That's pretty good! I would be very happy with this direction. Again, it would also work for B&W variants if they need it.

One of the "rules" in graphic design is that you don't use the same font for everything. =)

no colours, it's a basic 3d model, but it's what I would do. Keep the basic original design concepts, and smooth and soften it, as for colours, to many options ...

Those remind me of something I did in school. When I was eight they made us do a sewing lesson where we made a cushion and had to make something to sew to the front of it like a message to a friend or someone we liked... Common knowledge; I generally hate the human race, so I put a 3D Realms logo on it. I wish I knew what had happened to that thing though I dread to think how shoddy the logo on it would look, I thought it was great at the time however.



The above logo is subtle, with it's use of red and blue just like 3D glasses.

I do agree with updating the logo, although there are valid points of criticism against it as well.

As much as I love the old logo and the nostalgia I have for it, bringing it to proper high resolution will show it's downsides. Without some additional designing it will start to look more like a 90s pov-ray rendering, especially with stuff like the metallic surfaces and their reflections. The logo is not too far from it already but it is often masked by the rather low resolution and 8-bit palette in the games of the time. A lot of pre-render stuff looked good back then since there was dithering and softer edges due to down sampling that masked a lot of the otherwise sterile surfaces.

I'm not saying that the old logo is completely useless, it just needs some visual tweaks and changes to make it look nicer with true color and higher resolution, it just never really needed that before.
Also the logo doesn't have to be too bulky anymore just to show that we are really dealing with 3D today B)


As for commenting about the direction, I am happy to see that the remains are in hands that seem to be motivated to actually kick some life in to it. Too early to judge anything more than that but I am seriously rooting for you guys. At least something gets done instead of letting legacy die in silence.

But, really, the original logo is classic. And.... may be short sighted of myself, but with it gone... it's the end of an era.

TerminX's logo has a nice style, but I also like that logo that is now used on the twitter page.

Yeah, no. The new one really is shitty looking. As people here in this thread, and several artists i've conversed with have said, it doesn't even show up that well at a lower resolution and had some people going "What is that?"

The logo could literally be fecal matter smeared on on a rusted sheet of metal, for all I care....as long as they create awesome games, I'm in. B)



I do realize that the logo is all we have to dissect at this particular moment, but to me it's one of the least important aspects of a gaming studio. I've played many kick ass games from companies that I thought had horrendous-looking logos. I've also played a fair number of titles that were amazing whose developers' emblems' designs I don't even remember...I guess you get the point by now, but IMHO to critique the new 3DR for how they display their name is pretty much akin to blasting a world-renowned, life-saving doctor because he has a sloppy hand-written signature. B)

That's a bit of hyperbole. Nobody has really been critical of the new 3DR as a company except to say that the new design for the logo is A. ultimately unnecessary, and B. ultimately inferior to the original and iconic design. It's one thing to have a shoddy or sub par design. It's another to have a shoddy and sub par design that is actually confusing people at a glance. Not good. Not good from a marketing standpoint or a business standpoint. You want to be instantly recognizable. The original is instantly recognizable. The "new" Apogee kept the old logo more or less intact, and it worked out just fine.

That's not in the same ballpark.

That's not even in the same star cluster. A logo is an integral part of any gaming publisher. Maybe not as important as the games themselves, but it's up there. Your analogy might be more accurate if the topic of criticism was, say, Frederik's hairdo.
