Wow, I was only wondering yesterday who did the art for Keen 6. Great sleuthing :)

the unused ROTT cover

That's some great art, apparently it was used for some jewelcase shareware release?

This isn't too exciting, but in my random stumblings, I managed to come across the on-line portfolio of Ken Rieger, the illustrator who created the box art for Commander Keen: Aliens Ate My Babysitter, Wolfenstein 3D (the original, not the later Julie Bell version), Spear of Destiny, Blake Stone: Planet Strike, and the unused ROTT cover as well as the original Apogee logo itself:
http://www3.sympatic...eger/index.html

Ken Rieger did the Box art for:
Commander Keen: Aliens Ate My Babysitter
Blake Stone: Planet Strike!
Rise of the Triad: The HUNT Begins
Wolfenstein 3D (Not only the Box art)
Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of Destiny

Les Dorscheid did the art for:
Blake Stone: Aliens Of Gold
Rise of the Triad: Dark War

I would love to see the box art of the Software Labs Wolfenstein 3D Box!

I have never seen that one before!
I know of this one though (I believe it's the UK box art):

Is it just me, or is this cover cheesy as hell?

Oh no, it's certainly cheesy. I think BJ looks pretty cool, and the guards and Hitler, but the ones that are marching don't look like Nazis at all, so it makes no sense (I'm guessing they're drawn to be mutants, but again that makes no sense).

The Software Labs Wolfenstein 3D box is a rare one.
It could be that it is Ken Riegers Art for the Wolfenstein 3D Titlepic.
I also would really like to see this very rare Wolfenstein box art:

They certainly do look like clones.

The cover itself is some great art, even though it's not meant to be taken seriously :)

I've been thinking to myself, is that old Pigcop gun supposed to be an MP5, a Double-Barrel Shotgun, a Double-Barrel SMG, or a Double-Barrel Shotgun that looks like a Double-Barrel MP5?

In the sketches the Pig Cop allways was holding a double-barrel shotgun.

That's not anything like how it actually ended up modeled or how it operated in-game, though. It was more like a SMG that fired the same rounds as the player's pistol, sort of like the zombie guy in Doom has a rifle that fires the same rounds as the player's pistol there. Pigcops predated any implementation of a shotgun weapon into the game by quite a bit.

Someone remembers this pigcop from a magazine?
(the pic with the fire background is the original art...)

That's from Land of Babes I think.

Don't know.
But this one could be an early version of the overlord:

Yeah, but I haven't seen any yet where the design actually differed. There are some renders where he has no weapon and there are some frames with earlier versions of his animations plus some extra actions that were never used in the final game, but nothing too significant. It does look like maybe he was originally intended to fight both with and without the gun, in addition to being intended to punch Duke and to fire missiles.

Hopefully not entirely off-topic, I wanted to ask an actually a bit more mundane thing. Did Duke3D shareware v1.2 exist or not after all? If it didn't, why the story with a "limited release leak" in the readme?

Despite the file name it is actually from Prey(Tom hall era).

Okay. But what do you think is more correct.
Chuck Jones (the man who painted the scetch) or the magazine scan?

The sketch is also claimed to be from Prey,

Here,

http://web.archive.o...com/p_prey.html

and here,

http://www.matero.ne...tania/Prey.html

(The image t_cbeast.gif described on that page as "His friend, on the other hand, leans more towards the bash and slash. No matter which enemy youĂre up against in Prey, expect them to look menacing and very realistic." was the same sketch.)

http://talonbrave.in...HConceptArt.zip

More evidence its actually from Prey.

It was so long ago I suspect Chuck just forgot or did just not bother making a distinction for whatever reason.

I can't be giving all the secrets away!

I will say though that it has quick kick that works like 1.4/1.5, without the double kick glitch from 1.3D. :) Even kills slimers, as intended.

How long did it took them to change the SMG into a shotgun?

Is there any prerelease of Plutonium Pack?

It really depends on how you look at it.

I recall the guys mentioning something about "It's impossible" and "Going postal" existing in some alternative form, possibly intended for vanilla release. Really different from the current versions however.
And then Derelict is already in LD as well. That makes it 3 maps.

Possibly some other maps as well. Expander too existed before vanilla was out.

Overall, it seems that PP has loads of scrapped content that just got polished

When it comes to quick kick, it behaves very differently in .99 and I think even up to 1.1 where it just does a really slow kick with the "mighty foot engaged!" text while lowering the weapon automatically for the kick itself.
This just means that Q-kick evolved a lot during that time and 1.3d behaviour is indeed a leftover bug from all the last minute changes it had.
In future versions, there are also subtle speed differences between Q and regular kick, not to mention that it already feels off to have it in two different places, and finally: why does the other one need a hud text for the same action ? :)

Not to mention that it all could have been some remaining balancing from the times when enemies took much less damage to die.
