I never liked doom as a kid (aka wasn't allowed to play it) so I never had fun with it. ;)

Sorry, buddy. DooM is one of my favorite games of all time and I WILL set ridiculously high standards for it, even for teaser trailers. Teasers are supposed to be first impressions, aren't they?

Not one thing I have said is apologist tripe. Explain to me how you could even classify me in that light.

We all have high expectations for all the games we love, but you people are unrealistic. get a grip maybe.

That was a great first impression to me. Explain to me in all your wisdom how you would have made that better with all the resources available to you?

I am genuinely intriqued how you would have done the teaser?

and further more, before you call what I say apologist tripe I would like to tknow where you are in comparison to my standpoint? What exactly where you expecting? and again, how would you have made it so much better.

God forbid you did a teaser and people like you came on here and shat all over it. I wonder how you would feel. Or would you even have the cahones to actually puta teaser on here if you actually ever did develop a game.

My point here is very simple, andi ts not malicious, like many of you people are. it is this:

Give it a rest for a change, be happy for another game, take the wait and see approach, don't jump down peoples throats over a fucking teaser design of an enemy in Doom. It was a good teaser, everything looked fine. Honestly I find people on here as in real life, its always the ones that have done nothing that know everything. This last sentence wasn't directed at anyone. The simple point is how could you not be happy about another Doom title. They will most certainly shore up any deficiencies from the doom 3 disappointment. Its pretty hard to makes things right if no one gives you a chance.

That is all I am saying. Everyone needs to get down off their high horses. I don't see any carmacks, or level lords or any other people that have changed the game on here saying these things, maybe take a page from their book.

If that demon design is indicative at all of what we'll be seeing in the rest of the game (at least the demons), then it will be yet another generic overdesigned piece of garbage.

Sorry, I fully intend to be critical of every AAA game that comes out because we've been getting nothing but drivel for the past 6+ years. AAA games suck. I'm not even picking on Doom. I don't discriminate. I'm not just going to be happy that "there's a new game in a beloved franchise." If the game sucks it might as well not have been made. And we have every reason not to be hopeful in this case and no reason to believe that anything has changed since the Carmack story. Teasers are designed for hype. They're going to want you excited about their game even if (especially if!) It's a piece of crap (A:CM). I'm not falling for it until I see some gameplay and a review from more than one reputable source. I'd also love a demo.

That said, I've already mentioned that if it turns out to be decent I'd gladly love to be proven wrong. It's what I've been waiting for in the long line off massive crap that's been coming down the assembly line. I'm not that closed-minded. So far I think the design of the demon(s?) is a mistake. It's an artistic decision I disagree with and that's not ridiculous or uncalled for. That's legitimate.

A year is NOT a long time to turn around a games company and an AAA title.

If you actually read my previous post, you'd find that I said that I AM looking forward to the game. I AM excited to see DooM again, but with what's happened to id in the last few years, I'm not expecting much. I'm really HOPING that all that information is wrong and we get a good game.

Just not expecting it.

You've made a few references to the Carmack story, is this an actual proper story? Where can I read it?

I posted a link in a previous post in this thread.

Basically, its:

"At one point, a source told me, the Doom 4 team had a big meeting in which company leaders talked about what Doom meant to them. John Carmack got up in front of everyone and said something like, "Doom means two things: demons and shotguns.""

There's a lot more to the article, but that's the gist.

That's from the Kotaku piece. There may be more more elaborate tellings of that elsewhere, but that's the one I read.

You know what I never got? Why shotguns are called shotguns. All firearms shoot, and they can all be called guns, so why a shotgun is called it but nothing else always intrigued me.
Same goes for oranges. You don't call a banana yellow or celery as green (although there are collared greens).
Its like when English was being created everyone had all these good names for objects but those were just half assed.
Then again maybe I'm just a complete simpleton.

Lunick got it. Shells get filled with pellets, aka shot. Most guns fire rounds, aka bullets. Shells can get a large single slug sometimes too. A slug will destroy the rump roast on your venison though, triple aught buckshot does the trick for me :)

Yeah... as Lunick said. Shot = small round pellets in various sizes. Shotgun = gun which fires Shot.

I feel like the teaser brings bad news.
There is a voice off telling you the story.

Like, thetTeaser is actually focused on telling the story more than anything; like they think it's important and it's what people are interested in, like they think the story will 'tease' them.

Holy shit this is a bad sign.

also wasn't the door sound in the Doom 3 teaser too?

There may be story in the game? How horrible!!!!!

Frightfan: Should we wait until GT is persuaded to release the entire Blood source code?

Matt Saettler: Don't know about the Blood source from lith. I doubt they'll release it.

Frightfan: [Jason Hall] already said he would if it were up to him, but it isn't - it's GTI's game now.

Matt Saettler: Jace is wrong. I'm the one that negotiated the contracts. Jace probably doesn't even know what's really in them....

Stop trolling, you know very well what I mean. There is a FOCUS on story in even just the teaser. Carmack once said story in a video game was like story in porn movies, it's expected to be there but it's not important. This goes against that philosophy, therefore it goes against Doom.

You wouldn't put such a heavy focus on story in a teaser if you didn't think it was important.

You really can't fault his logic.

Actually, I can think of at least 100 different ways in which a Doom game can be ruined if it's built only taking Carmack's sentence as the main starting point for a sequel.
There is sooooooo much more to the Doom recipe than "Demons and shotguns"
I can think of at least 1000 different games that can feature demons as the enemies and shotguns as your weapons and none of those games will remind anybody of doom, not even 1%...
Saying the Doom ip is defined by just demons and shotguns is like saying that bipedal human walking only requires bones and muscles...
So expected of Carmack to take a very complex artistic piece and define with just 2 words that relate to the physical world.
Carmack is a scientist not an artist and his views on what makes a great game will always be strongly influenced by his technical oriented thinking.
Carmack has a history with these facepalm things that he says when he wants to define a complex art piece by just a few mathematically aligned words...

"Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."
He has also said this idiotic thing before and I'm sure he has since revised his thinking because if he still believes this, then he too is ignorant just like anybody else, no matter how smart and open minded he is when it comes to tech stuff.

His answers regarding anything are always going to be very close to mathematical results.

If you want somebody to tell you what doom is about, ask Romero.
Romero might be a fuckup 10 times over but when it comes to Doom, he just KNOWS what it's about.
Even some of the die hard oldschool doom mappers and gamers from the 90's can tell you what Doom is about, much better than Carmack can.
Carmack coded the doom engine and to him, that's what doom is about.

So no, Doom is not about just shotguns and demons, that's an extremely superficial way of looking at what makes Doom great.

In my opinion, Doom is about an unique ambient, it's about vivid colors contrasting each other, especially red blue and green, it's about level shapes, it's about sfx, it's about music, it's about how every single enemy looks and sounds, it's about EVERY weapon that's part of the arsenal not just the shotguns, it's about the pleasure of goring huge hordes of enemies at once, it's about the pleasure and frustration of finding the last keycard when you have little ammo and little health left, it's about finding secrets where you least expect them to be or where you already know them to be, it's about seeing those unique items for the first time in your life, like that blue face or the green one, or seeing the blue health vials or the skull helmets with green glowing eyes, the marine face that's part of the hud, the texture for the exit door with the little red exit sign above it, about that map that you see after you beat a level...
And until I see some doom1/2 items, weapons and enemies converted into proper looking and animated 3d models that properly reproduce their sprite counterparts, I will have to say that it's also about it's original sprites!

Why just shotgun when everybody knows that if there are 2 weapons that define doom, then those are the chainsaw and the other is the bfg9000.

The simple fact that in the doom4 teaser there is what appears to be the classic doom1/2 door texture remade accompanied by the old sound effect, single handedly make me expect doom4 to be connected to doom1/2 more than doom3 was.
If that was just some gimmick used in the teaser and it won't be reflected in the actual game, then shame on them.
