Very games that escape development hell unscathed.

What has escaped development hell unscathed?

I liked STALKER, Prey, Morrorwind, Mother 3, Resident Evil 4, and Team Fortress 2 (when it was released as part of the Orange Box). I think Stalker and Morrorwind bear some scars, but the others were very enjoyable.

Last gen: Alan Wake wasn't bad. L.A. Noire was okay.

Red Dead Revolver was pretty damn fine, although that was less development hell and more one team developed half of it, sold it to Rockstar, they finished it and released it. The gameplay and style also completely changed.
I know not many others liked it, but I enjoyed The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

STALKER and Prey I enjoyed a lot. I didn't follow the development of STALKER at all so when I played it, that was my first time with it at all, having not heard or seen anything. Prey I knew very little about.

Prey 1 went through at least 5 iterations. Tom Hall era 1995-1996, Paul Schuytema (1996-1998), Corrinne Yu (late 1998-1999 - I think she might have been Bitch-X from the Fatbabies leaks). After a couple of dormant years, 3D Realms hired Human Head in late 2001 with Rockstar handling publishing duties until 2003 (R* wanted it to be more like Metroid Prime and attempted to buy the studio through milestone abuse), before finally changing direction one last time under 2K (2003-2006).

Oh wow, I knew of the Tom Hall era and of the final game. I didn't realize it was in the hands of so many people. Is there any media out there of these different eras?

That launch trailer fucking sold me.

"Haha. YOU'VE returned... The only flesh and blood to walk between dimensions. Between our world, and theirs."

TELL ME that doesn't read like classic DOOM END TEXT.

And the music is stunning and beautiful, and the animation is awesome and FFFFFFFIDDQDFFF!!!!

I could give a fuck about multiplayer, but the single player looks damn fine.

They released several hours worth of footage and let youtubers make some snapmap levels

But ... but .... you must be wrong. Because other commenters said that they don't show stuff.

Screw the fact you can watch more SP gameplay than from other AAA products before release, facts are nothing when it comes to commenting in a forum. And then the facts must be wrong, anyways, as they don't support their point of view.

HulkNukem, how can you dare mention something like that ... ??? This footage was linked a few pages before this one (forum default setting) and is completely irrelevant now on this page. Here on this page the consensus is that they din't show anything at all ... and if you stay on this page they are totally right.

Then why they didn't send game for reviews?

Also, about youtubers making snapmap levels and whatnot. Companies sometimes let letsplayers to play the game under condition they don't criticise it and play it enthusiasticly. It doesn't mean the game is bad of course, just they're don't want to lose control on the message before release.

Because Bethesda is Bethesda and Bethesda does weird shit sometimes?
I really, REALLY wouldn't look too far into it.

Maybe the game won't review "good" because gameplay is more like games before the time of most game reviewers of today, and they don't want to risk a bunch of people who won't "get it" giving poor reviews because of such...

Reviews seem to be mostly a mix of "what I think the public wants to hear about this title" and comparison to current games. I accept there must be some relativity, or you would be comparing Atari 2600 to PS4, which are really different things. So from my perspective, if you made something modern graphically, which played more in a style from 20 years ago, many reviewers won't get it.

Nothing more than speculation of course. With a game which needs to appeal to modern gamers AND gamers who played the originating title you will be likely fighting a losing battle anyway... only because nostalgia is a bitch, and whiners are what get heard because the people enjoying it are busy playing.

I like it this way... more people will have to "decide for themselves". <insert horror movie organ strike here>
I have seen enough I like to be confident I will enjoy it... I preordered the Revenant Statue version already.

Ancient indeed. I'm looking at that screenshot and all I can think of is Dead Or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)". There's more 80s in that screenshot than there is gaiety in Elton John.

I think I recognize some Powerslave textures in there, hard to tell because the resolution of pictures is low.

OH HOLY SHIT IT HAS SOME POWERSLAVE TEXTURES INTO THE TRASH IT GOES

I seriously hope you don't actually let stuff like that stop you from playing a mod (surprising enough not everybody has their own pocket artist to make dozens of fresh textures)

He hates everything (especially Doom wads) that use resources from other games

I also don't like art stolen from other games. God forbid I find out anything in the TC I'm currently working on has anything ripped.
