3D Realms Shutting Down
#1381 Posted 14 May 2009 - 05:50 AM
Actually i can even understand George for not saying anything regarding the future of DNF because he have made that mistake before, i guess he doesnt want to cause any false promises or give people hope while he is not certain of the outcome. I guess if we ever hear about DNF again it would be: "its done!"

Instead of people actually getting in his face about this thing.. everyone nodded and said "Of course. When it's done. George knows more about making games than me, so sure."
When it's done is just not reliable in the real world, though.. and the fact is, nothing is ever as good as its hype. He should have been releasing on a regular basis, and just accepted that DNF was a pipe dream.. but that he can explore and see the things he wants in the "perfect" Duke game in a variety of games.
Half Life fans love Half Life because of the universe that has built up around it. This has come at the cost of many, many games. The fans continue to buy the games because they like what they see.
George should have accepted that people aren't perfect, the perfect game doesn't exist, but that he could try to deliver fun and entertaining games once every two years or so.
That way, he would have remained relevant.
But right now, he's irrelevant. He's a joke to many, and he's someone who made an "old game" to many others.
Totally true, however if George actually pulled it off it would of been something great. However ....like a dog, George's nose/face was rubbed in the giant piss puddle he left on the floor and like a coward he has ran off to go hide. Hopefully he has learned a good lesson from all this. However he might actually have something to say soon and prove us wrong but till then my thoughts stick.

3DR is totally huge but as with any team people come and go from there, but the legacy they built was the games they made which always stay. Duke was a big part of that legacy more so than the loving hands that put it together.

Would they have made a statement about their game?

I'd hope all they do to Joe's account is to strip him from admin/mod access and let him be a standard user like us instead of completely disabling his account. THis way, he can still post like one of us.
#1386 Posted 14 May 2009 - 06:42 AM
Maybe there will be an official statement tomorrow since it is the last day for Joe and Brian etc who are cleaning up the site. They were/are moving the site to a smaller, weaker server etc including the forum.

People aren't expecting him to promise something or give hope. George just needs to say the current status of DNF. That is all.

yeah, but unless he says that DNF is totally canned, his words will be interpreted as hope. I mean if he says that "i will try to find another studio who would finish DNF" or "i will try to find an investor" or something like that then people will get all excited and if something goes wrong again then everybody will feel again that George let them down. I think that its best to keep quiet... let people live their lives and not to stirr up another madness.

Everything gets closed down bit by bit.
The large thread got nuked. The Apogee/3DR Memories threads are all locked....
I really wonder how the official press release on the matter will be - if there will be any.

I wonder if they just wanted they wanted to lock the memories thread and leave them alone as Joe probably didnt want them to explode like every other thread due mainly to the closure of 3DR and GB using Duke as his personal buttwipe. Well speculation anyway.

Did anybody think that George is not posting any news because he is in the middle of negotiations that will tell him if he will sell the game or not?
Did anybody think that maybe not even George Broussard knows if DNF will ever ship or not, at this point?
Everybody is seeing George as a guru but ever since those monster topics started over at 3dr I haven't seen not even one guy saying that George MIGHT NOT know YET what will happen with dnf! Maybe he simply doesn't know because after being screwed by take two, instead of saying FUCK IT and releasing the news that duke is dead, he obsessively started trying to get it sold with another publisher.
If he would be doing that, it would be very obvious to shut up until he is 100% certain that there is no chance left for the game to get sold.
Who is to say that he hasn't found a new publisher already that he will announce later this week or at the begining of the next week after they officially sign the papers?

Everybody is seeing George as a guru but ever since those monster topics started over at 3dr I haven't seen not even one guy saying that George MIGHT NOT know YET what will happen with dnf simply because after being screwed by take two for he didn't see it coming and now instead of saying FUCK IT and releasing the news that duke is dead, he is obsessively trying to get it sold with another publisher.

He'd also shut up if there was nothing really left to say.
You seem to be in a level of denial. Hundreds of projects get cancelled every year. Since the recession has made the economy go wacky, even more have been canceled this year. It's not the first thing to die on the vine in software, and it won't be the last.
This is unfortunate, yes.. but it's also just part of the life and death of software companies.
I think it's more likely that we'll see the assets transferred over to Apogee, LLC after DNT hits. I think we'll see them buy the rights to the IP. I think George will sell some of the technical UnReal engine modifications back to ID , and will try to sell some of the other technical assets out that way. I think he'll sell his patents out or license them out.
It's sad that it ends this way, but this isn't the only company that's ended this way. Even ACES, the Microsoft Flight Sim team, was all closed up and let go... and they have an extremely popular product that is almost a guranteed sale... owned by a company that releases tons of products and makes millions if not billions. But it wasn't enough, and their code and hard work are now gone. Sad fact of life. Anyone in this field knows this happens.

No "I will" or "I hope". Just the current state of DNF. "Cancelled", "Put on indefinite hold" or something like that.

Well thats just speculation too what George is or isn't doing or what he has or has not done. If he would update im sure alot of this hate or pointing the blame would be greatly minimized as they see he is trying to do something sooner rather than later finding out about it. So what we have going on now in the forums and what you have read since the 6th is the end result of him doing that. Its fair game.
