Bombshell

Not only did they ruin Duke Nukem, they ruined Bombshell as well... This is 10 year old graphics, even in the CGI intro... I mean... Is this a joke? I'm not even a 3D animator per sé (I'm a 3D engine coder first) and I can do better than this shit... The character design looks like it was done by an angry gothic 14 year old boy full of Teenage Angst, the game format is completely inadequate for the character's IP establishment needs (top down RPG with punkster robo girl to build an action hero IP on? WTF?), and the robotic arm seems like it was designed by the same guy that came up with the Monster Truck. (I'm not even mentioning the polygon intersection faults I spotted during the trailer) Duke ruined by Gearbox, Bombshell by Interceptor. And I'm the guy without a dayjob...

Wow... Just, wow... I think Scott Miller has been hand-slapping himself continuously since the reveal trailer just like me, as I'm sure we see eye to eye on character design in service of long-term IP building.

I think announcing this early was crazy. For other than AAA titles, I don't understand why you would do that more than a few weeks out. Metaphorically it would be like someone announcing they were going to make dinner next month. The whole of the content is a long paragraph at best... "Yeah, we are having Turkey, mashed potatoes, corn..." etc etc... it is NOT a big deal. It only takes so long to discuss and hype dinner... and all of us Duke Fans are pretty tired of long waits for Dinner. (I would have said we are fed-up, but that would have been TOO Punny)

To me, this early revel-announcement feels like renting a billboard to advertise an 8 year olds front yard lemonade stand. You don't put an advertisement in the newspaper to let people know you are going to WalMart. It is NOT a big deal to most gamers..

Another reactionary view I have of this is something like when someone restores a vehicle from a junkyard into PERFECT, like new condition. If you start with a Volkswagen Beetle, when you get through you have a perfect Volkswagen Beetle... uh... yay? The same effort into a Ferrari gives you a perfect condition Ferrari. Some people want perfect Beetles, but the majority does not. Making a game about what YOU want is important, but because this is a company, there MUST be balance between what customers want and what the company wants or thinks is desirable.

No matter the effort put into a top down shooter, it will still be a top down shooter is the point... and they simply don't have the commercial following of a FPS. The point is that a mediocre FPS will sell many times more than a "Perfectly Restored" Top-Down/Isometric shooter. Does this make the Beetle bad, or the new Bombshell game bad? Of course not, it just make them less desirable with the same effort. Not a good way to re-start a new company in my opinion.

But the game is obviously a salvage from when Fuke was supposed to be in it. If Duke was the character, this would be a bold new direction for him (it wouldn't necessarily be the best, or a long-term transition into the genre, but it would be something different). Part of the reason of a Duke top-down RPG might also have been to avoid stepping directly on Gearbox's territory, not that it made any difference.

Long story short Bombshell has been one clusterfuck after another so far. Still holding out for a Reverse Gearbox but I'm not holding my breath.

If this is in fact a Duke Nukem Game salvage it would make more sense as they simply can't make a FPS right now with their Flagship Character... The idea this could be a Duke Nukem based game is its only hope of being anymore than an niche market game, in my opinion.

If this were my company and I wanted a Bold New Direction, I would most certainly have chosen the Duke Nukem direction in First Person in the form of Endangered Species finished... that is both bold and new and because there is no idea of HOW this game should work. The new "3D Realms" would not have been compared to anything else relative to its design and story etc. It could be their own creation in that sense. The point being that it could have been their own creation but with the main franchise character and would seem to be still under the Unfinished Titles part of the 3D Realms/Gearbox agreement.

If it were between this Bombshell game and a Duke Nukem Side-scroller like the early Duke Nukem 4Ever, I would be WAY more likely to buy the side-scroller (thinking Manhattan Project here) than I would the Isometric or top-down game... but that is my personal preference with disregard to what the general gaming community might want should those be the choices.

Yeah yeah yeah... You rock on! You're absolutely right about everything and you rule, man! The explanation is quite simple. They thought only action games featuring Duke Nukem were property of Gearbox, and they could weasel in a top-down RPG featuring the character. When they found out they couldn't (lawsuit and all happening), they just quickly replaced some game assets and had Bomb Shell star in what would otherwise be a Duke game which wouldn't be a Duke game in the first place given the game's Niche Genre. Now, I have no proven authority to deem your reaction "Da Truth ™" (*cough* I am a game programmer though Michele Rocco Smeets / Mike The Spike*cough*) but surely one will see through the blanket of crappyness and will prevail in their quest to uproot the stinkyness of this title... Dear Interceptor friends... No. Just, NO! Duke sheds tears upon your creation, I saw two, three rolling from beneath his Ray bans down at the Interceptor H8te bar downtown yesterday and I'm not lying. All you'll do is break even on the project Bjorn (or whatever the Interceptor Dude's name is), barely if you're lucky that is and your name (Bjorn?) (which was already smudged after the Rise Of The Tired "Remake") will be befouled forever. Don't do it - I wouldn't

PS. Hope there aren't any old-timers here or they'd ban me upon discovering my Secrat identity without realizing I'm a 78-year old triple-married man by now and have learned to play by Da Rules by my 4th divorce (at which the judge ordered an execution, which I survived due to my invulnerability). BTW I suck at math.
At any rate, Bombshell sucks. That is all she wrote.

PS 2. I truly shed tears to what happened to the Duke franchise. Which is why I am reviving the spirit of it with my next game, Mike The Spike 3D: Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image That's right, you can carry unlimited guns.

Lol!
Yeah, he's getting a lot of bad press lately due to the Ukraine crisis, which causes me to up my gun collection giving I'm glamorizing him in this upcoming game (which, as the world's only true action hero, he deserves), but I'm not the one to be swayed by public opinion! Putin is one tough world leader :)

She looks like bad character design out of touch with reality. I had concepts for female lead games, and my girls lived in the real world 21st century with realistic background stories so you could feel for the character. Robotic arm my foot.

Go for it. There's Fresch who looks like he desperately needs some industry talent to back him (even if he doesn't know it yet). I might even try given that I can literally do every aspect of game design and learned it all from the best, though I have no show-reel assembled (well, I have an acting one) and I live almost 1000 miles from where their offices are. Sometimes you just gotta shove those skills up in someone's face - you have a "no", a "yes" you can get.

LMAO! Now if I designed Bomb Shell because it was my game, she'd look like this: Posted Imageor this: Posted Image or this Posted Image. But not this: Posted Image.

Come on. You ask a random concept artist, probably one working in Turkey 5 days a week drawing caricatures of flatulant tourists at the beach to come up with a "bad-ass female action game protagonist" and he'll come up with Interceptor's "Bomb Shell". All concept artists come up with this. Just Google around, everyone's drawin' up half-bald gothic punk girls with guns. You need some understanding of real character design before you can create someone that will carry a successful IP for years to come. Bomb Shell was supposed to be the Female Duke, I know about the whole Gearbox IP lawsuit situation, but don't call it Bomb Shell unless you're sticking to what the purpose was for that character: To create a female counterpart that's another character (Duke)'s ideal woman. The fictional persona of Duke, would vomit over a skanky punkster robot-arm girl like this and the fans know it. First of all she needs to be blonde for the audience to perceive her as Duke's counterpart, as was originally planned by 3DR. I know the IP has been sold to Gearbox and it doesn't matter right now, but on the long term it is best to think ahead (in case of a possible IP acquirement).

Oh, and you don't launch a successful game IP on a top-down perspective "action rpg" game unless it's a warcraft clone. Interceptor knew the game format was crap, but they thought they could capitalize on Duke's IP because they assumed they were allowed to make such a type of game. When it turned out that wasn't the case, instead of just cancelling the game or assigning "Joe Bloke" as a protagonist and hope to catch a quick buck for the lost investment, they thought "let's use the Bomb Shell IP we just acquired hastingly, to try and capitalize on that. Oh, and lets leave the game a top down action RPG to save money on redesign efforts and completely redefine the Bomb Shell character in the process, even though it was our only chance after the acquisition of 3DR to monetize one of the few IPs that are worth something, so lets change it completely to something Bjork, our 16 year old gothic concept artist came up with after a wet dream. And get the janitor in here and force him to do a trailer, since we mistakenly payed him 20 bucks last week instead of 10 and he owes us one."

The ironic thing about Bombshell is that they have a much better main character design:

Posted Image

That's cool as fuck. She really does look like the type that'll wouldn't take shit from anyone instead of being a dork trying too hard to be badass and sexy. Instead, they made Bombshell and her idiotic design the main character and wasted this design on an NPC.

I am pretty sure what we have seen isn't her final version. Just throwing that one out there. If it is I will agree with all of you and start throwing bananas and rotten tomatoes at interceptor. But not a second before that. ^_^

She reminds me of a female version of Nick Fury.
