I put stuff back on shelves, return baskets to the front of the store and if anyone wants to know where something is, I tell them. This job is called a courtesy clerk.

I stock things. Depending on the scale of the store, the job can really suck, though the place I'm working at in Dallas right now is ridiculously easy. I plan/hope to get a CDL and transfer into my chain's transport department next year, because frankly this shit's getting old.

Out of genuine curiosity, how do you support yourself?

I live off my disability benefits, it's not perfect, but it's enough to get by on for the time being. The primary reason I do not wish to work is because I am not qualified to earn as much money as I do already, if I get a job, my benefits will stop and the government will not pay half of my rent for me anymore.

The problem with this country is that unless you are rich or from another country, you struggle to get any education or a job and if you don't work and have about ten children you qill get payed much more than you would if you got one of the jobs available to you, that is assuming you could get one of those jobs.

Don't go to school and don't have a job. I live like ten miles from any employment place and don't have a car.

Parts driver, shipping and receiving, and help keep computers running at a Chevy dealership. They used to be seperate full time jobs done by different people but with the down economy I inherited all 3 and got a whopping 50 cents an hour raise after 3 years of doing them all. Its a real challenge many days, but its better than no job at all.

Full time student (MA/PhD in Biblical Studies) and part time digital media staff (videography and crap like that). I wish I was doing something more along the lines of what I did in college, but I'll take what I can get.

After completing a degree in fine art I found it an unreliable way to make a living (I still paint though) so I worked as a chef for 5 years but got sick of the hours/lifestyle, now I have just completed a course in graphic design 3 weeks ago then did 3 weeks work placement and now Im searching for work at the moment, and not finding it easy.

I love Illustrator and am getting better at it all the time my avatar I drew last week.

Aren't there employment agencies who help people with disabilities get jobs where you are? That's how I got my current job.

Heheh, that's funny, because that sums up all my interests. I like art, but besides the point of art being USELESS from a money-making aspect unless you're a lucky-fucker, I am much too lazy and lack so much motivation that I could never make pocket change off of it. I also like graphic design, but mainly just as a hobby and I don't think I'd like to enter the field as a job, however, I have been seriously thinking about going to culinary school at some point.

Wow that sucks, I hope the pay or perks are good. I imagine at least some of it would be driving or sitting around keeping an eye or something which isn't too labour intensive, so I'd consider that a perk.

Go for it (culinary school), if you love food it will enrich your life. Even though I dont work professionally as a chef anymore it doesnt stop me making amazing meals anytime I want and quickly, having a serious understanding of food and ingredients can only be a good thing and its fun to learn and see your progress. Having said that it is an extremely difficult profession with very long hours (I have often had to work 16 hours straight with zero break and its all gogogo) and their isnt really proper workers rights in most restaurants, thats why there are so many immigrants and illegal workers in the industry which also brings down the pay for everyone else as a brazilian dude will work for next to nothing without complaining.

But if you get in with a good team of guys in a nice place it can be awesome and very rewarding, either way you will eat well for the rest of your life if you do it for a few years. I just couldnt see myself doing that job when I was 50 so I moved on, I also have a problem where I get bored of everything really fast and lifes too short to be stuck somewhere you dont want to be.

Also I might add you dont have to go to school to be a great chef, you can start by doing a short course or start by washing dishes or just blagg your way in, many of the worlds greatest chefs never went to school, you learn everything on the job.

Thanks for the advice, I got similar advice from a friend and the only piece of info you 'left out' was that he said working in the fast food industry makes you look like a joke. I think it's what I'm going to do, just because it's an industry that's not really hurting as badly as anything else I'm interested in and there will always be restaurants. Plus, like ya said, it's actually a useful life-skill.

Working at a fast food joint has fuck all to do with being a chef. Although some of the burgers at Carl's Junior are pretty awesome. The closest I came to doing that was working at Round Table Pizza one summer when I was a teenager. Nowadays it seems like getting any job is a major accomplishment, at least in the U.S.

True fast food is a differant ball game and it lacks the creativity that comes with working in a fine dining restaurant and thats the most rewarding part, I dont have kids to feed but if I did I would have no problem working in Burger king. Well I would have a problem with it but I would have to dig deep just to get by. In Ireland there are nearly no jobs yet people still make fun of people who work at Mc Donalds (if they are Irish), its funny how my country became full of obnoxious snobs after the "boom" in the economy, there are many jobs that I would consider beneath me I guess thats why Im unemployed at the moment but the way I see it is fuck it Im highly skilled in a few diciplines so why should I have to do grunt work again?

Answer: Because my countrys fucked.

Fuck, I really miss Round Table after moving away from California.

I´be been delivering DHL packages in a truck for seven years now, 51+ hours per week. Before i was collector in a motorcycle and before I worked in a bags factory/businnes (and some other jobs mostly related to delivery) Have been working for more than 11 years straight.

Everyday I drive into the fucking jammed road I think the same: when will be the day I´ll seek for a job according my skills. The biggest problem is that those jobs are not well paid here and I raise three kids plus i´m paying a sort of mortgage. That leaves no chance to take risks.

That's what he was saying. If you have a long history of working in fast food, you're less likely to get hired.

Probably bad for me. Most of my jobs are working in retail with the exception of that one at my local computer shop building computers and when I worked at city hall for 3 years delivering mail.
