Anyway, I've been thinking about IP bans lately. They don't seem all that effective since basically all a person has to do is change their ISP or move or use a different computer to create a new account and post. I mean, you can walk into a Starbucks with your laptop and register an account after being IP banned and it wouldn't even know it is you (providing you use a different email address etc).
The other problem is that eventually you will ban more than just the person you intended to ban because of the limit of IPs out there.

Yup, that has happened to me last week on another forum. I have changed my Provider recently and when I visted the place for the first time after that I found myself IP-banned before I even clicked the login button. @#@$%

I can't say that either of the options is* viable for me. Changing ISP because of the forum ban? That's hardly worth it. Some with moving.

I understand what you mean but I'm just making an observation. I've moved pretty much every year for the past 5 years or so. Of course, on my college campus there was just one set of IPs (the school actually has like 3 or 4 IPs I think) so if an IP ban were put on the dorm rooms then there is no way around it there; my whole college would have been banned (and would remain banned despite me moving on from there).
But that is the problem: it blocks out sections of the population without actually banning the individual. It is like carpet bombing the hill country in Afghanistan: sure, it fucks up the area but we sure as hell didn't get the terrorists.

Can't be bothered with starting a rant thread so I will just dump my post here.

Somebody thought it would be a good idea to unplug the line powering my Server, Switch and various other hardware, I was just going to sleep and then the bloody laptop starts bleeping to tell me that it has lost network connectivity.

I run down stairs to find that the plug is out and my network hardware is off as a result. Plugged it back in and the switch is broken - I only just got that as well, it'll cost about £1000 to replace that. The server won't boot and when I got it to do so there are just constant error messages about services failing to start and it won't connect to the network, then I load the monitoring tools and it tells me that the hard drive is in critical health.

All-in-all that's around £1400 - £1500 of damage, and guess who will be paying it, you get one guess...

If you guessed me, then you would be correct. I really want to punch somethng right now.

Do you have a bad power source or what? Why the hell your hardware is breaking so often? Also, you should have used voltage stabilizer or something like that. Also, electric equipment shouldn't fail if you just plug the power cable.
