Today is 12-12-12.

Did you know that originally this was supposed to be the date that our reboot of Rise of the Triad went gold?

However, since we started this project we've gone from a UDK game to a fully licensed Unreal Engine 3 title, been approved for Steam and the Steamworks SDK, had the game playable at numerous industry events, and nearly doubled the size of the team working on the game as well as the size of the game itself!

None of this could have been possible without the amazing support you have given us since day one and the support our family and friends all gave us before you even knew the new ROTT existed!

That being said, if the production diaries, developer blogs, time lapse vids and piles of screenshots just aren't taking you deep enough into our development, today we're releasing the first ROTTCast podcast!

In this first ROTTcast, Frederik Schreiber, Terry Nagy, Dave Oshry and Leon Zawada discuss "The Apogee Legacy"

http://youtu.be/Za6og59SX04

The .mp3 can also be downloaded here:

https://dl.dropbox.c...s/Rottcast1.mp3

For an even deeper and very personal look at how this whole thing came together, you can also check out Dave's latest blog, "In the Thick Of It"

http://bloggalog.com...he-thick-of-it/

Your support means the world to us as we press on toward our release in 2013 and continue to create a game that gets bigger and better every day - thanks to fans like you! Let's just hope the world doesn't end in 9 days!

Anyone else get the overwhelming urge to punch their screen at 00:33 seconds into this?

And again at 00:43.

Fresch, I like how you and the team are trying to do something old school and bring back a good old game, but why do you insist on coming across as such a dickhead?

The cigar does not suit you because you look like and are a pussy.

It depends on how you define pussy.

If you define it as:
"Someone who has achieved to build a studio with a full UE3 license, making the first non-id game that was featured at QuakeCon and is proud of and and shows off. Although it is not everybody's taste he already managed to get himself a name in the gaming press (hairstyle icon)".

But ...

onen could also define pussy as:

"Some absolutely random dude who has achieved absolutely anything significant, so that he compensates it with some random ramblings on a fourm while hiding behind a nick and some Predator-Avatar."

EDIT: People know my name (stefan fueger) which can easily be deducted from my nick and is used in other public places. And when I post a photo of mine people said that I really look like in that drawing. Just saying before anybody says I am hiding too.

To get those announcements was due to very solid old friendships between Apogee and id Software founders. - At least try to be realistic here. Posted Image
But hey, whatever , enjoy the ride - I'll wait until Interceptor produced something. Posted Image

I'm getting really sick of all the "jokes" or whatever about people's appearance surrounding this project. Why even give a shit? The game matters, not the dickheads' look.

So what. You think they had shown it (friendship or not) if the game wasn't good enough to open the Con even in it's alpha state? At least think twice about it. :)

Ronan is my name not a nick, I find excessively vain people annoying, if you are trying to make it out that I am jealous then you are very wrong, I don't value money and 15 minutes of fame like you obviously do so much. You are not special because you have something to do with making games. You are not sending men to the moon, you are making a game, get over yourself.

I have achieved many things in my life that I am proud of and I am still quite young, but that is none of your business of anyone else's.

If I took a photo of myself like that I would expect a bit of stick for it too, talking about what Fresch does for a living is irrelevant.

Hiding full identity on the internet is wise. I am not trying to sell something and get recognised like you, so comparing how you show your full name and likeness to my situation as a random poster makes for an idiotic argument.

You are rightfully angry as I have insulted your friend, well tough shit.

Well if some forum mod said it, it must be true then. Now you are beginning to sound like a bitch.

No, I never said so myself. I just was informed that you are one. But then I trust them as they read all of the posts here (and the few posts I read seem to imply that the assumption is not that far off). :)

PS: it was you who started the bitching. I only pointed out that others may have another definition of "pussy". Then you statred to get insulty on me and others. But that is a cute thing which is seen a lot with your type. :)

Whatever, I am done with you as I see no point with arguing with someone who excels at nonsensical, ad hominem posts, you are basically talking nonsense.

While I may have been overly mean about Fresch, at least he is professional enough to not engage in petty squabbles with random people (potential customers) on the internet.

So you can continue to talk nonsense in a failed attempt to sound witty if you like, it will not do this thread any favours. Either way I don't care, you are the one with a dog in this fight.

But thanks for making me watch at least some of the video hehe.

Looking forward to checking this one out. I wonder which studios worked on the previous versions? A European studio and a NZ studio. I can't think of many kiwi companies that make shooters.

Are you sure you are not mixing this one up with anothrr game?

Previous versions? The original was made Apogee. There only were levelpacks.

Oh, sorry. In the podcast Terry Nagy mentions there were two previous prototypes developed that didn't really go anywhere before they signed with Interceptor. One of the studios is in NZ and I have no idea who could've landed that contract.

Oh, you are talking about the prototypes. That's another story. I thought you meant previous finished version. :)

The previous prototypes was created by a guy from New Zealand, from 2009 - 2012, and was closer to what you could compare to the Duke3D HRP.
Unfortunately the quality of the project was very low, and was only done as a prototype of a system on how to quickly update all the ROTT textures, and change the sprites into 3D models.

Apogee wanted to do more than just a texture update, which at that time also couldnt be justified as a "Remake/Reboot".

When we got the license to ROTT, we built the game as a completely original title, rooted in the original source material of Dark War, and based on the key features that made the original title so special.

In relation to the video - Our PR guys took a bunch of old Facebook images, like me with a Cigar, Terry with a mustache etc. and used those in the video.
Those images are not meant to be serious.

I hope you enjoyed our first podcast :)

I did! It's obvious Interceptor is passionate about old school shooters and it's great you guys got the contract. I can't believe that that the team was ready to show anything in 5 months let alone have a playable build at Quakecon. That's super impressive. Cheers for the info and I look forward to playing some ROTT next year!

prove me wrong then.
There is no mention that the alpha of the ROTT opened the entire Con event.
From my perspective, I am very happy that Apogee is still in business. They did a lot of good for start up teams. And I respect them to the full.

The other Apogee did a lot of good. This one - not so much.

Rise of the Triad did open QuakeCon 2012, with a special introduction from ID CEO Todd Hollenshead.
You can find the video here:

You might want to add that this is the Quakecon welocme speech of Todd, which was before the keynnote of John Carmak.

The Quakecon Tweets are also further proof.

It went like this: Welcome to Quakcon. Here is ROTT ... then, after that, John Carmack.

EDIT
Not that the date of Greens post in this very thread had given it away anyways. But if one wants to look elsewhere. :)

What's the best part of working as a virtual team? Well, as our Lead Coder Stefan Madsen says, "You can code butt naked!"

We'll have the extended cut and some new goodies for you next week, so stay tuned!"

I started playing the original ROTT yesterday for the first time, and the game has some pretty cool ideas, like crazy weapons, traps and power ups, but the level aesthetics are usually terrible.
Looking again at the new ROTT footage I'm glad Interceptor is merging these ideas with better map aesthetics. Looks like it'll be fun.

They were more mazes than great level design. Doom did a spectacular job for Level design and Duke was just amazing. I think the issue lied on the oversimplification of the level editor.

I guess it's rather the limitations of the Wolfenstein 3-D engine, even with all the upgrades. ROTT levels are still fun, even if they don't look too realistic.
