From what I'm seeing Eternal really looks like a game that will test you when it comes to utilizing the mechanics of an old school shooter. If you look at the Noclip interview with Hugo Martin there he says that they watched the infamous Polygon gameplay video of Doom 2016 and what they learned from it was that the game should have killed that player for not playing the game the way it was meant to be played (movement, "push forward combat" etc.). As a result Eternal will kill you if you play like Polygon.

Can't wait for all the game "journalists" to cry about the game being too hard

It seems Doom Eternal will be twice as long regarding playtime as its predecessor. Also levels are twice as large. Early reviews state concerns that the new emphasis on (easy) puzzles and vertical movement might be a bit too distractive, but in general the game is just bigger, better and nicer. I also like the idea that you mainly get your resources from monsters now, depending on how you kill them. And if you are running low on supplies, it spawns some trash mobs for a quick refill.

Doom 2016 took me 34 hours to complete, so if it's really going to be double that then I'm going to get my money's worth!

That's risky because they are banking on player skill while the general audience (and especially journalists) usually suck at playing FPS well. In order to combat this they made the devs seemed to have made the game very color coded in its looks plus just like in Doom 2016 the hitboxes will be huge etc. and those things will help a lot but they won't make bad player habits magically go away. If you started playing FPS with corridor shooters and military shooters then forgetting all that and learning how to play an arena FPS is quite tough.

It looked easy on old demo videos, and then seeing, I think, Gmanlives playing (on ultraviolence though), it looked hard.
You see a bunch of games claiming to be punishingly hard or dark-souls like, but you don't see much of that in FPS. You see gameplay presentation of a guy playing in easy mode with god mode so you can imagine you will be a badass when playing, they don't advertise by showing some guy struggling in Ultraviolence.

So many unanswered questions in the first 10 seconds let alone 10 minutes. I assume it's all answered in the lore items though. That's great too because most people just want to get to the fighting which this does wonderfully.

How do you mean? I guess in certain respects. really all they've done is front-faced the way combat in the original Doom games worked.Exposed it to the player a little more.

All this talk of staggering, openings, reading the enemy... That's all there in Doom and Doom II, it's just not written out and really exploited. The biggest "RPG" element would be the weapons customization, but it really doesn't seem that different from 2016. More refined, certainly. Hopefully there aren't any outlying vestigial weapons mods. Nothing that feels wasted.

It's a beautiful opening to the game though. I love that it's, very much in the same tone of 2016. No bullshit, just right into the game.

I'm very curious to find out how Doom Slayer got out of Hayden's grip and what happened to Hayden. I know we've seen him in one of the trailers or a screenshot, but the how and why should prove to be very interesting...

Yeah, weapon customization, the runes / perks. Also weaknesses to bullets / plasma / punch... sound like elemental weaknesses.
And the clever build where you freeze and burn your enemies, it's like all the synergies you can find in RPGs and strategy games.
it sounds interesting though, more strategy can be good.

Double Impact got added recently in the Addons list for DOOM and DOOM 2. It is an excellent limit-removing episode for Ultimate Doom, released in 2011 by RottKing & Ralphis. It even won a cacoward back then! For best experience, I highly recommend playing it in one of the classic source ports such as Crispy Doom, Eternity Engine and PrBoom-Plus!

You can download the original version of wad here: https://www.doomworl...ts/d-f/dbimpact

EDIT: Civvie just uploaded a new video!

Wow I kinda remember a penthouse map from a mods pack a long time ago. It was pretty weird. Well, I guess now mods with nudes are pretty generic. (but probably still awkward)

We've come a long way from "we don't want any guitars" to "we want the whole game to feel like a heavy metal album experience."

Well, I hope my GF 1070 is still up to this. But well, since I will stick to 1080p, I guess I'll be OK.

Doom 3? New Shit? Wow.
Yes I have the specs; but Doom 3 is like from 16 years ago. Is it really worth it to buy Doom 3 - Eternal?
Before you answer, can any of those shit kickers aka established developers, make a new game? Is it really that hard to go to a library, read books and make a new 'hero' out of a FPS?
Yes. I am really that burned out of yet another stale, repetitive 'hero', game.

Reading over at the Doomworld forums and saw mention that the specs have disappeared from the Steam store page, with the only thing left being "Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system". Not sure what has happened, but people are saying it's either completely fake to begin with, or they were inaccurate and shouldn't have been released. Not sure if I've ever seen fake specs making it onto a Steam store page before, so it's more likely they were inaccurate. It'll be interesting to see how different the specs will be when they do update the page.

Side question: Bethesda's official Doom 64 release for PC will also be available for people that don't pre-order Eternal or is it a pre-order exclusive bonus? Asking because I hate pre-ordering, but getting a version of D64 that is not a TC or an emulated ROM would be really something.

I seriously doubt it's a pre-order only bonus.

From the official announcements it is a pre-order only bonus.

"In addition, Doom 64 has been added as a pre-order bonus and will be available to download for free on all platforms for those who secure their copy of Doom Eternal early."

https://www.gamespot...-/1100-6460860/

Yes, it is gamespot, but the articel quotes the original statement.

I think there isn't any clear statement regarding that anywhere yet. A pre-order exclusive offer might spice up the whole thing considerably, ofc.
