DeeperThought's post is pretty much 100% spot on - I've never really thought about WHY I prefer coding to mapping now until now and I realised it is because it takes far less time to accomplish something significant compared to mapping, and it's benefits can apply everywhere instead of a single scene in a map. Yesterday I coded in a melee lock-on system and a finishing uppercut attack; it only took me an hour or two to get it basically done but it's something that can affect and change the way you play entire parts of the game, if you're so inclined.

By comparison, I did some map work yesterday and today as well for about the same length of time, and probably added about 10 seconds worth of new stuff to the map (As in, that's all the time it takes to see all the areas have to offer) For people who are hard-pressed for time, coding is more satisfying in the long run because it's adding stuff to the world as a whole rather than a portion of a level.

I can't vote. There isn't a "Lazy mapper" option.

@E.C.S don't worry that's easy to fix, release another map and you vote under the normal mapper option :(

@DT and James, then I guess it's a good thing that mappers has the most votes.

I've added a sound artist option, but coincidentally it's below 'nothing' :(

At this point I can basically do everything (except character modeling) but I pretty much hate doing anything but Con coding since I can just zone out and make the impossible possible.

I rely on other people though to make it come fully alive, which means mappers and artists are extremely important. In mod development that's where things always seem to get hung up. I can complete "proof of concept" versions of most of the code within a week or two if I hunker down and do it, no matter the project/task. But, that's the easy part. Everything else is ridiculously time consuming.

LOL. Yeah i mean not just visit a website and grab some soundclips or rip them from a game/movie but also make proper editing or even create custom sounds/music from scratch

I ticked sound artist and texture artist but mainly in the context of ripping them from other games etc and converting them, if need be into the format to be used in EDuke32.

You are very good at gathering resources, which is actually a very important skill for producing TCs when you don't have paid staff. :(

I find it hard to make accurate choices for this poll, so I haven't voted yet. I can do at least a little bit of everything up there, but some things much more than others. If only there was a slider where you could customize to what degree you can do each task.

How about adding an "8-bit spriter" option? Working with a pre-defined 256-color palette is much different than just a texture artist.

I added an 8 bit artist option, and renamed the texture artist to hi-res texture artist.

What do you mean? If you found a mod you liked to work on, I'm sure the team would help you with importing your work into the game. Especially now that more and more mods are starting to use models and previously there weren't many capable people, 3D modellers should be fairly wanted talent.

I suppose, but I guess nothing being worked on currently is of interest, or I'm simply not seeing all these mods that need help. I wouldn't mind actually having a mod where you're a giant robot pummeling buildings though. that I could get behind!

IMHO you are fucking up your poll by getting too finicky with it. Before it represented the basic categories. "texture artist" should be understood to include all 2D art, both 8-bit and hi-res.

The other problem with adding new categories is that a lot of people have already answered it using the old categories and will not go back to change their results, so the new categories will be underrepresented.

I decided to be modest and only vote for what I'm good at: coder, and EDuke32 developer.

I disagree. They really are different. Besides, I think that this change really does cover all the bases.

This is hardly a major change. I did do some major changes before but that was really early on, and it only affected about 6 people, who I sent a pm with a brief explanation and a link to the thread to so they could quickly and easily correct the situation.

Anywhere else on the planet, that would be a valid assumption. Here at Duke Fandom HQ it's a completely different story. A lot of the 8-bit followers have such a foul attitude to any high-res work that it's become two very distinct and different camps.

Yeah, that's spot on, and will eventually give an inaccurate view of the situation, which is completely counter-productive.

Well so far only one person has voted for that option; James, and he also voted for the hi-res option. This means if I deleted the 8-bit option right now, it wouldn't have any negative impact whatsoever.

However, I genuinely want people's thoughts, so I put up a second question asking if the two options should be kept separate.

I'd say keep 8-bit different, at the end of the day if you edit sprites alot you wouldn't call yourself a texture artist and some people might not put their vote in for that.

I can do coding and mapping. But I must say I'm an incredibly lazy mapper, it puts me off from releasing my project. I get bored very fast to put something great in a map, though not always this is mostly the case. As James and DT have explained, it is very time consuming to make something great in a map compared to coding something great. I love coding, because it allows me to see what I can change with the game or add to the game; like new monsters, new items, new weapons... you name it ! It's just more satisfying for me I think.

I can actually do some hi-res texturing (and some of my dogshit work is STILL in the HRP as far as I can tell, not that I don't want it there, it just sucks.) But I am primarily an 8-bit artist.

Wait, we can vote for several things at once? :(

EDIT: Deleting my vote made it possible.
