As much as I love my Asus G51VX, it's been an unreliable piece of shit, and my next machine will be a Lenovo.

-Video card failed.
-Cooling fan failed.
-DVD burner failed...twice.
-Wireless card failed.
-Seagate hard drive has always been a chirpy, glitchy, piece of shit. Just recently installed some utility to fix the random chirping/freezing this model is famous for.

Not exactly thrilled with that record. Four years of use as a secondary machine shouldn't cause all that shit to happen.

Also, as far as gaming laptops go, they are fucking pointless. I just had to upgrade my CPU to get this thing to run a bunch of games including Mass Effect 2...which was released the same month I bought this damn thing.

The only trouble I've had with my Asus in the past two years was the wifi failing randomly, requiring restarts and sometimes reinstalls. It would just stop seeing hotspots if you moved it the wrong way. And this is only within the past two months. I opened it up, made sure the chip was in there solid and the antannae attached right, put it back togethet and it works fine now. Only problem now is I must have done something to the right speaker which now is quite fuzzy.

I'm actually trying to get rid of it, sadly. I don't want to let it go but I need the money, otherwise I'd keep it for another two years at least. Anybody want an Asus N53SN? Fantastic little Dual Core for gaming. It won't do Crysis 2 or anything like that very well, but most games in the past 6 years or so work great on medium quality settings.

Will you give MSI a try. Viper? You said their laptops are top notch.

Anyways. I had WiFi problems w/ my MSI GE-60 laptop. I managed to fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. No problems since.

I probably won't upgrade for another two years so although I'm feeling Lenovo right now, I really can't say.

Don't know if I posted this but my G51 had catastrophic motherboard failure two days before I was left for California. I've been using an old Compaq Presario v6000 I upgraded the tits off of. 2.0GHz Turion X2, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD. All hail the GeForce 6150. This thing sucks! I got it for Coryyne years ago, she got a newer one, and sent me the carcass a year ago along with some parts. I rebuilt the damn thing from the ground up to sell it.

I don't know if I'm going to bother repairing the G51. It hasn't been loyal to me. That whole model range has serious heat problems. Besides, I never really gamed on it much, and this Compaq isn't half bad for pornography and /pol/.

My vote is for the Lenovo Y510p - dual video cards in a laptop that's no bigger than a standard 15".

That's what I use. I paid $800 for it about 9 months ago.

Hearing plenty of praise of Lenovo. So I got a Y510P for $899 + $50-ish tax from the Lenovo official site. Saved $500 bucks by doing so! :P

My first i7 laptop. Getting Classic Shell for Windows 8.1.

If you got the y510p series when it was on $899. It'll have a better i7-4700MQ processor than that i7-4510. According the CPU comparison benchmarks, it act's like an i5 instead of an i7. The i7 series usually has 4 dual-threads so it looks like it has 8 cores. While the i5's for laptops has two dual-threaded cores that looks like it's got 4 cores but it's not. My other laptop has an i5 that does this. Why Intel labeled this an i7 instead of an i5 is probably an honest mistake.

Unfortunately it looks like all of the y510p models got sold out. Just one model remains. :P

The 820m is shit. Just get a fucking desktop. If you really need a laptop get a cheap used or off lease refurbished one later.

This one is $766 before shipping. If you want free shipping just sign up for ShopRunner then cancel it after you're sure everything is working (They cover return postage too).

If you really need a good laptop for gaming, get the Y40. It's $50 and has an R9 275M, which is a really good card.

I like my two Asus laptops. No complaints really at all on that front, on the other hand I have had extremely bad experiences with what was then Fujitsu Siemens and (to a lesser extent) with Dell. The Fujitsu laptop wouldn't let me update my GPU drivers at all. Of course that GPU was an ATI... I am not doing that again!

Both companies no longer allow OEM's to be in charge of GPU driver updates.

Also back in the day people would just run ATI Omega Drivers to get laptop support. There was a bunch of inf modded stuff for Nvidia cards too. I used Omega for my old Dell Inspiron 4150. Best laptop I ever owned. Man I still miss that thing. That was the last good laptop Dell made before they went to shit, and the fastest Pentium 4 laptop you could get that wasn't the size of a house. That thing was shoehorned into an old P3 chassis and it still ran colder than it's competition.

I think you may be outraged and disappointed by this but. The Lenovo laptop I bought just didn't work out for me, b/c I didn't like the 24GB SSD + TB HDD. I though it was a solid state hybrid drive but nope It was two seperate things; meaning it's not unified as one drive. I should've gotten one w/ that unified Seagate 8GB+1TB instead. So I Just RMA'ed it for a refund of $764. I went back to MSI and got this laptop.

On the MSI Laptop. I've been noticing everything's been sluggish on Windows 8.1 like applications taking long to pop up when double-clicked on. Turns out it's the HDD that's been acting up according to the Task Manager. I also uninstalled the pre-installed Symantec stuff like Norton Internet Security and went w/ Windows Defender. Next step: Deciding if I want to get a Seagate 1TB SSHD or Crucial MX100 512 SSD so I can clone the stock HDD to either one and replacing it.

This: http://www.amazon.co...2&keywords=SSHD

Or

This: http://www.amazon.co...s=crucial+mx100

Probably the Seagate SSHD since it's $99 and cheaper compared to the Crucial SSD's expensive $211. Trying to save up some money since I'll be paying a $100 bucks a month on my gum graph. Stupid Medicare won't cover it. Damn Capitalism!

Just get an mSATA SSD and keep the stock hard drive. The GE60 Apache has two mSATA ports and supports mSATA RAID.

Also I don't know why you didn't spend the extra $100 for the 860M. That's the best mobile GPU out right now because it's really fucking fast and actually fits in a normal sized laptop.

I think there are a few reasons why I didn't get an MSI Gaming Laptop w/ an GTX 860M.

1: The 850M is a tad cheaper.
2: The 850M has lower TDP than the 860M (45w vs 75W).
3: The some of the reviews on the MSI laptop models w/ the GTX 860M say they can get very hot.

The 860m is also a 45w chip. You're thinking of the 870m, which still uses the old Kepler architecture. The 850m, 860m, and desktop 750 series are Maxwell based. If Nvidia's HDMI implementation wasn't so bad I'd be all over those Maxwell cards, they are an engineering marvel. The thing is I rarely game on the go and I'm usually using a laptop for porn, web browsing, or playing pirated movies on a TV. So yeah, good HDMI is a must. Gotta go Intel or AMD for that.

I'm getting an old Dell Studio XPS 16 for free. It needs a battery and I have no idea what the specs are. Regardless it's gonna have at least 4GB RAM, a 1TB 7200RPM HD, and a 2.8GHz C2D because I already have those lying around.

I'm probably just going to junk this Asus. Shittiest laptop I've ever owned. I've known heroin addicts that are more reliable. Also don't even get me started on the speakers, I've had Pentium 1 laptops go louder than this piece of shit. I've been spoiled by this Compaq in the past four months and after using some of the best laptop speakers ever it's reason enough to ditch it. They are so quiet many web videos are a chore to listen to, and Mass Effect 3 is literally nearly inaudible. Not even kidding. What's the point of getting 60fps in games if you can't fucking hear them?

I tested out Shadow Warrior 2013 on high settings and 720p on my new laptop I mentioned and the fan gets loud. Is this normal?

I might as well stick w/ DOSBox games, DXX-Rebirth, GZDoom, Darkplaces, Hammer of Thyrion, eDuke32 or whatever. Those puts less strain on the components depending on the settings.

Off-topic I think. I'm thinkning a/b replacing the MSI Motherboard I got w/o having to reinstalling Windows 7 in my SSD in 2015. Trying to figure that out on how to pull it off. I may be thinking a/b getting an 3770K too. I'm starting to feel unhappy w/ the motherboard I have b/c of the USB 2.0 & 3.0 problems. It makes that unsuccessful sound whenever I put a usb stick in so I have to unplug and plug it back in to get it right. May have to make a new topic a/b it.

The 3770k's run really hot, but if you are really worried about heat you can always buy a cooling pad for your laptop.
