost problem of the skyboxes though.

Does Megaton have a different FOV from eduke32 in say Polymost mode, at 1080p resolution? Only FOV change I noticed offhand was how Polymer has a higher FOV than Polymost in eduke. I prefer the feel of eduke overall, just didn't know about the FOV differences. Would be cool if it let you adjust stuff like that though, and of course turning off mouse filtering/acceleration.

They rerecorded all of the Duke sounds and the performance is pretty much completely different (and doesn't really fit in some cases). The sound effects are a lower bitrate. The audio mix is completely fucked.

Weapon icons at 3:34 (they just resized original sprites lol, why not to take pick up sprites at least?) and the new "light effect" looks bad. Only hope for good level design and music.

New font and new JSJ lines are not comfortable too, although I do not want to sound so meticulously.

Do we know sound effects are lower bitrate for sure, or is this impressions from the videos so far? Not to say you're not onto something, but that would be odd.

Not to be rude but can you not hear it? The audio sounds abysmal for some reason, like it is being played through a cardboard tube

Ah, you mean in the Hollywood Holocaust gameplay vid? I just loaded that up, the link brought me to those two guys talking with little gameplay snippets where I didn't notice audio issues. I definitely notice it in this Hollywood full gameplay vid. Not sure if bitrate is the issue though, it sounds muffled and lower pitch or something. If it's like that in the finished game that will definitely be an issue. The enemy and weapon sounds and switches etc, while Duke and the music sound fine.

Also maybe this is kooky, but the effects sound better near the end of the Hollywood gameplay video. Duke fighting the pigcop with his shotgun for example, that all sounds crisp and good, for what it's worth.

And any more info on my FOV question, just curious? Do you know what the FOV is for Polymost in eduke, and what the FOV is for Megaton for example?

Duke is re-recorded. The old audio is probably converted to a different format and the conversion was done poorly.

Edit: The way it works is depending on the format (like OGG or MP3 or whatever) the quality/rate setting can kill certain frequencies almost completely (basically acting like a bad filter). So some sounds may come out almost identical depending on the original data, but on balance you get muffled or muddy output when the incorrect rate is chosen.

Do you think Duke's shotgun sound or the Pigcop sound bad? They sound spot on to me. Seems the pistol firing sound got the worst of it for some reason, hopefully they fix it.

And I'll admit, JSJ new "aahhhh" when getting health could have used another take or two. :D They've still got a month folks! And that new Deus Ex game I've been playing is still in development, it may be ready for release soon.

Okay listening to this 15 minute Death Row video, I'm uh I'm finding some things to complain about. Duke's "AAAHHHHHH!!" scream is downright hilarious. But, to be balanced here, "Hail to the king baby" to me sounds quite good.

Here's hoping that by release Duke isn't saying "Damn, I'm good." every single time he hits with the RPG.

This is what I'm referring to, I don't have specific values though.

Thanks, appreciated. Which one is which? I see whichever one is on the bottom has the higher FOV.

edit: just fired up eduke, I see Polymost in eduke is the bottom pic there. So this new one and Megaton have a lower FOV, I didn't notice that. But indeed eduke's feels the best to me.

Err, the Death Row video features the REWIND feature, this can't have been made from the "1996 source" unless they remade that too? http://au.ign.com/vi...y-pax-west-2016

That is interesting indeed, I'm assuming/hoping the ol' autosave key is still there. Not that I need it, ahem, being kind of a pro myself. :D

On the audio and Duke lines thing, to me it sounds like a mixed bag. Some sounds great, some not so great. Maybe some effects they thought were sibilant so wanted to muffle or smooth out, and thus we get what we got. And other's like the shotgun they thought sounded fine and didn't mess with as much. On Duke lines, I don't think it'd be possible to please us with the hours we've put into playing Duke 3D. But even still, some of these could've been done better I agree.

They sound disgusting, his voice is so horse and it sounds like phlegm is about to project out :X
The new one liners sound weird against the other original sound effects, they are almost too crisp.
Jon's delivery is also off; lines that used to be extremely brief now seem to be dragged out. It can't be Jon's fault as he sounds natural in Bombshell and Interceptor's other new game, so it must've been the audio direction in this port.
I don't think overall this looks bad though. Obviously they've had less time to work on a source port and less familiarity overall with the engine, but it doesn't seem lackluster

Can I be honest?

I am a huge duke nukem fan, but this one... The only thing that interests me are the new episode and the voice over, which is something I have asked long time ago here, aaaand the new chapter... Why am I going to spend 20 dollars on something that does not add anything but that and modified tiles? Also, will it have the other expansions? Will it have multiplayer? WILL IT EVER HAVE SOME COMMUNITY MAP SHARE? AAAAAAAAAAAAAA *falls*

I give it a month until people rip those things off and put it on eduke 32... Really.

It doesn't have the expansions (that we know of), it has multiplayer and has Steam Workshop (I assume consoles will get shafted on that)

As for 'ripping the episode', I guess that's a thing people will do but that would be piracy as well.
