3D Realms Shutting Down

I'm not good at knowing much about this sort of thing, but since 3DR is dead or "dying" who own's or will own DNF? or is just no ones after this? who or what group of people would make the decision to pass it on to another developer to finish it? (sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, i am just curious)

No one knows yet... And we won't know until someone decides to make it public. Certainly there's all sorts of stuff going on behind the scenes right now, but we won't be privy to it for a while, I'd say.

I think a lot of the problem with the Duke name now is that it's a JOKE in the industry. It has become synonymous with failed deadlines... soiled by "when it's done". The franchise is toxic and I think a lot of companies would prefer to steer clear of it for now.

My personal thoughts are that Duke will disappear for a while... And when the recession eases off, we might see some other companies become a bit more interested in buying up the IP, if they can manage the legal wranglings. Of course it won't be the same without 3DR... but let's face it, the game was never destined to be finished at 3DR.

Has there been any official word by George Broussard yet?

If not, fine. But, if he says anything in the meantime, could someone PM me with what he says? Since I am going away for a while.

Like the rest of you I'm torn up over the closer of 3DR and the fact that DNF will never see the light of day. But, I've been thinking alot about the behavior of George and 3DR over the years. It doesn't seem to me that they really deserve all the respect and loyalty that the fans of the original Duke3d game have shown them all these years. Think of all the fantic fan based Duke mods on other game engines that they shut down over the years. It was true Lovers of the orignal game trying to make something cool and updated to keep their Duke love alive. What was the point of theatening to slap a lawsuit on these people? Think of all the cool Duke related mods that we could have been playing all these years. I could almost understand of they would have updated Duke3d to atleast play on winXP. Selling a DOS only game on thier site for so many years, are you kidding me? They coulndn't atleast do a simple patch? They finally release the source code years later and let the fans patch it for them. To little to late. By that time most players had long since moved on. If the rumors are true that they started DNF over from scratch 2 1/2 years ago. That means we were constantly being strung along with endless lies and deception. Actions like this don't warrent such loyalty. I think the true loyalty should go to the Mappers, coders mod authors that have been updating Duke all these years. I'd bet that 90% of the people that have been showing up on these forums over the past few days have no idea that there have been updates to the engine. We should be taking this opportunity to let people know that the original Duke game has been updates and is alive and well. Maybe even get some donations for the guys working on the new renderer and maybe attract sombody that could work on some modern network code. Bring Duke into the future. It's obvious that the people working on updating Duke actually can finish what they start. Unlike some people we know ;) .
Go here to keep track on the latest Polymost news.

What the Duke Nukem franchise has, or had, that no other shooters have is a sense of humor. There really hasn't been anything like Duke Nukem 3D ever since it was released - we've all been waiting for DNF to fill that gap. Duke is the amalgamation of every 80's action hero, then turned up to 11... The environments were realistic and interactive, filled with injokes, brilliantly designed... Can you remember how amazing those levels were back in 1996... how much of a breath of fresh air the sci-fi/horror/comedy/action in a CITY was? I can still run through those levels and have a blast. Duke Nukem is the anti-thesis to the sort of games we get year in year out nowadays. Now, that's not to say I don't enjoy Bioshock, or Call of Duty and all of those sorts of games, but dark, brooding, serious games and war games become a bit tiring after a while. You need something like Duke to balance it all out. Unfortunately, now we'll never get that.
I understand and I also agree with you completely. Duke Nukem 3D is the funneist FPS game I ever placed on the PC back in the day and it sucks that we won't get something like that now on the PC or consoles.

I don't understand why everyone thinks DNF will never get released.

Well, waiting forever already kinda contributes to this.

Everyone's sick of waiting, and hearing this news is basically like "We're delaying the game your waiting for. That's right, you'll have to wait even longer for an original game. HAR HAR NA NA YOU CAN'T PLAY"

Well, it's not complete. If what some people say are true, it was still at LEAST another year away from shipping. The company that holds the IP is now defunct. It may be completed and released by another company, but it won't be the same as it would have been under 3DR. I'd say there'll be legal battles before it goes back into production... if ever. What you have to realize is that DNF is poison in the gaming press and industry... Hell, it took 12 years but it slowly killed one of the leaders in the FPS industry... The future for the IP is uncertain right now, that's all.

Actually Sequitur, if what that "brother of a 3DRealms employee" said was true, then it was half a year away before they finished. November was when they trying to push to finish it.

The game was a LOT further along development than the video represented.

I disagree there. "No One Live Forever" both 1 and 2, had a lot of humor in them. Granted, it was not rauncy a la Duke but the the Frachise did with 60's spy epics what Duke did for Sci Fi Action films.
But I agree that one of the major problem with FPSers nowdays is they take themselved too damn seriously.

I fully agree. I think a lot of the hard core fans don't relise just what a huge joke in the industry DNF has been for a number of years. And I think there is also doubt about how big a fanbase there is left. You have a lot of gamers who were infants at the time Duke 3d came out, have never played Duke 3d, don't even know what a C prompt is, and know him only as the guy in that game that has been taking forever to come out.
ANd that is the idea that this is a publicity stunt is so lame. It would destroy what little creditbility 3dRealms has left.

Of course i dont know any specifics, but it seems to me that George and Scott left the project financing part open to the very last minute. How could they do that? Any businessman makes plans and calculations and secures deals with backing up contracts on paper. It seems like George just thought that, oh well, only when i completely run out of money then i will see if someone is willing to invest some in the project. Even if take 2 did "promise" some money, they certainly didnt have contract to back up that promise, and every businessman knows that unless you have signed contract you have nothing.

Every businessman have an estimates, budgets etc... and George and Scott should have known for how long they have money left to finance this project and based on that they should have finished this whatever it takes or make a signed contrat to have extra funds from somewhere.

Then again maybe 3DR was in finance troubles much earlier and they allready got funding from take 2, but i would think that in that case take 2 would give them that extra to finish the project as they have allready invested in it.
