So Duke Nukem Forever will be available to most of the forum members here in just short of 30 minutes. Some of you are already playing it. Use this thread to vent your experiences, impressions and post a review of what you think of the game.

Keep in mind, this topic is reserved for members of Duke4.net and any duplicate threads or separate "Here's what I think of it!"-threads will be deleted.
Thanks for understanding. Let's keep it tidy, people.

With Duke making an early appearance in Australia this is one opportunity I wanted to make the most of (well as much as possible considering I'm working today). I woke up at 3am (missed my 1am alarm!) and installed my King Edition of the game. Fired it up and before I knew it the time was 5:30am.. I'm working today so had to (try!) get some more sleep so I shut down and let the big guy rest (until tonight).. Had I have known EB Games were going to give me my copy of DNF a day early I would have organised to take today off work! :D

I've got to say that I flipping love this game, maybe I'm just a whipped fanboy but the last FPS I was serious about (post Duke3D of course..) was SS2 so I've missed the whole naughties gaming scene and I haven't played COD or anything else released in the last 10 years to make a comparison. I couldn't afford to keep upgrading my PC and I'm not playing a FPS on a console! (to play DNF I've borrowed a Dell XPS laptop from work, runs sweet from 20-90fps averaging around 40fps). So to me the game looks amazing even with the quality turned down for frames sake, the lounge chairs, rubbish bins etc all look so life like. Duke 3D with polymer HRP is epic but by comparison the models are much more realistic in DNF so I'm happy with the graphics, again I haven't played Crysis or Far Cry so any fanboys of those games may lol at my being impressed by the outdated Unreal engine..

DNF is all about fun and it is SO MUCH FUN! I love the flow of the story, the movement and quality of the enemy models, the NPC's, the level design, Dukes one liners, the tongue in cheek digs at other games/movies, the various challenges and the half-life style puzzles (I won't spoil with details). If you're biased like me and love Duke you'll really enjoy this game and I strongly encourage any Duke fan to get this game, it's been made for you!

Don't let the haters get in your head!! Enjoy it for what it is. The king is back baby! and if nothing else he brought me back to gaming after a decade long hiatus from the scene (until I finish the game and return to married life that is) :dukecry:

Nice review.
One question that is still bothering me and many others, are the blood decals ( blood after shooting an enemy ) there ?

From what I've seen the gore looks to be more or less the same as the demo. Not really a big deal. They probably turned it off due to performance questions. Much like Doom 3 had many of its features nerfed before it was released.

I agree. There "may" still be hope however, as to get the game running nicely I have got some of the special effects and quality settings dialed down a bit.. Those of you with a high performance Dukebox running AA and all features at max quality may have a different result.. If I weren't at work I'd crank up the settings and post my results..

I think they should have added an option to enable the blood.
I am sure i've saw the blood after shooting an enemy multiple times before the game was released.
Not only basing it on the Jace Hall videos but in my own personal playthrough of the demo aswell.

I've been playing all day on PC. Just made it to the Duke Dome. Anyone who was concerned over the quality of the final game after playing the demo can put those fears to rest. It's so much fun, and really creative. I think the marketing did a poor job of showing people the kinda game DNF really is. They showcased just a single facet, while overlooking the good stuff. It has so much diversity, humor and unique elements. I was worried that because I've watched the 2001 trailer so many times, had Duke4.net as my homepage and religiously followed the game throughout the years, it wouldn't live up to the hype for me. Not the case at all. It feels just like a 3DR game, which is what I always wanted. Like the first time you booted up Max Payne, and despite the hype, it was still so awesome and special. I'm grinning ear to ear, I can't believe I'm playing DNF... and it ROCKS!

Good to hear :dukecry: I hope I feel the same way when I play it.

I don't think we should fool ourselves. The game is fun, no doubt. But it's uneven as fuck. Expected by most, I believe but I still thought I should say it.
Half the sound effects are missing from the game, at one point I suddenly start to feel as I'm walking through a mapper's first attempt at a usermap for Half-Life because of the incredibly lackluster texture placement and quality - then at another point as I'm crawling through a vent shaft it's suddenly become one of the most incredible looking vent shaft I've ever seen in a digital medium.

I'm currently in the hive, playing on the PC maxed out on everything. The difference between PC and console is colossal. I could never imagine going back to console for this game. Alas, it certainly has its ups or down but the downs go way farther than it goes up unfortunately.

Luckily the enemies are pretty fun to battle and the human weapons deal out a fair amount of satisfying punch. Not a fan of the laser weapons yet so far at all.
/keeps playing before going to work

Downloaded the game on Steam an hour before release, and started playing as soon as it was available. Played all night and morning (Steam says 9.7 hours :dukecry:) and just finished it on normal difficulty. I simply could not stop playing. At first I was a little bothered by the graphics, but when I turned off the post-processing effects (The depth of field effect is way too much) and got into the game, no problem at all. Some of the effects and scenes were actually quite good.

After reading some of the reviews of the demo I was a little afraid the game was going to suck, but that is not the case, at least for me. Well worth the 45 euros I payed for it.

If you are still wondering if this game is any good on the PC, the simple answer is no. The spirit of Duke has been completely sucked out.
It's not finished. I would say Gearbox were handed the code and pretty much fixed the bugs, made it playable and then released.
Graphics look poor - even on a top spec PC. Goodness knows what it looks like on a console. If this was a Wii only title you'd probably say the graphics were okay.

The start is weird. It's like your running round in an E3 tech demo with technology that was current 10 years ago. Nothing happens. Like your in a vacuum. Press E to open door. Press E to Punch bag. Press E to drink beer. Everytime you do something to boost your ego an annoying music clip plays. The loading all the time between levels is downright annoying. The interactivity is basic at best. The special effects on the weapons and explosions very poor. I stood in a lift at one point with a girl I just saved and fired a gun at her - nothing. You can't even talk to the NPCs and worse still you often have to listen to them before you can proceed. The characters models are poor - even with enhanced breasts. The shadowing is scary on some of the faces. It's like it hasn't evolved from Duke3D and all the good stuff that everybody remembers from that game has been sucked out.

The reason why 3Drealms never released it is pretty clear. What they developed sucks. I'm amazed Gearbox would put their name to this. The review embargo was obviously put in place so it couldn't be slated and stop sales. I've already watched the IGN first take and that sums it up well enough - this game is bad.

If you take away the bad graphics and say okay I can live with them. The gameplay sucks. One battle with an alien had the alien behind a crate continually firing into it. AI - I think they ported it direct from Duke3D. The lack of atmosphere is terrible. Aliens are invading but apart from a few glimpses you be hard pressed to notice. Where's the screaming people, the building exploding, the sense of urgency. Rushing Duke to the battle. You won't find it.....

I can't see them ever making another Duke after this, which is a shame. Then only regret I have is buying this turkey.

i won't downvote DukePuke because of his opinion, but let me explain why i beg to differ:

This game IS finished imo. It has bugs, like every game has. Nothing new, nothing worse but not better either. The spirit of Duke is there. It's actually a duke game when you play it - if this isn't a game with the spirit of duke, what the hell is a game with the spirit of duke :D

Graphics look poor - in some places, yes -BUT there are also places that have been polished and look amazing. I won't spoil anything, but really - it looks so good in some places, that it leaves you wondering, why some other places have such blurry low res textures and bad lightning.
The Wii comparision is total BS. Did you ever play a wii game? Wii Gfx sucks ass - this game however looks mainly like gow1 imo.

The start is great fun. It's you, running around in your duke casino where you can do a lot of stuff - most of it is marked from the beginning with the use button which is annoying, BUT if you turn on your brain, you can find out a lot of hidden stuff. So again, interactivity is there. You need to enjoy it, just think. Combine stuff.
Special effects are something that looks indeed outdated. BUT again - not all special effects do look like that. You can't kill NPC's but this has mainly todo with the Rating for Germany i bet.
You can interact with NPC's especially later in the game. At the beginning there is indeed almost no interaction.
I like the character models and the weapons too :dukecry:

200% bullshit. sorry. Ther reasons are different.

screaming people? maybe turn your sound on? missing atmosphere? crawling through the air shaft is very much atmospheric - i don't know what you expected. Seriously - your whole review looks like a massive attempt to troll the shit out of this game.

i still think this game is awesome.

Im surely close to the end now, But... the cycloid emperor who duke says he'll piss in his eye, i cant get the space command to make duke rip out the hoses.. and the cycloid just grabs me and throws me to the ground.. :dukecry:
why? is this just a random error? or to do with the fact in the demo i dev console spawned the cycloid in the desert and killed him there could that be why? does the fullgame thinks ive already done it? ill re do the fight again soon and hope it works..

I don't get it. How can people complain about the graphics when DNF is obviously a huge upgrade from Duke 3D that we've been playing all these years. Heck, it's even an upgrade from polymer (which looks great might I add).

Kids these days. They all need to be locked in a closet and forced to play Atari 2600 for a whole month.

I don't know about you but I've been playing other games too, not just Duke3D.

DNF is noticeably dated.

Like I said: Go lock yourself in a closet and play an Atari 2600 for a week.

Sheesh. Everyone takes graphics for granted now. When I play a game, I consider gameplay #1 priority, sound #2 priority and graphics a remote #3. I think DNF looked spectacular in the demo.

I really haven't noticed... Graphics don't bother me unless it's a game like Crysis, where you expect them to be the best of the best. That's my opinion though.
