Windows 8 and my first opinion about it's interface.

Why rephrase a post from an argument we had nearly a year ago? You get a -1.

If you read back, you will realize that we did not have an argument in this topic, only you decided to troll me with a post that I only just read yesterday.
Ever since I made this topic, Microsoft has made everything public regarding windows 8 and now I'm in a position where I've personally tested windows 8, unlike back then when we knew very few things about it.
Instead of making a new windows 8 topic, I decided to resume this one.

As for that -1 point, I absolutely don't care about my rating so do as you please.
Not sure if you noticed but I barely visit this forum lately, let alone post on it.
So thinking that you can win an argument with me by giving me a thumbs down is really up to you to decide if it will work.

Nobody's fighting.
You can safely go to sleep, nothing interesting is happening here.
I just wanted to see what others think of windows 8 one year later.

Well, haven't test it, but I won't be getting Win8 unless I have a motherboard change. Which I won't need for several years. But if I do, Win8 will be my first choice to consider. Too bad it's not x86-64 only since it's time to move from x86.

What's wrong with your current motherboard?

Nothing is wrong, but I don't want a system reinstall just to have Win8.

Don't you reinstall windows from time to time, to get a fresh boot?
I admit that ever since windows 7 came out and I installed it, I only had to reinstall it once.
Back in xp days, I would reinstall windows once every 4 months or so.

Anyway, I just googled "windows 8 is" and I really had a big laugh after I saw the suggestions.
Seems not everybody had a change of heart regarding windows 8 after testing it, lol.
When it comes out it should be interesting to see what happens.

No, why?

Did you get lots of malware or something?

I was doing large projects with it and I always ended up screwing registry settings up to the point where I felt it slowing down considerably, when trying to do normal tasks with it.

Well, if you needed to reinstall every 4 month wouldn't it have been easier to test out your projects(or whatever you were doing) on a virtual machine?

Virtual machines were just proof of concept 4 -5 years ago.
Virtual machines were not reliable or fast enough to be used back then.

The role of the PC has changed. Nowadays, you can do most anything that most people do on a PC on your iPad/Smartphone. It's only a small percentage of people who actually need a traditional desktop any more and word is getting around.

Oh, and don't have a go at Martin, as a Poster Child of the end of civilization as we know it, sorry, Console gamer he can only see the 'world' at 720p interpolated up to 1080 - poor thing! <_<

EDIT: Win 8 looks like it's noticeably faster and lighter than it's predecessor. It's got some nifty features as well (system reset without a format).

I am getting more and more bored of all the BS with Windows generally. If it wasn't for all the crap I have to run to get things done, I'd probably have switched to Linux a few years ago. With the advances in virtual machines, I just may yet.

It wouldn't be much of a switch if you'd still be using it on virtual machine.

Technically off-topic, but if you spend that much time on your computer, simply take an hour or so and go through service.msc , and shut down all the Windows services you don't want/need. I did that, my laptop works almost as fast as my Ubuntu one. Even Eduke32 polymer works better (don't ask, I don't know why).

to stay on topic, I'll still will skip 8 and get 9 Posted Image

What makes you so sure that you want 9?
What if 9 will focus on tablet U.I even more than they did in windows 8?

After testing the windows 8 consumer preview enough, I found that the classic desktop shell has been improved a lot and is something that I can accept as an upgrade to windows 7 without much trouble.
However, the real problem I have with windows 8 is the integration of metro with the classic shell and it's usage sa a replacement for some classic windows features that got removed now.
I tested windows 8 enough to realize that without metro, it's actually a really decent upgrade.
The classic shell is not just windows 7 but instead has evolved a lot.
In my opinion, windows 8's desktop shell is much more different from windows 7 than the windows 7 one was from vista.
So for all of those saying that if I can't put up with metro, I should just shut the fuck up and remain on windows 7, I have to tell them they are just ignorant.
I can't put up with metro but I can also see the vast improvements that have been done on the classic shell.
I want windows 8 for every other reason other than metro.
Metro is just like a thorn in my ass, that keeps me from being happy with windows 8.

I will install the final version of windows 8, only if somebody releases a nice clean method of turning metro off.
I know microsoft couldn't afford to make metro optional but I don't care about microsoft's marketing decisions, I care about my tastes and my personal preferences not about anybody's marketing.
I am pretty sure that somebody will kill metro with a hack very soon and then things will change.
If a well done hack that removes metro gets released on time for windows 8's release, it could even have the potential to save windows 8 from total disaster if it gets lots of publicity.
I really don't want to see another vista but ignorance from people combined with justified frustration caused by metro to desktop users, will definitely cause lots of problems to windows 8.
Also, the fact that somebody had found ways to disable metro in the developer preview and now microsoft has taken steps to remove the files that allowed users to disable metro, goes to show that microsoft is fucking stubborn as shit.
This clearly shows that microsoft understand that most desktop users are annoyed by metro, yet they do everything in their power to force metro down everybody's throat...

So far it doesn't. Windows 9 will be 64 only but 100% customizable, even the non-pro version. (as per the MSDN's rumor mill via Mike Halsey) As for the tablet, it is the goal to unify the code base over multiple platforms, similar to the Mac, iPod etc, you simply don't turn it on, or won't see it if your screen does not support tablets.

I meant the windows only stuff like Photoshop, Maya, MD3tool...

Mr. Deviance... try Programs and Features - Turn Windows Features On and Off. If it isn't there now, someone will make a hack to turn it off soon after gold.

And here we go.

If this could actually run Win8Pro then it'd be quite interesting. Although, most likely I wouldn't need it for anything. Portable devices aren't my thing.

The keyboard seems pretty cool. Still not interested in portable devices but that doesn't negate that it is pretty cool.

I do wish Microsoft wouldn't give in to the trends popularized by Apple, however. I like the start button and the mouse.

Yuck, I hate Windows 8! I've got Windows 7 right now, but I really wish I had Windows XP. In my opinion, I think XP was the best system ever.

I really dislike the boxes and how the interface is done. It's endlessly annoying in my opinion, and the idea of touch screen kills me. I think a simple desktop with all your icons and shortcuts is the best way to go.

The Windows XP>Windows 7 thing is mostly just nostalgia and opinion. Don't take my posts too seriously because not even I do.

There was an interesting article on CNBC yesterday about Microsoft's utter faceplant with Windows 8:

CNBC - Windows 8: Redmond, we have a problem

Worth a read. Apparently they won't even support Outlook.

Won't have it out of the box and won't support it are different things. From this article I couldn't understand about what exactly they were talking about. Shouldn't you be able to install software on an ARM Surface? Either way, you probably read it wrong if you think Win8 itself won't support Outlook.

And I don't really see the point of going from Win7 to Win8 in an enterpise environment. Win7 is supported up to 2020, so going through the hassle of changing from Win7 this early is not worth it.

Since Windows 8.1 is coming soon. Anyone want to try it out and see how it improves?

EDIT: 486DX2 feel free to let your humor & bashing loose on Win 8.

Windows 8.1 adds a start menu button.
That, when you click it, does not actually display a menu, but instead takes you back to the bubblicious headache-inducing start screen.

Um. Yay?
