Here's the official announcement quoted:
https://gematsu.com/...nnounced-for-pc
Addtional info:

- It will be published by Atari
- Uses Kaiser's KEX so it's Blood EX basically
- It will support both DirectX and Vulkan
- The audio is getting some kind of an update, based on what they are saying it's going to be pretty minor though
- Multiplayer will be done through Steam and GOG Galaxy, the netcode is getting an update.

Sadly no word on map support, modding etc.

But what about the source code, NightDive?

For Crying Out Loud!

Atari owns the publishing rights for the first game and WB Games owns the IP: Nightdive has no say in the matter when it comes to releasing the source.

My point was if they're going to all this trouble to remaster Blood, why not at least try negotiating with WB and purchase the source code outright?

Pretty sure it's not the same price.
Very good start for the future of BLOOD, gonna buy a lot of copies for my friends who don't know the game but could play it :)

Okay, this is all I wanted:
Posted Image
+ it seems like KEX's scripting and whatnot will work with the remaster too so essentially modding for Blood will get a lot better.

Because there are no benefits to doing so for Nightdive. Kaiser had the capability to reverse-engineer the entire game by himself as a side-project (since 2015 mind you) while working on Turok and Forsaken, hence there is no reason to acquire* the source code from Warner Brothers for a potentially exorbitant price.

I don't think that's how that works.

So the people petitioning for the source code since the late 90's will ultimately be for nought.

Kaiser posted a bit more about the game on Twitter, most importantly he's talking about what's going to change:
https://twitter.com/...138745284521990

Quote

Some things like the slipperiness is going to remain as it was intentionally designed to do that, but none of BUILD engine's collision detection is going to be used. Though the new collision code will produce nearly exact same results; just less glitchy results...

Take that as you may. Personally I'm fine with changes like this as long as the intention is to fix the original engine's faults and not about altering game mechanics.

Also: it's based on reverse engineering, not on the source.

Has he successfully reverse engineered the entire code base? What percentage?

I assume now NightDive has the rights to make this remaster, he won't even need to do that.

I think most of the work on BloodEX was done before Night dive got the rights. As a hobby project. You can see videos of it from a year or two ago.

Are they going to update the art to higher resolution?

I see some comments here and here in the internet where people complain about the fact it's not a new game or real remake, people don't realize, a license is less expensive and they make remastered (like for Turok) because they need maybe a bigger team or it could be the owner of the publishing/sales rights or the owner of developpments rights who want "that" and not "that". It's not so easy.

If Night Dive Studios has so much money, i'm pretty sure they could hire a lot of people and buy the full ip to make new stuff.

The port is an opportunity to show how Blood is good :), maybe something can happen later (maybe not) but it's a good try and maybe more stuff can happen, i'm pretty sure There will be some good sales at the release (hoping nothing bad will happen before).
For the sourcecode, it depends of Atari, pretty sure NDS could have asked for it but if Atari don't want release it, it won't be released, you can't deal with it...or maybe after some "sales", who knows...

So apparently according to Kaiser, BloodEX will support already released mods As mentioned in this twitter response.

Mods? More like custom addons with new art and sounds. I am pretty sure my and NoOne's mod (Weapons Mod) won't be working due hacking the exe file. It might load at best qav files.

Well, you will have to port your mod to BloodEX. It uses Angelscript for scripting from what I read.

Why do you say that?

People are never happy even when miracles happen, sad times, killjoy seem more fun nowadays :)
it's an opportunity to show how BLOOD is liked in the retro fps community, better than nothing, it could stay dead forever.
I hope more can happen later now, we can dream, it's not a bad thing, if Atari (and Warner) can notice very good sales, maybe the best can happen, gonna buy some copies for my friends.
Maybe nothing will happen but it's still a good start, a door opened for now, we will see.
Like we say, there is this "glass of water" where you have people who see 50% of water IN and people who will see 50% of this glass dont have water, expression. Im more a guy who prefer to see the 50% of the glass who still has water. (If you understand).

You are the same kind of person who thought Gearbox buying Duke Nukem Forever was a good thing.

Blood works flawlessly in DOSBox. Blood is not dead.

This will prolong the release of the source code, perhaps forever.

I don't like Gearbox and Duke Nukem Forever so yeah ;(

You can be purist and still want your "game" to evolve. At least, it's not a port for BLOOD 2.

Nop, there is a few flaws in dosbox (demo synchro work better on bloodgdx than dosbox by exemple) and is hard to configure for new players, it doesnt help the community at all, it's dead, the community is near dead but if you stay in Duke Nukem forum, you can't notice it.

Dosbox is an old things who not liked on steam games like Heretic or DOOM, you can check the comments, people ask often for a real port in the game on steam. I play always the expansions with dosbox first (purist stuff) but i want a port to enjoy with more options and stuff.
With an "official" port, BLOOD will be more noticed and will bring more new players and new fans.

Pretty sure the sales are gonna be good, wait and see for what can happen later maybe :)

I have to say I am quite happy to see BloodGDX working as flawlessly as it already does. Widescreen support is there, higher resolutions are possible, mods also work without problems... for me that's all I need. Adding some visual bling-bling the original game didn't have maybe looks nice, but I am not a big fan of that.

Yeah BloodGDX is still an option if you don't want pay for an official stuff, m210 helped the community and i thanks him for that, people played more MP for a moment ^^
But an official project could help even more i think, we will see :)

I don't think you can prolong "never" anyway.

You'd need someone with fuck you money to get involved. Nobody like that gives a crap about Blood.

#658

I just learnt you need the approbation and a deal with ALL the companies (Atari AND Warner Bros Games) who own some rights to the game even JUST for a port of the game....so what happened is more like a miracle yet yeah...scaring but interesting....maybe if the sales go well, what could happen if Warner Bros Games and Atari notice how Blood is liked :)

Performance-wise it runs like dogshit though + you have to deal with the original game's terrible mouse aim. Not fun with a stuttery framerate. "Flawless" is sure as shit not the word I'd use for it.

I've always had my doubts that this was ever going to happen anyway.
