Love that quick note. Too bad he committed a mistake in the install instructions, saying players need to copy dnf.grp and not duke3d.grp into the mod´s folder.

LOL. Glad I'm not the only one. Irks me every time.

I'm willing to tolerate some misuse of the language as long as they don't start using the slang and abbreviations from the texting world.

Considering the ammount of people using "of" in this situation, there is nothing wrong with it anymore.
That's how languages work: new words and new definitions for existing words get created all the time because a certain number of people start using them. It might not be in the dictionnary yet, but I bet it will be relatively soon.

You can't prevent it, it's in the mere definition of modern languages that they evolve and that's one of the way they evolve.

No. YOLO will be added to the dictionary before "should of" is considered proper grammar. Why? Because there is already a gramatically correct way of saying it the same way: should've. Languages are changed when people need to write things in ways which did not previously exist, not when some moron forgets how to spell.

I hope so. Contractions were created to make speech and writing more succinct. It's always good if you're able to convey the same amount of information in less time. However should of takes the exact same time to say and the same number of keyboard presses as should've and therefore offers no advantages what so ever. It's only ignorance that leads to people using the former, which is a shame because it's seen a reasonable amount over the internet.

Somebody's got to get this thread back on topic Posted Image

My first level for this is almost finished (split it into 2 levels because of the wall limit). Don't expect anything huge though. When I played through it and found all the secrets, it took me 11 minutes. You could probably shave a few minutes off if you simply followed the path.

A LOT of slang words and texting abbrevations are already in dictionnaries in many languages.

Completely untrue. Languages change all the time in many different ways, and "should of" is a good example of how synonyms can be created. New words related to things that were only created recently is only a small part of language evolution.

You mean language devolution. So people who write like "lol omgz wut up teh fawk wit dis swag yolo hahahaha" are truly making synonyms and evolving the language? Keep going; this is hilarious.

We're not going to sacrifice the rules of the English language because people can't be bothered to learn to talk or write properly. 'Should of' makes no grammatical sense. It's not what the word 'of' means. It's completely out of context. It's sloppy, incoherent, and totally ignorant. Show me an example of how the language changed because somebody used the wrong word in a sentence. Not misspellings, using the wrong word.

There is one example that bothers me. Instead of saying "needs repairing" or "needs to be repaired" a whole lot of people write "needs repaired". Its so widespread I can only assume its being taught that way somewhere.

My 2c as a non-native reader: "would of" is disgusting. Btw., we already have a suitable thread available. :)

This smells like internet mentality. Just because we're on the internet does not mean you should type like a retarded monkey with aspergers. I really hate that. "1tz t3h innernet, br0. Don't m@2r." Yeah, it does. It brings the whole species down just a small micron every time some moron posts incoherent babble on Twitter, Tumblr, Youtube, Facebook, or on Duke4net(I don't give a shit about other forums, they're dead to me.) Mistakes happen, and that's fine, but mistakes are not "the evolution of the language" or any other such nonsense. "You done f*cked it up!" Now do it right, or someone should smack you in the face with an exaggerated fish.

With all the energy expended in this thread trying to defend a FU** up as anything but a **CK up, you could have saved all that time by simple learning and knowing "should've." About ten posts worth of energy by my calculations. That's a lot of energy on the nerd scale of wasting time. Posted Image

It was a noble effort, Micky C, and I look forward to seeing your maps! Don't try to be a hero now and save this thread single handedly... You're not Duke Nukem, after all.

LOL Micky C. You chose a bad time to bring up your maps. Regardless, I can't wait for them! Will they be some neat standalone releases, or is the plan to incorporate them in DNF version 2 along with the fixed bike code?

That's what they should of done.

No, it's just coming from someone who actually has a degree in studying languages and who's learnt this kind of stuff from lecturers and researchers.

I never said that. Also having aspergers has nothing to do with typing "like a retarded monkey"

mistakes are not "the evolution of the language"

Yes they are, for example that's how some "false friends" (words which are the same or almost the same in several languages but which don't have the same meanings) are created.

That didn't last very long. For someone who claims to have an official education in languages, you don't seem to understand the concept of an exaggeration. Maybe if I had added "fucking" "blue" and a few other words into it, you would have understand.

Horse shit.

You are wrong. You are wrong for every single reason that has been stated, and more.

A plan for the improvement of spelling in the English language
By Mark Twain

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling, so that "which" and "one" would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish "y" replasing it with "i" and iear 4 might fiks the "g/j" anomali wonse and for all.

Generally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeiniing voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez "c", "y" and "x"— bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez —tu riplais "ch", "sh", and "th" rispektivili.

Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.

What kind of question is that? That prank a few months back was the biggest trolling stunt I've ever seen on this forum, and it resulted in a lot of flaming until things were cleared. Gambini has no right to call for deleted pages and banned members after that one.

What are you talking about? I only remember the prank about mod recieving C&D from GBX. Which was idiotic on his part, but at least dealt with fairly quick(but still not quick enough).
