I played many of course, and the majority of them disappointed me, especially for single player campaigns. DNF on the other hand pleases me greatly. I can dig that not everybody likes DNF, but it's not so odd that some do love it. And for this lifelong FPS fan, between HL2 and DNF in 2011 I genuinely do not rank any of them above DNF, especially for single player. Just curious, what are your favs there from that timeframe? Though it is all personal taste.

I enjoyed some like say Darkness II is good, but I liked DNF a lot more. Bioshock I thought was okay, not System Shock good but good. Every COD, Killzone, etc campaign is incredibly poor compared to DNF in my book. And then there's say Bulletstorm, such a disappointment for me and again not holding a candle to DNF. And how about say Serious Sam 3 (though after DNF), DNF wipes the floor with that one. And I like DNF a lot more than any Halo for example. I also prefer DNF over Crysis or FarCry games. But, well, I love DNF, ha so we know this. I wish we had more creative FPS solo campaigns these days.

Anyways, bottom line is of course it's all personal taste, just pointing out it's not like I'm any less well versed in the FPS genre because I really like DNF.

play vessel damnit, very under appreciated unheard of indie game

platformer that makes great uses of liquid physics for puzzles, chemical reactions, great atmosphere and has such clever puzzles in it, upgrades overtime all that jazz.

hooked me in hard when i started i played for hours, mark of a good game for me because i loose interest quickly if its not pushing boundaries and doing something new.

Yeah, best DNF mod ever.

But really, I would also recommend Vessel.

Going from a SP standpoint.

HL2+ EP1 & 2
Borderlands + 2
Left 4 Dead + 2
Metro
Mirrors Edge
Portal + 2
STALKER + 2 & 3
Serious Sam 3

They are just few FPS I can name off the top of my head that I played that were 100x better than DNF IMO.

I liked DNF, but SS3 was far more enjoyable to me.

SS3 worked as a game. DNF - oh dear.

SS3 is still getting official updates? Is that something to do with using it as a base for SS4?

I haven't looked at the update news, but last time I read the news for one it was fixes to improve fps, online play etc.

Very nice review PsychoGoatee, sounds like you've missed out on F.E.A.R, came out a year after HL2 and it's truly amazing.

I guess might as well put my two bits, but I have a pretty common opinion about DNF.

It wasn't amazing but I enjoyed it for what it was and understand and feel the difficulty the game had while I was playing.
I don't hate Gearbox or Randy for the release, I'm happy we got it even if it was in that state. Perhaps Randy should have delayed the game 2 more years to basically fix it, but who knows if that was a valid option for the company or the game.

There where ups and downs for the game, the twins death being the part I hated the most.

I try to enjoy Multiplayer now but I feel like it could have been so much more, some weapons could use some tweaking.

I enjoy some of the smaller details, like the two girls (I think it's two) in the shower while you choose your multiplayer look.

Wasn't that what they did? Though for crappy console ports and misdesigned multiplayer rather than fixing it.

i am a bit late i know, but i just finished the doctor who cloned me. i started the dlc when it came out but lost interest at some point. Today i picked it up where i left it and met doctor proton and went to the moon. To my surprise, the dlc was way better than the game and i found myself getting distracted from the mediocre DNF shooting a lot - which is in DNF's case a good thing.
If you made it through the game somehow and haven't played the dlc, i really recomend it. Oh and it was even funny from time to time (still most of the time it wasn't)

Shit, I accidentally downvoted this post when I was looking at the rep counter. Any way I can undo this? I didn't even want to touch it.

*Repost from other topic.
All I can say about DNF is that, most of it went too far, I liked the gunplay, the levels etc. and was fine with the ego bar and other changes because I mainly play on consoles, and those features were in most console first person shooters by then (making the campaign automatically mediocre by any standards). The main problem for me were the unnecessary crude jokes that went too far even for duke. like the holsom? twins stating "we'll get the weight off in a week we swear" basically stating that they'll abort themselves if duke is able to save them to lose weight. Next thing wall boobs, I think that's all I have to say about that. The whole strip club fiasco was only necessary for unruly teenagers, making the campaign itself only a 5/10 at the VERY MOST. The multiplayer though, I enjoyed extremely, I hadn't played an arena fps in forever, and that was probably the most enjoyable part of the entire game. Since it is a campaign focused game (at least it's supposed to be) the rating would be a solid 6, just above your average mediocre Fps. If the game was touted as online only like quake 3, I would probably slap an 8.5 on it, at the very most. What I'm saying is, the campaign dragged the whole game down the toilet in Urea 51. And if it was that shitty, it should've been flushed, or reworked entirely into a nice pristine ornate bird bath. (not literally of course)

Actually loosing the weight is not an abbortion. When women become pregnant they often gain weight due to eating more, once the baby is born they are often fatter then before.

But- it was still a lame joke either way.

Yes the strip club part was shoe horned in, but most 80's action movies had tits shoe horned in also. ... so you could look at that 2 ways.

Most of the sexual content is quite juvinile, but its Duke, it could be fitting. Compared to something like Max Payne 2 with the sexual element with mona sax is played just right.

I just finished the game for the very first time. First of all, I'm not a hardcore Duke Nukem fan. I am however a hardcore Duke Nukem 3D fan. I've been playing that game for about 20 years now and I still regard it as one of the best first person shooters of all time.

When Duke Nukem Forever came out and I read all the negative reviews, I never bothered to play it assuming it was gonna be a waste of time. Until now. First of all, while I can image it being a huge disappointment back in the day and it has A LOT of shortcomings, it is by no means, the worst game I have ever played. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

Here's my 2 cents about what I liked and didn't like.

Liked:

- lots of variety in the levels;
- driveably vehicles, especially the monster truck;
- the return of some of my favorite weapons from Duke Nukem 3D, like the shotgun, the ripper, the RPG, ...
- lots of interactivity;
- duke can still be pretty funny.

Didn't like:

- at times, the graphics look really afwul (although i do think graphics don't matter that much as long as the gameplay is rocksolid, which unfortunately isn't either...);
- 2 or 4 weapon limit;
- no quick save / quick load;
- low ammo carriage (only 5 rockets for the RPG ? In Duke 3D you could carry 50 rockets !);
- Duke Nukem's Titty Citty: why am I in godsname searching for a vibrator, a condom and something to eat; I don't mind spending time in a stripbar when it is overrun by aliens and I have to shoot my way out of there. But this level really made no sense;
- too linear.

Conclusion: Duke Nukem Forever isn't a very good game. But I do think it's quite an entertaining game.

Originally this section was to be featured as more of a fever dream with Bombshell as the lead stripper, but since they cut her out entirely and cut out a bunch of other things, it's just some really weird context-less fever dream that Duke has with no real pay off.
