So we have a Doom thread but no wolfenstein thread?
Fine, I will create one. :dukeaffirmative:

To start, I just released the first version of an addon for the ECWolf port (with hopefully many slow updates ahead). The first version aims to update the visuals of the game with something that has more than 5 pixels as HUD sprites. check out this thread for details: http://forum.zdoom.o...php?f=4&t=51005

The Jaguar version I think has the best HUD weapon graphics, since they are primarily modified DOOM artwork. For the rest, the Mac/3DO ports have the best visuals for sprites, textures, and other miscellaneous artwork (like the UI and the HUD itself), as well as being the most authentic German because as far as I know, that was the only set of ports (along with the IIGS port that was also based on the Mac port) that had an actual German speaker speaking the lines. I love what you're doing though. I've long wanted to have the ZDOOM Wolfenstein 3D TC showing off the best that all the Wolfenstein 3D ports had to offer all in a single place.

From what you've done so far, I think using gray for the rocket launcher and chaingun looks better than the cyan, and the DOOM-based chaingun that the Jaguar port used I feel looks better than modified FreeDoom chaingun artwork.

I was never a fan of the structure of the Doom Corner thread TBH. IMO Doom 4-related news should be kept separate from everything else Doom-related.

I'm not 100% happy with the chaingun yet but for now it'll do.
I decided to keep the metallic cyan from the classic heavy weapons to keep it faithful to the original artwork (and thus, the name of the addon). I chose the cyan rocket launcher because all bosses that use a RL in WOLF3D have a cyan one.
About the Jaguar, everything but the SMG is fine, but the SMG is so ugly I don't know how someone looked at that and thought it would be a fine artwork to keep when it looks more like a grenade launcher or something.

Isn't there a separate thread for Doom 4 somewhere? If not, it can always be created.
There's also a separated thread for The New Order so no problem there.

Disclaimer: HD in this case stands for "Higher Definition", not "High Definition", because they are still 128x128 sprites =P

Good point! I never noticed you used the term HD actually, so I wasn't being critical of the term.

Either way, I was just answering that before anyone pointed it out, hehe.

I think I saw your Mussolini texture on the zdoom forum somewhere. Are you planning on making a Intalian campaing? (that's a nice idea, mixing things up a little)
Also, do you think it would be hard to port your episode to ECWolf? (Don't mind me, I'm encoraging everyone to use this excellent port).

EDIT: Neat, just found out there's a easy way of running non-ecwolf mods with ecwolf (I used wolfdoom as a test and it worked) as long as it doesn't change the source code...
All it takes is putting the mod files on a different folder and using the "-file" parameter for all relevant files on the mod folder.

Well, I used Wolf4SDL for it because that's all that I remember being available in 2012. Wolf4SDL works great.

ECWolf is great too, but I am not too familiar with it. My addon will not be able to just be placed in like you said, as it does have code changes (very minimal stuff), such as the aardwolf sign being replaced with the SOD ammo box, no episode selection, only 10 levels, and if you press T-A-B, a different message is shown.

Everyone interested in Wolfenstein 3D probably already know of these classic games, but on the rare occasion where that's not true, I higly recommend the Spear Ressurrection series.

Both can be found here: http://www.areyep.co...arres-Main.html
The blue link (Original Maps) is the original game on SDL (native on windows, no dosbox needed)
The orange link (or yellow, or color #CC9900, IDK) is the same game but with new maps, like a new episode but same storyline (similar to what Ultimate Challenge is to Return to Danger, but Spear Ressurrection actually has level desing instead of a bunch of thrown togheter mazes)

The there's the sequel, End of Destiny (even better with floor and ceiling textures, traps, new enemies, etc). EDIT: fuck End of destiny and it's cheap tricks.
The site is the same as above but a SDL version can only be obtained on WOLF3D Dome AFAIK, so here's the link: http://www.veracotti...OD4SDL_BETA.zip

Yeah, I expected it. Vanilla wolf3d is too limited so most mods change something (or a lot) on the source.

I remember glimpsing some info on what is either a mod that uses Mac graphics or a port that can directly play Mac game data a while ago, but forgot where and what exactly it was. Does this project exist, or am I remembering it wrong?

Apparently, support for Mac data is planned for ECWolf, but not implemented yet.

[Edit] I was probably talking about this.

There's a mod for ECWolf that reproduces the second encounter episode exclusive to the "Mac family" games (which is compatible with my "HD" mod). I don't know if it's still being updated but I think it contain all levels, and It comes with mac graphics, except for the regular, non-boss soldiers. You can find it here: http://forum.zdoom.o...f22f94&start=15

Alternatively, there's a (100%?) recreation of the mac version made in wolf4sdl somewhere, but it doesn't support widescreen resolution (I have no idea why since wolf4sdl does) and, of course, doesn't have the cool things ECWolf provides.

There is a modified version of the PC game called Mac-enstein 3D which recreates the Mac version near perfectly. There's an SDL version of it now so you can play it at high resolutions with the original Wolfenstein 3D maps (Third Encounter) in addition to the First and Second Encounters with the new music and everything.

http://www.wolfenste...uk/adds_MNO.htm Can pick it up here.

Also, there is an excellent HD addon if you're using ECWolf that basically brings it up to the graphical level of the Jaguar port, including textures that were given fan HD treatment that the non-PC ports left out (including the bosses like Giftmacher, Gretel Grosse, Fettgesicht, and Barnicle Wilhelm.)

This you can pick up here: http://forum.drdteam...hp?f=174&t=6607 along with a few music replacement options.

Well, I'd be quite content with the option to just play the Mac shareware on the PC :whistling: Hopefully this gets implemented in ECWolf eventually.

The Wolfenstein modding community appears pretty large, but I got the impression that it is generally quite opaque. For example, the Wolfenstein 3D Dome offers lots of mods, TCs and addons for download, but there are no screenshots (and descriptions are often very sketchy), so there's no way to tell what's what unless you check all this stuff out on your own. Of course there are review sites/blogs similar to what exists for Doom WADs, but they also may require quite some digging too. Anyway, there are some pretty cool mods/TCs out there, like Trech Warfare which seems to push the engine's limits well beyond the original game.

A while ago I was reading the Wolfenstein 3-D version history from Litude's Apogee Information Vault, and this little note caught my attention:

Quote

Version 1.1 (1992-06-01)
<...>
Graphical changes:
  • The knife graphic has changed so as to show you with covered instead of bare hands
  • The pistol graphic has changed so as to show you with covered instead of bare hands
Was BJ originally running around naked I wondered, as I had never before played v1.0. I thought I'd check it out, but didn't until recently (for completely different reasons, in fact), and it was immediately obvious that BJ's hands are not bare:
Posted Image Posted Image
(screenshots resized to correct aspect ratio using the method described here)

Apparently, he's wearing the same uniform as the guards (presumably got it off the guard he had overpowered prior to the start of the game). I'm guessing that this might have been a leftover from the development phase that still included stealth elements. This was most probably changed because the uniform serves no purpose in the final game as the guards see through this "disguise", and also to make the in-game appearance consistent with BJ's portrayal on the title screen, the story screens and the victory screen.

Anyone knows how to rip RtCW's models? The file format used is weird, and importing it using the built-in MilkShape 3D importer produces some rather strange results.

Already tried with Q3 Model Tool? It is designed to read and export various formats like MDX, MD3, MDM, MDS even quake MAP and MS3D Milkshape.

Freedom needs no clothes (red-blue eagle passes in front, explosions and AMERICA show on screen).
He was probably just using sleeveless clothes, or better yet, not using a shirt like in this picture:

Yeah, I also remembered that cover and this one too but the screenshots unambiguously show that he's wearing a guard's uniform in v1.0.

Do you not see the cuffs and lack of skin highlights? There is nothing in those weapon sprites that suggests BJ is in the buff.

bare skin don't have cuffs jfc

Carmack was right, these games don't need stories for explaining everything. Ironically he said that makes them MORE like porn, though. I guess it's like porn however you look at it.

Well I love these games. Wolfenstein I do like the new ones but man I don't know, I still even like Return to Castle Wolfenstein more then the new ones. But they did do good, let's just say I hate those generic all black soldiers. They were also in Turok 2008 I can't stand those enemies there so plain. But still its kind of generic if you hear me.. I know it switches up but I cant stand the feel of the black ops cod soldiers. I don't care if they look like nazis no they don't... they look like cod soldiers. I think the Old Blood is better then NWO. I think Wolf 3D is a bit old but I respect it for what it brought to the table there probably wouldn't be some games out there without it and it was really good that it did. Its still fun playing it though for some reason lol and putting those old levels into the New wolf games was a brilliant idea. But I got to say I feel a bit constricted in Wolf 3D because of Duke 3D.

<snip>

I have to comment on this every time I see it... Wolfenstein was excellent use of tech of the time. (VGA with decent frame rates on 486 class machines, sound card support etc)
To this day, as far as First Person Shooters, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a near perfect balance of tech, linearity/exploration, action, and even story. Where you were and why you were there made sense. Love that game... still play it on PS2 today.

I really liked Return when it came out, but I've tried to replay it recently and thought it was incredibly bland...

According to Wikipedia, there was supposed to be more missions where you fight with the undeads (no citations though, anyone got source on that), but they were brought back in the PS2 version as the Egypt episode. I'm glad things turned out the way it is, because the undead enemies were a huge waste of ammo with their weird hitboxes and being immune to damage when playing animations, like all the other enemies. Also, the Nazi babes were a serious pain in the ass to deal with the first time they appear. This game suffered from the "instant hitscan damage on sight" enemies, which isn't too surprising because the devs made Kingpin, Redneck Rampage, and Quake 2: Ground Zero (which featured the hardest final boss in the Quake series).

Also, can anyone beat the second boss without taking much damage? I know the "correct" way to beat it, but I still had to resort to exploiting its AI which made it stay in one place while I snipe it behind thin railings.

FG-42 is love, FG-42 is life.
