Beetlejuice 2

-Tim Burton will direct
-Seth Grahame-Smith (Dark Shadows,...) is writing the script
-Mickael Keaton and Winona Ryder are reprising their respective roles of Betelgeuse and Lydia Deetz
-The story is set in present days, 27 years later actually, by the way it's not a direct sequel (to quote Seth Grahame-Smith : "In the afterlife time means nothing, but in the real world it's another story")
-The movie should start shooting before the end of the year, within 3 month actually (Tim Burton just have to finish filming "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children")
Everything seems to be going in the good way to that point, so I think we have good reasons to be enthusiastic !
Besides, the movie will even attract (very) young audiances... according to an anecdote from Winona Ryder, in present days, little children (who have seen the original movie) are still comming up to her and asking her if she is the girl they have seen in the movie (these children have never seen the 80s or 90s) !

-Tim Burton have accepted because the script from Seth Grahame-Smith is good
-Mickael Keaton have accepted because Tim Burton have accepted
-Winona Ryder have accepted because both Tim Burton and Mickael Keaton have accepted (she love them both)... understandably because she have stopped running after fame (and money) for the last 15 years (since her incident and legal issues of december 2001 actually), and because Lydia Deetz is her favorite character she have ever played (with Veronica Sawyer in the movie HEATHERS she have played in the year after BEETLEJUICE)

Yep, I heard Kevin Smith talk about that on a podcast once, apparently they were kicking that script around a lot in the 90s. Would've been awesome I'd imagine.

The first draft was made in 1990, but the script from Jonathan Gems was kinda bad :
-bad remake of the first movie (without the Maitlands) for the first half of the movie
-bad sequel for the second half in a context that remind us the alien invasion in MARS ATTACKS ! (Tim Burton - 1996), the kind of context very well know by Duke Nukem / Lo Wang / Bombshell ...
3 writers have been approached to rewrite it from 1991 to 1996 (Daniel Waters, Pamela Anderson and Kevin Smith) but all of them flattly refused, considering everything have been said in the first movie.. by the way Tim Burton have progressively lost all interest in doing this sequel !
Finally, the last nail on the coffin came in march 1997 when Winona Ryder was considered too old to reprise her role of Lydia Deetz (back then she was 25 and on the set on ALIEN RESURRECTION) !
We would like to say : "Fortunately it didn't happen... in these circumstances" , the script is in a desk covered by a great amount of dust an will never see the light of the day !

...Chloë Grace Moretz is rumored to play Lydia's daughter, and that sound really plausible if you consider that she ressemble a lot to Winona Ryder when she played in the movie back then, and if you consider that Tim Burton was really satisfied by her performance in DARK SHADOWS back in 2012 !

Perhaps she could get a role in the sequel...

As Tim Burton says : The movie will happen but it's "quality first", everything have to be right !
As Beetlejuice is not a DC Comics character, it doesn't cry for a sequel in order to make it a trilogy !
I think we have good reasons to be optimistic !

“I would love to do it, but it’s a special thing. I love Michael [Keaton] and I love Winona [Ryder] and I love the characters. But I already pissed off enough people. I just want to do it right, if it’s right.”
“I’ve done films where I’ve planned it and it didn’t happen and it’s quite traumatic, I just want to treat things as fluid as possible. So it’s something that I would like to do but I want to try to do it in a way that really doesn’t piss everyone off, destroy the first, or whatever.”

Good reviews for sure and will keep us occupied until Beetlejuice 2 is released... if it doesn't give them ideas or courage in proceeding, I don't know what they need
