All this talk of Ravensoft games and no love for Voyager: Elite Force?
For shame!

Elite Force was awesome. Still play it every now and then. That and Jedi Outcast/Academy.

Technically, Elite Force is a freaking inspiration. It's impressed me more than Q3 originally did and managed to unbreak some of q3's broken renderer features at that (detail textures and flares). The feedback on some of the weapons is great too (ARC WELDER ARC WELDER ARC WELDER)

Turns out you guys were right. I'm halfway through Quake 4 and it's a solid game. Environments are a bit bland sometimes and a bit too linear but the gunplay is quite good. Entertaining.

Nowhere near as good as Quake 1 and Quake 2 though. And it could have used a killer soundtrack just like Quake 2's Sonic Mayhem tracks.

I thought Q4 was a big disappointment. The vehicle controls felt especially wonky, which was a surprise. Nothing resembles Q2. It's almost as if it's a reimagining of the whole premise. I wish it had the same dark red sky instead of the boring cloudy grey.

In a sense, it is somewhat of a retcon of the Stroggoverse. The Strogg in Q4 are hiveminds whereas the Strogg in Q2 are individual beings. There's also a few other inconsistencies with Q2, but it's mostly brushed aside by "we thought x, then it turns out y" or "y is actually part of x".

I've played Quake IV and I liked it. It's like a military version of Doom 3 (I've also think that Doom and Quake universes is very similar to each other). However, the game looks way too monotonus most of the time, and I beelive I've never completed it. I stumbled during the boss fight, where you must control the tank and destroy a big robot machine or smth.

I loved Doom 3 back when I played it in 2004. I beat it on one, long ass, sitting. It was incredible.

Quake IV was pretty solid too. Strangely enough my brother was the one who busted ass on that one. I lost interest after the mech battle. Still, there was nothing nessacarily wrong with it, I just missed the way things were in Quake 2 and would have preferred something closer to Quake 2's feel. Including and especially the music.

However, the beast game made with Doom 3 tech would have to be Prey. Hands down. They did such a wonderful job getting the most out of the engine.

The "push it to the limit award" for id Tech 4 goes to Raven Software because of Wolfenstein 2009... but we don't talk about that game because it was the mutant child of console and PC FPS. :D

We don't talk about it because it doesn't have kickass portals and gravitywalks and all that other stuff.

Some revisionist history from Tim Willits, who recently claimed he came up with the idea of building FPS maps explicitly for deathmatch.

Quote

Willits: "I came into the office one day and talked to John Romero and John Carmack," Willits said. "I said 'I've got this idea. I can take these map fragments and I can turn them into multiplayer-only maps, maps you only play in multiplayer.' "They both said that was the stupidest idea they'd ever heard. Why would you make a map you only play multiplayer when you can play multiplayer in single-player maps? So I said 'No, no, no, let me see what I can do.' And that's how multiplayer maps were started. True story."

Not the first time he's claimed this either.

Romero, Hall, and Carmack respond.

Quote

Tim cannot claim this idea as his in any way.

Did Romero finally come to terms with Quake not being the Darksiders he envisioned it to be?

I play it, it's pretty cool, well worth checking out. Could still use some work, but I think they did good. Haven't bought it I'm still playing the free version since I played the beta, but will most likely buy it. Not quite as fast as Quake 3, but I like the feel of it and it's just some good solid Quake (plus stats and abilities that don't overpower to me). Deathmatch is especially good.

I'm playing through Q4 for the very first time, I'm somewhere in the last quarter of the game, it's pretty fun. I like the expansion on the whole "industrial machinery" porn that was so prevalent in Doom 3, it really feels sometimes like you're crawling through a factory machinery or something. Lots of guns, plenty of ammo, a little short on the secrets and too often it feels like the game holds you by hand (situations like "Kane, find a way to enable this plot device!" *clicks the switch literally in the same room* "Good job soldier!"), but I like it overall. Way too simple and schematic compared to Prey, but everything feels a little bland compared to it.

Next on my schedule is Wolfenstein '09 and then Singularity.

Singularity is awesome, you may also want to try the first ubersoldier game if you are a fan of wolfenstein

Haha, I'm kinda doing the same thing. Recently finished Quake 4 for the first time. And now I'm playing through (old) Prey. Really loved the opening from Prey with the song from Blue Oyster Cult.

Of the id Tech 4 games I would rate Doom 3 the highest though.

A new Quake episode, Ter Shibboleth, was released by Ken. Like the latest level for Arcane Dimensions, it requires a customised version of Quakespasm to run (it's included in the download).

Quote

Presenting a new Quake custom episode, Ter Shibboleth. You will traverse through new environments including a tropical hotel resort, a far east structure nestled on the edge of a cliff, and a western mining town. Each map is designed to be as non-linear as possible, so don't be afraid to explore and take different routes as you progress. While each map can be played with a shotgun start, the episode was designed to be played from start to finish. Saving periodically is encouraged, you will face hard encounters.

I played this one a little, and the second on too... a little too awkward when it comes to shooting things (especially in the second one, where you're using one-shot rifle most of the time... frustrating!). It could be such a decent game, if only devs did notice that stabbing stuff with knife is almost always a better option than using guns.

Really loved the opening from Prey with the song from Blue Oyster Cult.

I like to tune in the Judas Priest's song. You have another thing coming, indeed... :P

What do you guys think about the idea of Duke Nukem character being in Quake Champions?

Imo this is exactly the kinda thing that Randy is looking for, a way to have Duke be seen and heard without it being a project where Duke is the main focus, or one that would require massive funding because of Duke.

Think about it.. Here is this game that represents what Duke is known for (fastpaced action) where the other classic fps heroes are already in. Wolfenstein's BJ, Doom's Doomguy and Quake's Quake Ranger. Duke would feel like at home, because he could move fast and carry all the guns and even be able to do that something that he got used to in DNF, rocketjumping.

Indeed. I like this idea ! All those 90s action stars in one game. He'd fit right in.

I'd have to disagree. Seeing a DNF Duke with a bored Jon St. John shoehorned into a quake shooter won't make it or Duke any better. What good is Duke without his pipebombs mines, jetpacks, shrinkers and holos anyway

@leilei I guess you're sick of this question, but will there be another version of engoo?

No. Ever-changing mappers' standards proposals are tiring to maintain ports for, and that's the most reasonable answer I can give - and then there's the qommunity. General reception tended to be "pointless. Play Epsilon Quake Hd Today !" and the q scene got worse from there... it was bad enough I had little to no beta feedback when I was working on it years ago.

It was still a learning experience though, but not something I'd want to try and satisfy a broken fanbase with anymore. Doom's in a far less dysfunctional state than Quake, and Engoo's even more known in the doom circles (and understand its point better)

I understand your frustration, yet I'm saddened because this is actually my favourite Quake source port, even if it doesn't handle modern maps. I like it's lack of visual polish and gritty software-modeness infinitely more than those godawful HD mods (especially Epsilon, with it's ton of weird ass additions). Too bad I can't enjoy it on my Win7x64 setup.

Re: Duke in Quake Champions.

Honestly it would be a better idea than Bulletstorm, it might even be a fair bit better integration, at least it's his kind of fast-paced death match. If they could drop in a few unique weapon skins too, then it would be fitting.

I agree. Putting Duke into a Quake game would make A LOT more sense than putting him into Bulletstorm or ... apparently in a MMORPG called Wildbuster...

Along with Blazkowicz, the Doomguy and the Quake Ranger, Duke is one of the most iconic badasses from the 90s.
