No problem. Children of Bodom, Cannibal Corpse, GWAR (hey, I even like this band but holy shit their new albums are terrible), Devildriver, Lamb of God, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, Ghoul, Metallica (save for their first few records of course), Amon Amarth, Alestorm, DragonForce...

Ironically, I am a big metal geek and yet I happen to dislike all of those bands too (except of course for Metallica from Kill 'Em All to And Justice For All).

I don't think it's logical to list Metallica with the exception of "earlier albums" when these 3-4 albums make up almost half of their LPs.

I think it's more that the band underwent a major paradigm shift from the Black Album onward, and that even when playing live, they sound nothing like they used to back then.

Nah, it was not that big of a change compared to musical changes some metal bands had in the 90s. They still sound metallish. Although, the change in a commercial department was sure quite drastic.

It's logical in that I think they sound like shit after they ran out of Burton and Mustaine material.

Metallica's first three albums are, without a doubt, classics. Cliff Burton's influence post-KEA really added something unique, just a shame that Metallica needed his input as badly as they did. When he was gone, they really changed, and not for the better.

On another note, I am now in love with Down. I've been blasting their latest EP all morning.

It was the metal music in games like Duke Nukem 2 and DOOM that caused me to listen to metal in general. ;) Simply because I liked the metal music in those games. I've heard many of the more popular ones like Metallica, Slayer, Alice in Chains, Pantera (DOOM), and Megadeth (Duke Nukem), and many others. I also have a lot of instrumental albums by Pelican, Blotted Science, and Mastery, to name just a few. I don't have a favorite type of metal; I listen to all types from slow, soft and ambient, to dark, fast and aggressive.

I was going to post this over in the ROTT thread, but I didn't want to derail it much further.

If you look even harder, you can find similarities in other Bobby Prince compositions versus songs popular at the time, e.g. Rise Of The Triad's "Chant" versus Van Halen's "Right Now", or Blake Stone E1M2 versus Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Let It Ride". It's not my place to accuse him of being unoriginal, though, because his work is still pretty damn good, and I would continue to rate his video game soundtracks as among the best in the history of computer gaming, even for games that were never really popular to begin with.

He admitted himself that he deliberately copied stuff from some songs. IIRC Robert Prince was a lawyer as well (or at least did law school or some such) and knew exactly what he could get away with.

The music is still great - but saying that it's unoriginal in some parts is really not taboo ;)

He's lifted a few riffs but he's up there with the greats like Alexander Brandon, so I'll let it pass.

On a side note, I bought a convertible Mustang at the start of Summer and I feel like a douchebag whenever I listen to metal in it...The Ford Mach 460 stereo goes pretty loud. I blasted Cradle of Filth through a black neighborhood back in July and the looks were fucking hilarious.

Can't you turn it down a bit?

The engine is too loud.

Why did you bought it then if it's too loud?

The loudness and overall sound of the engine is PERFECT. I could rant for hours about how great the Ford 4.6 sounds...But the engine is too loud to use the stereo quietly if you have the roof down.

You're a dick sucking redneck faggot :D .

P.S. I want that XTORT cassette super bad, KMFDM is my all time favorite band. I have a bunch of stuff autographed by Sascha. I kept every single thing from the night I saw them live back in 2009...even the dollar coin the LIRR ticket machine gave me as change.

I need that cassette. Bad. You're trading it for that computer I'm getting you :D.

Can't argue with that.

I'm on a massive Stoner Metal kick right now, swapping between The Sword, Electric Wizard, Clutch, Down and Clutch (Clutch are closer to Blues Rock, but they have approaches to lyric writing and sound styles that appeal to Stoner fans as well). Also got back into Buckethead as well, although you can't really label BH as strictly Metal.

Let's revive this thread !

Upcoming shows for me, Archgoat / Inquisition, january 28th and M-Pire of Evil / Obituary the following day. Obituary kicks major ass on stage, and i'm pretty excited to see M-Pire of Evil for the first time (for those who never heard of 'em, it's the old Venom line-up with Tony Dolan on vocals and Mantas on guitars).

Archgoat is fucking killer on the stage. Haven't heard any of their studio stuff, though.

Hey, cool to see someone who managed to catch them live

Never had the chance until now, it's one of my most anticipated show since months. Their demos and studio albums are pretty sick, War Metal done right, and their upcoming one sounds already like one of their best effort. Try "Whore of Bethlehem", it's maybe not their most representative album but it's a killer record.

Although this post is a bit over 2 years old now, I am in agreement with it, having started listening to Down recently. It was hard for me to get into it at first (Anselmo just doesn't have the vocal range that he had in Pantera), but it kicks ass. Ghosts Along The Mississippi in particular.

Edit: Along the Mississippi, not of the Mississippi. Stupid.

Ghosts Along the Mississippi is definitely one of my favourite tracks from that album. Saw Down perform it at Soundwave last year and it kicked ass. The whole set was just great all round.

I saw Down at Hellfest 2010 (or maybe 2011, can't remember), solid performance too

There's also Phil's side-project "Phil Anselmo & The Illegals" who released an album past summer, recommended if you like Sludgy stuff.

That singer sounds like he could be Lemme's ( Motorhead ) twin brother.
