80% of all computer users operate on Windows. Of course there's going to be more malware, but that isn't a problem if you have proper virus and malware protection. If 80% of people used Linux, Linux would be just as vulnerable as Windows.

Truth, but as I said I don't like anti-viral software. They slow your computer down. Besides, for me one of the bonuses of having multiple OS' is being able to use each one for what it's best at. Not getting viruses is not a strong-point of Windows. I have to run anti-viral software which steal clock cycles. Won't be doing that, will just be using Linux for internet. Problem solved.

"Proper malware protection" doesn't mean using anti-viral software.

Well whatever, it does mean doing something that I'm not used to doing. I just get nervous whenever I'm on the internet on Windows. I don't like it, and would rather use Linux for internet. There's some sites that I simply wouldn't visit on a Windows partition. I guess I could not visit these questionable sites, but I like big black tits way too much for that.

Like what? Setting up an OS?

I'm amazed you went with Linux yet complain about setting up Windows. It's pretty basic stuff for an advanced user.

I never complained about setting up Windows! I complained that I get viruses on Windows, which I'm guessing in your eyes means I'm stupid. Linux is better for grimy porn sites, end of discussion.

Oh, for fuck's sake... USE STANDARD USER ACCOUNT. Just like on Linux I assume you don't use fucking root, the same is true for Windows. Jesus fucking Satan's Christ, I can't believe how many times I must have said that even on these forums.

How the fuck did you not know this basic stuff? Linux my ass.

Standard user+NTFS ACLs*+Firewall* = PROFIT

* - by default their settings in Win7 are secure enough to not meddle with them.

OK, but if I get viruses from black titty porn.. I'll hate your guts :D

I suppose you could get a malware installed into the user account, but it won't go outside of that to ruin the system itself. If you of course wouldn't input the admin's password when it prompts for it.

I'm gonna drop this question in here since it's related to the whole conversation. I need some advice on this subject.

I was a very stupid person and I bought a Gerforce 610 GT. "SUPER CLOCKED!" It's frankly a very underpowered card.

I need to get a card that will give me a much better performance. I was looking at the Geforce GTX 660 Ti... But that sunofabitch is like, 350 bucks! Christmas is around the corner, of course, but I don't expect anyone to fork over that kinda green on account of my dumbass purchase. (I should have looked into what card I was getting before hand.)

I've had issues ever since I put this new card in, random BSOD's. For awhile I was convinced it was sound related, but i've done everything I can to check that out. I honestly think it's related to the simple fact that the 610 is just an unbalanced piece of ass. I'm basing this on my own personal experience, and what i've seen others reporting with the card. I got the card because it was cheap, and I thought it would be an upgrade from my previous card. Honestly, I don't notice much of a difference.

So if anyone can point me to a decent card that I can upgrade to that's not 350 dollars, where I won't get burned and can play some of the games i've recently purchased on more than "minimal" settings (battlefield 3, bulletstorm, Xcom) i'd appreciate any advice on that front. Posted Image

That should give you a start. http://www.tomshardw...eview,3107.html

If you thought about 660 Ti, then perhaps you should try 560 Ti? I have it and it's quite good.

Thanks Burnett. I read about it, and went and got me a 560 Ti. She's a big ol' thang. Makes that puny 610 look really cheap and flimsy. The card barely fit inside my case! (I had to take out my main hard drive to fit this thing inside!) Also got another stick of four gig ram.

So nice. Thanks for the advice. I'm loving it so far! Posted Image

Which 560 Ti did you get? I have an Asus with two 80m fans. Quite silent on idle.

This is the only one they had that I could find:

Performs very nicely. Fast and quiet. It's HUUUUGE though. Barely fit in my case. Like I said I had to take out my main drive to get it down inside. The only thing i'm worried about right now is my power supply. I have the 500 watts it requires, but I think my amperage is lower than what the card wants. It needs, I think it said 30 amps on a 12V rail, and mine only goes to 24 amps on 12V I think.

Will NVidia video cards work well w/ an AMD CPU? Thinking of upgrading to one of the 300 watt GeForce 630 series by Zotac.

They aren't related that much in a PC to have compatibility issues. I doubt videocard give a crap about CPU in terms of a vendor.

And any videocard that does will probably have veeeery low ratings, since AMDs and Intels have comparable shares in the CPU market (i.e. virtually equal).

Edit: GT 630's pretty low-end, Dust. You could spend a little bit more and get a 640, which has double the benchmark score according to PassMark. It would've been a good idea to do your video card shopping during the holidays.

Intel is leading actually.

We'll see where it goes from here, Achenar. And if the 630 doesn't meet my expectations, I'll go for the 640.

I had trouble running Doom 3, Half-Life: Source, and Portal on Steam w/ the XFX Radeon HD 7750 (I think) and a 500 watt Power Supply on my new desktop. The Source engine games freezes and the sound stutters like a broken record. So I don't know which one's to blame. And Doom 3 locks my computer up.

Anyways I just ordered an new 450-watt power supply and just in case the Zotac NVidia GT 630 fails. Which video card is right one and it's gotta be under 400 watts power consumption?

Return the 450W PSU, spend ten bucks more 500W+ unit.

This model is one of my personal favorites:

But this one is on sale, and is the better deal:

If you want a cheap card, get a 7770 and be done with it. Best value in it's price range. It drinks power out of a sippy cup and generates very little heat.

How a/b this one? It's a 400 Radeon watt card. Thinking a/b gonna put this one in my current computer w/ an AMD FX-8120. Is there an NVidia counterpart that sips power and gives out little heat for my future Intel computer build?

Dude, why on Earth would you get an 8120? It's shit. My Phenom is faster at stock clocks. And it's been discontinued for like a year. The single threaded performance is terrible on that thing.

Can't you just get an 8320 or go Intel?

Honestly, if you want to cheap out on the graphics card, just get a 650 Ti Boost. The 7790 isn't that quick.

I just ordered an i5-3570K and it's on it's way. Getting one component (like the motherboard, computer case, and probably a new video card) at a time. So it's gonna be a few months or so since I'm gonna build a new Intel computer. If the 8320 goes on sale, I'll consider the 8320 and replace the 8120. Bookmarking the EVGA 650 Ti Boost.

My computer has already have the 8120. I think you mean the 8320 or the 8350. I'm planning getting this video card for my i5-3570K build.

Dude, I would rather overclock the 8120, or just straight up sell the thing and put the money towards a better card.

The 650Ti Boost is good but wouldn't you rather have a 670 or 7950?
0

#59

I'm getting the 650 Ti Boost or Superclocked in the future. Not interested in the 670. About the 7950. I'm staying away from Radeon products b/c of their buggy Catalyst thing that's missing options that's impossible to solve.

Like what? I use Radeon Pro to control the maximum prerendered frames (flip queue). That's the only option I've found that's missing from Catalyst.

It helps with glitchy vsync with older software. Plus Radeon Pro has application profiles like Catalyst so I can set it and forget it.
