The overdone use of the finishing moves in the trailer was just to show off (I would like to see more shooting and dodging too but they decided to be "edgy" in the last trailer).
In the E3 gameplay demo it's clear that finishing a demon is optional (one of the glowing downed monsters was just shot instead) and in games that have similar features (Duke Nukem Forever, Deus Ex Human Revolution) it wasn't really a problem (well, in Deus Ex the animations were a bit long but it's the one thing that DNF got just right).

I like the fact that not only can you do finishing moves on enemies, but they can do finishing moves on you.

Assuming that's actually a part of the game and not embellished for trailers. But they've done it twice now.

It's not, they had a shitty clueless gamer section on conan where they focused more on the jokes than playing the actual game but you could see things like burning animations for death and such (and it seems like you can skip them to load your game which is good)

They should focus their energy on good level design rather than gimmicky Brutal Doom stuff like that.

While i agree with you for the most part, unless they are a small team animating finishing moves is a job for the animators, not level designers

Ironically, Brutal Doom detractors (omit all the bullshit pulled out just to attack SGT Mark IV) use the upset gameplay as an argument.

Now DOOM 4 will be Brutal Doom 3D. :dukeaffirmative:

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since it was just one trailer. If the next one is still full of showing off this 5+ year old mechanic as the main feature, then I'll get worried.

I mean it could be because what else can they really show off? Everything they've talked about gameplay wise has been about exploration, strategic combat, and weapons/keycards. Cool violence is their mass market appeal, as 90% of current/console gamers don't care/want to pick up items or explore to do keycard puzzles so logically to get the most hype from a broad audience they focused on the violence.

Also the kill moves are like double the speed in the footage with conan playing (you can even compare the mancubus death with the e3 mancubus death and see this) which seems like they deliberately slowed them down for the press footage.

What is it you guys want from a modern/classic-style Doom anyway? I don't get all the distaste. The combat seems fast and furious with enemies everywhere like the old days but with some extra stuff you can choose to do. Do you just want a straight remake or what?

Honestly, I think that Doom isn't something they'll ever be able to get right. Part of Doom's charm is that there was nothing like it back in the day, nowadays there are dozens of similar games.

If anyone wants a straight remake, there is Classic Doom 3 already.
http://www.moddb.com.../classic-doom-3

If anyone wants a EVEN MORE straight remake, there is Doom Reborn for Doom 3 already.

And I bet that when ID release modding tool for DOOM 4, someone will make a mod that change the game into DOOM 1 and/or DOOM 2. Again.

So just wait, for now have fun with the new comer.

Are there going to be proper mod tools for the game? Last I heard the only thing that was coming out was SnapMap, which sounds quite limited.

Probably not. Marty Stratton said they had other things planned but, well, it's Bethesda, and not a god damn soul in the world even bothered with RAGE's tools which doesn't exactly show demand for tools for new ID games like they know they have with Fallout/TES.

At the very least Snapmap seems to have some really impressively in-depth scripting and if they support it with (not-paid) DLC tilesets and feature expansions it could be really good, and if its successful maybe even pave the way for more advanced tools.

All the RAGE tools came out a year or so after the game was issued. I think a lot of the community had either given up or moved on by that point. Also, with the megatexture stuff, you needed a serious rig to compile your levels. 1. Nobody was bothered by the time they came out. 2. When they did, nobody could be bothered to learn the tech.

That box art is seriously lacking. If I ever get it, I'll be looking to vgboxart for a suitable replacement.

What bothers me about the cover is why they chose this:

It's not the best cover, but still better than any other art they made for this game. Funny thing is that even Doom fan art is way way better than what Bethesda made.

Is it because they want Halo audience or something? I noticed that even alpha testers compare the game to Halo series.
Is Halo today considered to be one of the best FPS games or something?
If it's true that Halo tried to copy Doom before, this is quite ironic that Doom now trying to copy Halo. At least PC and PS4 players going to experience better current-gen Halo game this time I guess.

Hate that the game is way too slow, just like Halo, though wondering how good will be level design, I believe alpha had only multiplayer. However, I don't expect something on the level of old Doom games or old FPS games in general, especially not from Bethesda. And not even mods will fix the game if it's garbage because no mod support. Guess it's time to play some Doom. Always wanted to try Doom64 EX.

Isn't that Revenant cover for the deluxe edition or something?

Yeah, collector's edition box cover, you can even get Revenant statue with it (wondering if the quality on the level of that Pip-Boy which came with FO4 CE). Still they really should use Revenant for standard edition as well if they can't make something better.

Even Doom 3 had better covers.
