Rise Of The Triad (2013)

I haven't got the game yet because I would rather much have the game fixed and playable with little to no hiccups than have that.

Someone posted a screencap of one of the most odd glitches I've ever seen, it isn't mine though but just look. :P

This pretty much sums up everything that I've been expecting of Fresch to achieve.
It's amazing how predictable he is.

So far the opinions of this seem pretty mixed.

I think if I do get it I'll wait until at least a few patches have been released

Did you read the comments? The guy was using console commands to make it look glitchier.

"All the footage shown is just me playing the final release of the game normally.
No console activated or anything."

Some of the stuff like the wireframe and the game actually pausing are achieved through pressing some of the Function buttons I think. They are not glitches but I have seen people say on the ROTT forum that they think they are glitches.

Along with everything else, I now feel that I've been straight up directly lied to by Interceptor. I asked in the other thread if the superfluous onscreen score and combo messages would be optional back in June here, and Dave responded clearly in the affirmative:

Yes, you will be able to turn off the combo x2,x3,x4 messages and most on screen text. While most of our guys love it some of our old schoolers definitely want to turn it off. So, we're gonna let you!

Keep in mind, this was well over a month ago. The game released yesterday, and, lo and behold, there's no such option to be found.

Today, I'm browsing the Steam Community Hub discussions to find someone else asking the very same question. To my surprise, Dave responded with a quite different answer:

El Oshcuro said:

We can certainly look into making that an option!

So, contrary to his initial remarks, I guess this option was never really on the table after all. I really would like to give the team the benefit of the doubt, but I can't see how this can be interpreted as anything other than a bald-faced lie.

Edit: Whoops, you ninja'd me, Lunick.

Come on, is it really that much of big deal? He probably just forgot about it.

It is not some coherent story-driven and immersive experience game. Or I simply not give a damn now*. Also, that HUD I was asking about months ago is still going transparent despite there being an option to turn of disappearing. Dave said you'll be able to turn it off. Who cares...

* - can't even bring myself to start 3rd episode.

One thing, though. They did almost hide the fact about checkpoints. No one asked of course(until 2 weeks before release), because it was unthinkable they would try it. And Dave's explanation turned out to be from the bullshit department. "There's enough checkpoints in each level that no matter where you die you'll never lose more than a minute or so of progress".

P.S. Those NPCs in the jail are so out of place. You can't even shoot them. They probably had more than enough resources to do random stuff after they decided against manual saves.

I got up to E3A4 Clear and Present Dangers and there's a lava pit hallway that it seems can only be traversed by jump pads on the walls that are angled in.. but the jump pads are badly tuned so to speak so I always end up falling in the lava... am I missing something here? When I completed the puzzle to get into that area and saw the jump pads I said to myself.... OH NO don't tell me...... =\

Also in the previous level there was a lava pit that had two GAD platforms that meet in the middle and fire chutes on the side... the first fire chute is timed to always push me off into the lava which doesn't insta kill but the rock formations make it really hard to get back out without having to sit in there and slowly die. I've managed to jump on one of the rock formations and rocket jump out of there but it's not easy and most of the time I just die....

However, there's also a patform to the right side when coming into the door with a jump pad and what I ended up doing is rocket jump to that platform.. then use the jump pad to jump to the second gad patform in which the accompaniying fire chute isn't timed to always throw you off and finally get across.... but it took several attempts before I got it right... I know some people would say well.. that's the challenge! But I still think that was pretty badly designed....

On that last part I could have rocket jumped to the platform on the other side from the middle one but it seems they put a rock formation on the ceiling expressly to forbid that. The ceiling on there is pretty low in general so I'm kind of surpised I was able to rocket jump there at all.. for a game that is meant to be old school they have a lot of vertically challenged rooms and obstacles to keep one from rocket jumping a lot of times.....

For anyone who hasn't heard it yet, this is the unreleased Rise of the Triad track by Lee Jackson that was mentioned a few times before release:

The original midi file or whatnot wasn't provided, though. This is just played at the end of the 24 minute credits as part of the video. Definitely sounds a lot like Duke 3D's Gotham at times!

Sounds pretty freaking awesome!

Edit: Lee just told me on Facebook that he got the title of the song wrong. It should be "Wendt - Doug Wendt"

After getting a bit into episode 2, I'm liking the game more. The colour scheme is much better as is the level design. Unfortunately as soon as I actually start enjoying the game I somehow die, half the time from a hidden death trap, and have to restart at a super annoying checkpoint in front of a section of platforming or traps without any of my weapons or items.

This game isn't that bad.
I enjoy it, but only on easy mode and without that nasty metal music.
The jump sections suck.

They're trying, you've got to give them that, but I can only see a tidal wave of venom and hatred from the community if it takes 4-5 weeks for 1.1 to be released. The game needs a patch, a big one, and obviously that considering people parted with their cash then it's only fair that they get what they pay for, but some of the stuff being said in various places online is just unfair and makes me wonder why any developer would bother if all you get is malice when you do something wrong and the odd thanks from a small few for at least trying to do something right.

I want to like the game Engel220, I really do but we were expecting the game to be released near the end of last year, then in the first half of this year and then ended up being released in July. I now have to wait 4-5 weeks to actually play the game since it is unplayable in spots of the game because of it not being optimised well enough. The Steam Hubs are generally a really bad place and users often trash and troll for fun.

What gets me the most is some people trying to defend the flawed checkpoint system in ROTT.

"I'm not very bothered by the checkpoint system, I feel it punishes reckless rushing through the game and favours the re-exploration of previous areas looking for secrets you might have missed."
"Going through the level again because of death is just another sign telling you to be more careful or learn the positions of the enemies. I don't see the fun being able to save all the time because you are too careless about what's coming around the corner."
"I'm glad there is no save anywhere. This kind of game doesn't need it, it cheapens the whole experience".

Personally, I'm okay with checkpoint system as long as it works. It does work in, you know, Call Of Duty. And that's because it's a linear shooter. If you wanted to make ROTT as non-linear as you've obviously hyped it, then manual saving and backtracking should have been important. Instead, we have checkpoints which obviously weren't fit for backtracking thus doors are being closed.

Once they put the product out there and asked money for it, then all bets are off and they should deal with criticism. Now, obvious hated and trollish stuff is another thing, but they're easier ignored.

I couldn't stand the game at all. The gameplay issues outweigh the typical indie production quality issues.

Getting snagged by microdetails while forced to move at a high speed with instant reaction time long range hitscan enemies giving you poor damage feedback while your character yells FUCK THATS GONNA HURT FUCK FUCK THATS GONNA HURT with no option to turn that off and the gameplay being pretty much 'find fastest route, memorize key placement, die, repeat'... I didn't find this fun as a whole.

I gave up at E1M3 after the game suddenly restarted the level after a SECOND TIME without giving me a chance to go from the checkpoint. Some people say it gets better and "rottier" at E2, but is that just placebo effect over possibly more hamfisted attempts at references?

I had low expectations though, I was originally avoiding it since they had that certain "gore expert" on the team... which apparently didn't benefit much with all that poorly huge squibs and 'look ma i modeled a pair of eyes its now in your face' making damage feedback feel poor.

Thanks for the correction. However, it was Interceptor who wrote "DWD" in the end credits:

I actually thought that said "OWO" for a while.

Hate to say because I still like this game, but...... I still on 2-2 and I'm nearly to give up the whole game...even it's just EASY...stupid checkpoints and I didn't made it then I died, back to the last one before those annoying shit...

Cheating maybe a good idea, I guess..... :P

The game just restart the level for some reasons even choose last checkpoint...but it's seems rarely to happened...I only had it happened on my 2~3 runs on 1-1 of NORMAL at launch day, then it always works fine when I play again on next day with choose EASY.

I still don't know what was wrong......

I think you may focus too much on the negative crowd?

I hope they don't wait 4-5 weeks to patch some of the really glaring issues that are literally leading the game to being trashed like no tomorrow. By then the game will be a ghost-town.

Some of the stuff mentioned here (such as menu options.) wouldn't take more than a week, tops.

I'm looking at some gameplay videos on Youtube and to me it seems that the biggest problem is that the running speed is too fast for the size of the rooms. I wonder if there's any simple way to bring it down by a bit.

You can pick Doug. His speed is supposed to be slower than the rest of the team. The option to walk surely would have helped me in jumping puzzles.

There isn't a walk key? All old school shooters had walk. Actually they had autorun which means the default was always walk. Reinventing history? Lol

Episode 2 is filled with shitty first person jumping segments where you die if you fail the jump and badly placed checkpoints. It it by far the worst part of the game and never should've been included.

Still can't play it after the first patch. It better not take another 4-5 weeks. That unacceptable.
