I think most people agree with you actually! The tanks and turrets were one of the most hyped up parts of Shadow Warrior, and while rare they were fun to use. I honestly doubt we'll get that in this new Shadow Warrior, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Agreed.

I asked SW's official Twitter about in-game interactivity, mentioning vehicle gameplay and the mini RC cars as examples, and their response was this:

"Not those exact things but there is certainly some fun stuff to find and play with in the new game. :P"

I'm already convinced Shadow Warrior 2013 is Hard Reset with a different skin.

The grenade launcher is so satisfying to use and you all know it.

The only thing 3DR fucked up is not making the gas grenades an alt-fire for the grenade launcher. That's my favourite weapon in Duke Nukem: Zero Hour because it's so useful.

And young grasshoppers, Shadow Warrior fans everywhere, it seems your only hope is Deadly Kiss. Lo Wang has been castrated, but No Wang never had balls anyway.

I had a lot of problems with puzzles in Duke. Well, allow me to explain. Duke Nukem 3D basically taught me how to play games. I was 8 years old when I had attained the shareware version of Duke on a CD of a 100 free games. I remember spending a whole week on the top of the building in Holly trying to find out how to exit. I eventually learned that I needed to shoot the fan to get out. After that, I spent 6 months roaming around the streets in Holly because I didn't know how to open doors and the pixelized F1 help screen didn't help. I got a hold of some cheats and dnscottied through every level of the game and went as far as I could until I hit doors that I didn't know what button to press to open. For some reason, the insanely scary atmosphere of Duke was enough to entertain me even if I couldn't walk across more than 10 sectors in each level. Eventually I squinted my eyes enough to read the pixels on screen and I finally learned I had to press space to open doors. I'm sure you can imagine that the puzzles only continued to grow from that point, as I started to learn about masked walls, invisible buttons, etc. So that's the melancholy story of how Radar learned to use a computer...

They didn't say "like serious sam with swords", just that it's in the vein of games like Serious Sam, Painkiller and Duke 3D.

They should have made it in the vein of Shadow Warrior.

One of these things doesn't belong.

Yeah it looks pretty poor, sorry guys. Fighting an enemy in an arena, running up stairs with a RADIO DUDE TELLING YOU SHIT (or telepathy, whatever) than a cutscene - PRESS BUTTON TO STAB - followed by another? This is nothing like the original Shadow Warrior, this is a new franchise with the name on it. I find it kind of frustrating, and I'm not sure why...I think it's because the developers aren't really being honest about what they're making here. I don't mind Serious Sam shooters, but I do when developers describe it as an Old-school FPS shooter - they're more like top-down shooters because apart from the odd flying enemy the levels are normally on a flat Z-level and you fight in arena, move to another, repeat.

The only similarities between Serious Sam and Painkiller are that you get to kill big hordes of enemies in order to progress to the next segment of the level which won't open it's locked door until you have killed every last one of the enemies from that area.
But even them, Painkiller and Serious Sam have vastly different ambients that can never be confused with each other.
I personally like Serious Sam games and they are memorable to me but Painkiller is an all time favorite which I absolutely love and I still play it to this day and I even got the HD remake for unreal engine 3 called Painkiller: Hell and Damnation which surprisingly is working great after a few patches and really does manage to be a great HD remake of the old game provided you put up with the bullshit of also buying some of the most popular remade levels as part of DLC...

As for Duke 3D being in the same league with Serious Sam and Painkiller? Why?
I see absolutely no similarities between Painkiller and Duke 3D in gameplay.. NONE AT ALL!
There are absolutely no similarities between Duke 3D and Serious Sam games either...
The only little tie between Duke 3d and Serious Sam is found between the characters themselves and the fact that Serious Sam has some Duke Nukem Forever jokes throughout the series and that's where the similarities between Duke 3d and Serious Sam stop.
If you really wanted to add another game to the list of Painkiller and Serious Sam, you could have added Will Rock which shares a lot of similarities to Serious Sam.
Even Doom shares more similarities than Duke 3d does simply because in Doom you fight giant hordes of enemies while in Duke 3d you don't.

It's pretty easy to notice that this new Shadow Warrior game shares absolutely nothing with the old game besides names of some characters and the name of the game itself.
I'm sad to say it but this new Shadow Warrior reboot has nothing original going for it.
I would say that the sword mechanics are something slightly interesting but after I played gmod in the past and had some fun with some custom weapons among which there were also some pretty nicely animated and coded swords, I can no longer get excited at this...
From every gameplay video that I've seen of this game, it does seem to strongly indicate that it feels exactly like a serious sam game clone that revolves around asian themed levels.
The graphics are also mediocre by today's standards, so I'm pretty sure that I will not buy this game at all, not even for collection purposes.
It looks like it's going to be a game that will get bought by Serious Sam obsessed fans which I am not sure are that many these days.

Who would have thought that we mainly agree on everything in that longish post (although Serious Sam has a lot larger areas that Painkiller and a lot levels are also not enclosed until you finish the enemies).

Mr.Deviance, I agree with you on every point, including a tenuous connection to the original, apart from Shadow Warrior having nothing going for it. The sword-based combat looks great and original. Balancing a healing power that if you use it produces tougher enemies and effects your Bulletstom-esque score is a neat idea. And tt's colourful. You're mileage will obviously vary when it comes to this, and it doesn't necessarily mean the spaces themselves will be exciting to fight in or explore, but for me it's refreshing to see some greens, blues and reds in a shooter.

Well, technically you are not 100% correct. In original game Lo Wang was following guidance of his deceased master Leep, who was briefly contacting him telepathically (eg. warning him of sumo boss or encouraging him to stand against zilla at last level).

While true, those were A) fairly tongue in cheek (The last one he says "the force is with you, always!") and B ) about 3 seconds long and only at the start of the level. Hardly the same as spouting exposition about THE SHADOWS and stuff (because you see the game is called SHADOW WARRIOR so we need to shoehorn SHADOWS in everywhere)

This game is going to bomb and kill any chance for a true Shadow Warrior sequel. Thanks for devolving the series, Devolver. At least your name is true.

If they actually do what they plan and release the mod-tools some time later we might be able to to turn this trainwreck into a decent Shadow Warrior game.

We only have to remove and/or change the following things

- Completely different (opposed to technically updated) look and fell of the environments.
- Completely changed gameplay mechanics (shooting, health, etc)
- Completely different main character
- Completely different tone of the game (humour, etc...)
- Completely different way of storytelling

Oh, this list reminds me of an important question ... this game is called Shadow Warrior why?

Because it's easy to dust off an old IP and sell that rather than come up with a new and unknown one, even though it's target audience likely never even heard of Shadow Warrior. The same thing is happening to Thief (and WAS happening to X-com when they announced that FPS bioshock abomination, but from what I've heard the new strategy game is a really good game)

Yeah, I know that. I was a bit sarcastic.

Fact is that all IPs really suffered when they changed the original formula too much. But it seems that every studio/publisher has to learn that by themselves. For some completely unknown reason they seem to think: "yeah, all other IPs that changed in the sequels suffered in reputation and sales ... but with ours it will be different"

And this whole "racist" discussion from earlier in this thread is completely BS. I mean, look at Duke in the DNF main campaign. It doesn't mean every white guy in the US is like him. But noooooooooo, for an Asian guy we must change it.

What is next? ROTT 2 without shooting? Left 4 Dead 3 without Zombies/Infected? Blood 2 without blood?

Sadly I would have to agree with that. Especially since the best they could come up with for the characters was spindly looking weak ones for the second game. Some of the levels like the hotel sections where OK but as a whole Blood 2 was a disappointment after the original game. In my opinion it wasn't until lithtech jupiter that Monolith was capable of making decent looking 3D models as well.
