The Descent games are still on my library, I guess it's only affected the sale.

You always keep games in your library even though they've been removed from the store.

What do you mean the music is right?

In the GOG version there's some weird volume issue. It could be linked to DOSBox but I don't see why it would.

There were differences in music between Descent II releases. I don't remember if The Definitive Collection added or removed stuff, I know it's different.

Some of the releases and expansions have different extended versions of different selections of tracks. I'm not aware of any volume issues, though. Unless they ripped it wrong. Are they OGGs? Or straight disc images? (I own them but I haven't installed or played them)

The game is currently a very early alpha release, judging by the reviews on Steam. Considering its price and the fact it's selling a "hope" of a game, I have no interest in trying it for the time being.

Hey, Folks. Here's the story.

Parallax Software still exists and still owns the copyrights to the Descent games. Under our 21-year-old agreement, Interplay has the exclusive rights to sell Descent and Descent II, and they have been doing so on Good Old Games and Steam.

The problem is that Interplay has not paid to Parallax any royalties since 2007. We've talked to them about this numerous times over the years, and finally took action this fall. We served Interplay official notice that they were in breach of the contract, and when they still failed to pay we terminated the agreement.

This means that Interplay has lost the right to sell the Descent games, which is why they came down from GOG. (We're not sure why they're still on Steam; they shouldn't be.)

Interplay does, however, still own the Descent trademark, which they are free to use or license as they see fit (such as for Descent: Underground) as long as they don't violate our copyrights.

As for whether Descent and Descent II will be available for purchase again, we hope so. We'd be very happy to work things out with Interplay.

Matt Toschlog & Mike Kulas
Parallax Software

Descent, Descent 2 and Descent 3 store pages to watch for getting taken down.

Holy shit Interplay is a bunch of lepers.

Seems like Interplay is now holding tight onto the Descent IP and using it to milk some money with a "game promise" (Descent Underground) while not paying Parallax their due. Shitty business from Interplay.

It it very understandable that the games were taken down under those circumstances. I am not really sure why they would want or need to work with Interplay though.

If they got the rights to sell/distribute the games back due to Interplay being in material breach of the contract, couldn't they just deal directly with GOG and Valve, cutting out the middle man?

Edit:

It also seems clear from this that barring the "Descent" name/trademark the Parallax guys are the owners of the Descent IP and could for example license those IP rights to the Descent: Underground guys.

This is the bit that is puzzling me:

"and when they still failed to pay we terminated the agreement."

If the agreement that gave Interplay certain rights to the Descent IP is terminated, then surely they have no such rights left now?

Interplay owes them a shitton (personal estimation) of money, so of course they would like to "work with them" (to get what they deserve).

That much is obvious. But it sounds like they want to "work with them" to put the games back up for sale.

That's either genuine or PR talk for us customers to satiate us in their favour so we don't get mad at them. "It's not us, it's Interplay!"

It sounds to me like Parallax owns the rights to Descent I and Descent II. Just those games. They don't own the Descent IP as a whole. Interplay does.

This does suck for Interplay. Didn't they go bankrupt once already? Too bad they can't get a break, but something shady has got to be going down there for them to not have been paying royalties for close to 10 years. I wonder if a similar situation could happen with the Star Trek games? I hope not. I haven't gotten them yet.

Interplay is made of literally lawyers. The company as it was no longer exists and has been a husk to get money from IPs for years. They deserve no sort of sympathy.
I know a bit about the situation but I'm not really sure I'm allowed to talk about it. It's a super bad situation, I'll leave it at that.

Reminds me of Terminal Reality Inc. All that's left of it are lawyers.

Reminds me of Atari. No longer develops anything and only exists to milk profit from the games they publish.

Well if you want D2 Complete with Vertigo expansion it's your only alternative anyway. :dukeaffirmative:

Relationship between GOG and other stores is the silliest thing ever. They claim to be "DRM-Free", yet they force me to buy the game again on GOG if it's available on both Steam and GOG but I only own it on Steam. I probably need to talk to GOG support (and Steam, since I own Mass Effect on Origin but EA shit key can't be redeemed on Steam) to see what they can do for me, though. The standard way you add owned games to services is by redeeming keys and GOG of course doesn't have any, so impossible to "redeem".

I'm so glad I own the rare 1.4a version of The Definitive Collection that has the working D1 music and Levels of The World, Vertigo, and the Mission Builder utility. I really take comfort in knowing I have these conveniently compressed in RAR files in case anything happens to my discs, backed up to the cloud.

>Buying Mass Effect

You're doing it wrong. There's a reason The Greatest Thing To Ever Grace Gamerkind™ deserves to be pirated with all DLC. 30 hours of extra content between ME 1, 2, and 3. Content that actually matters to the plot (Excluding Citadel). And you're gonna give EA money for that shit? Really?

Tell EA to suck a dick. Your waifu deserves better.

DO it For HER.

Person of Color. I have The Definitive Collection. How do I know that I have Descent 1 V 1.4a? Do I have to install the game to find out?

Does the RAR files have the ISO's in them? Do I use 7-zip for compressing RAR files and what program do you use to copy the discs into ISO files?

I also have Descent 2: Infinite Abyss. 2 copies each of PS1 Descent and Descent Maximum. And finally the GOG.com version of Descent 1-3.

EXE size maybe? I'd wait for Viper to tell you.

Intro videos were exclusive to PSX or is there a D1 version on PC that has them? D1X-Rebirth can play them.

Load setup.exe. It will say it on the title bar.

The original creators of Descent are making a new Six-degrees-of-freedom shooter as well, and it looks so much better than what Interplay is doing with the Descent franchise:

I'm hyped as hell for this.
