The version of E1L2 in that video is actually pretty crazy. The bar area is a lot closer to LameDuke than the final version and what became the hidden keycard in the cabinet was MUCH cooler originally, IMO. The whole bar comes out of the floor. I can see why it was cut as the way it was done was definitely more of a puzzle aspect than what the final version ended up being, but it's still really cool. Thankfully most of these versions of the maps were still close enough to the shareware version's release that the tile positions didn't really change, so they more or less work with EDuke32, with the caveat that you occasionally see stuff like HUD sprites laying on the ground as world items--mini-HUD "ammo" box was once a +48 pistol ammo item pickup or something, etc.

Did the pig cops behavior change when their art was changed? This version they have double barrel shotguns, and it looks like they fire both barrels (but not at the same time).

That one is one of the shareware betas released to the Apogee Beta Conference on Software Creations BBS back in the day.

I have never heard about this beta conference thing before. I verily hope that you guys will also publish a detailed account of such events related to the Apogee game development. This is a very interesting topic on its own.

I have only read about Blake Stone closed beta test at the old 3DR forums. Someone of the original testers still had the beta and posted screenshots.

Also IIRC a Raptor beta was mentioned in the same thread.

UPD: Here's that thread, but all screenies are gone.

We have two, and there is another one circulating that leaked years ago.

Holleeeee shit. This changes everything. "Credit Screen" completely throws my model for when certain Pigcops appear in certain builds way off.

What is the delta between those and the retail release? Any unreleased maps?

EDIT:
Would you be able to comment if you guys have found source code to other apogee games(e.g. wacky wheels) and are those planned to be released if said code has been found in the first place :)?

You'll know more when we release the first batch of goodies. I got Hendricks and TX to help me dig through thousands of our files, only focusing of what we can legally share with you guys.

Stay tuned, and keep an eye on http://3drealms.com :)

I'm jealous you guys have access to the Prey alpha's/etc
The early version of Prey is such a mystery and not much was ever shown (the game from the 90's), so it'd be amazing to see what was actually created and never saw the light of day.

At least tell us more about how the portal and gravity and the special tech works in those builds.

Lemme go dig up a few Frankenbuilds and do a quick writeup about that when I have more pressing matters to attend to. It'll be no biggie.

Yeah, maybe some things we don't even know to begin with too. They're bound to do it one day anyway, so might as well take a quick look at it. This is also a chance to know what went wrong.

Dunno how many Sonic fans we have around here, but a similar reconstruction effort is in progress with some development dumps of Sonic X-treme by a team over at Sonic Retro.

It blew my mind seeing your post there. Very exciting time to be a Sonic and 3D Realms fan.

BTW guys, I suppose you also have Ravager stuff, right? The shareware version of Alien Rampage v1.0 (can be found here) still calls the game Ravager in the ordering form, and the main data file is called RAVAGER.GOO in the supplied documentation. Does this mean that the first release of Alien Rampage was actually pretty close to the latest Ravager build, with just the title changed?

I'm so happy we actually have more Sonic X-Treme stuff! I've been chasing that dragon for a decade. Chris Senn released the level files and assets a while back. Someone created a mockup of them, it was called Project AXSX I think.

Also if anyone has an Nvidia NV1 card let me know, I will pay top dollar for it. I need to play that PC port of XTreme, NOW!

Hendricks can you PM cooljerk? My account is locked and I can't PM.

His NV1 computer he's making for JR TOTALLY lacks L2 cache. The brown COAST socket is empty. It's gonna be really hard to judge performance without any L2. I don't see any cache chips on the board in the other photo but the keyboard blocks my view. Some boards have both soldered cache and a socket, he should definitely check that shit out.

They're currently reverse engineering the Sega Saturn controller header pinout on an Nvidia NV1 graphics card. The card they acquired was missing the controller bracket.

What I want to know is why the fuck are the parallel are serial ports cut?

Joe has posted another ROTT enemy video capture session, this time featuring Lee Jackson, Allen H. Blum, and a piece of cardboard as the monks:

I was wondering if the Tekwar and Witchaven II SETUP.EXE source codes where found in 3DR's source archives?

I'd really like to get them, especially WH2 since the setup program needs some adjustments, like no CD and skip option...

I highly doubt it. It's the generic HMI setup program that appears with a lot of other games as far as I am aware.
You might have better luck stabbing something custom together as those are mainly just text based interfaces.

If it's not in the tekwar sources then it's not in there.

Employees of 3DR coded their own tool for setup, this is something that appears in blood / sw / duke / RR
Build ships with one by default (the same as in LD) and that was coded by Ken. I don't think that any "shipped game" aside from kenbuild really uses this.

For WH2, you can probably just modify the sources and remove the CD check completely.

I've seen nothing related to Capstone in the data.

The WH2 has a neat custom SETUP.EXE not in the src.

It has the problem of re-installing the game after sound setup, THEN it lets you setup your controls and video.
There's no skip as far as I can tell. Your forced in re-installing the entire game.

EDIT: Thanks H266

EDIT2: I managed to just copy the INSTDATA folder over, and use the command prompt SETUP LOCAL to bypass the CD check. NVM; with the LOCAL command your able to set sound and controls without it re-installing. Man I don't know why I didn't think of this before.

All of the Capstone BUILD engine games source codes have been released IIRC (Witchaven 1 and 2, Tekwar, Corridor 8).

This isn't too exciting, but in my random stumblings, I managed to come across the on-line portfolio of Ken Rieger, the illustrator who created the box art for Commander Keen: Aliens Ate My Babysitter, Wolfenstein 3D (the original, not the later Julie Bell version), Spear of Destiny, Blake Stone: Planet Strike, and the unused ROTT cover as well as the original Apogee logo itself:
http://www3.sympatic...eger/index.html

Unfortunately, it seems the site is barely navigable, and all of the artwork is only provided in very small resolutions (damn early 2000s!), but this does at least confirm my suspicion that Rieger did the Keen 6 artwork as he was otherwise never directly credited for it. Nonetheless, to bypass the broken navigating, here's the images directory directly listing all of the site's art:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/kmrieger/art/
