Carmack said Doom was about demons and shotguns. It isn't false but it's an oversimplification. Doom is also about cunning level design and great weapon balance (bar the pistol of course). Brutal Doom improves on it by rebalancing the monsters and weapons, but it strays a bit too far from Doom itself and becomes more comedic, which Doom never was.

I've heard everyone at id wanted to make a future sci fi game but Romero wanted a D&D medieval type game, so thats why Quake 1 with Romero there is medieval and Quake 2 when Romero left is sci fi

When we started working on Quake, we started out with many of the same ideas from before, mainly in the character design of Quake: he had a Hellgate Cube sidekick creature, had a massive hammer that dealt incredible damage, was a total badass, etc. But during Quake's dev cycle, everything completely changed and the game ended up being something that was NOT anything like the original Quake character that John Carmack had designed (back in his D&D campaign).
Maybe someday Carmack will finally create the True Quake character in one of his games. Perhaps he should get Graeme to add the True Quake into their next game! Who knows...

It's been so long since I played Doom 64, and I've only played the original Quake on Saturn. Looking forward to these arriving! Guess it's time to amend the ol' signature down there below my posts.

Boxed, immaculate Quake 64? How much did you pay for it?
It's so cool to own these things. I made the stupid decision of throwing away all my boxes and booklets a long time ago.

That's an incredible collection. One of these days I'll lay my N64 stuff out on the floor and take a pic. Since you're such a massive Doom fan, what do you think of Doom 64, BlackCat? I was looking for it in your picture. So much stuff there, couldn't see it. But there it is, nestled above SNES Doom (which must be one of the best looking cartridges ever). While I'm at it, what do you think of SNES Doom lol!?

I paid £24 (around $37 at current exchange rates) including postage for Quake. For reference, the PAL ones (cart-only) where going for around £6. I actually don't really care if it's complete in box and whatnot. Obviously it's nice and all, but I don't really care. I bought that one because it was the only NTSC Quake up on eBay UK, there's not been one for ages. I live in the UK (a PAL territory), but I hate the crappy PAL versions of a lot of N64 stuff.
I actually immediately separate the carts from the boxes when I get them. I have all my boxes and manuals stored separately, and the carts are all in an awesome protective case, ready to be played at any moment. This actually helps those shitty cardboard boxes stay in decent shape. Opening and closing them all the time just ruins them, in my experience. I keep them like that so if I ever want to sell off my collection, I just reunite all the carts with their boxes and books. Not all my games are 'CIB' anyway. I think roughly three quarters of them are? I dunno lol. I'll find out if I ever go to sell them (which I doubt).
Years ago I sold all my PAL N64 collection to start an NTSC one (hated the PAL conversions). It can be extremely expensive collecting for an import retro console. That's just how the cookie crumbles, I suppose. It's taken me a long time (years), but my NTSC collection is now bigger than my old PAL one was. Doom 64 was £18. Again, rarely pops up in NTSC form on eBay UK. There's always millions of PAL ones for a pittance. It's painful, lol. Still, I gets my full screen and full speed.
All I need now is Turok 3, Quake II and HeXen and I have every single FPS released on the console. Then I guess I'll go for the platformers/collect-a-thons.
PROTIP: If anyone is thinking of starting a collection of anything - get the rare expensive ones first, if you can. They just rocket up in value as months and years go by. For example, Super Mario 64 will always be dirt cheap, but Conker's Bad Fur Day is only going to get more and more valuable as collectors scramble to get such a rare game. You can leave the common as muck ones for a while - they'll still be common as muck when you get back around to them. Maybe a little less, but they won't be that bad (unless you leave it 30 years lol!).

I was thinking about starting an N64 collection. I already have plenty of carts from back in the day. The problem is I don't know how to deal with the controllers. The analog stick in all of them is worn out. My best one is a red counterfeit one that plays like shit because some buttons (mostly the C buttons) get stuck every once in a while.
At least I don't have the NTSC problem as my region is NTSC.

lol, I suppose you can easily go the garage-sale route, or just get them on eBay for way better prices than I usually can. My advice still stands though - get the hard-to-find ones that you want first.

Actually that is a pretty old image and my CD's are not there due to size... at the resolution of that camera they would not have been visible really, but yes, I have collected every shovelware disk and CD I could find since I have played DooM.
Very cool you have that. I also have the BarneyStein Conversion for Wolf 3D, but only from BBS's, never saw it packaged.

I have to give a generic answer as I like pretty much all the different iterations of DooM. Controls are what they are, per game. I just consider that variation part of the games difficulty on a given system. Really I prefer DooM on PC because of the way I prefer to play it... which is to save the game at each door or area then play it a few times with different weapon choices and patterns until I achieve what I consider to be the most efficient, without taking any damage. Some environmental damage is unavoidable, but that is just how it is. I play DooM and DooM II on GameBoy Advance mostly in the last couple of years. It is fun when I get a GBA 4 player game going. The tiny screens do it justice.
