I made a facebook account with a phony name just to write to one person and be done with it. Then after a month facebook asked for a mobile phone declining login if I hadn't comply. I never did, fuck them.
The crazy shit is that facebook somehow were able to recommend me people I know. I don't khow who he did that since I never gave him e-mail password or whatever. Maybe he checked cookies of my previous visits to facebook or something, but it was really strange to me that the first person he recommended was my very close friend.

When I was single I removed my "relationship status" because I was tired of getting online dating ads. Once I was in a relationship, it started telling me to buy an engagement ring. Of course, at the same time it was advertising a gay bar and a singles' site.

Looks to me, this is how Facebook makes so much money. - Search through your shit and give you customized advertisement.

Hey, it's their choice.
I know some people turn off AdBlock so they can support their favorite indie producers/webmasters, like Spoony.

I block ads from youtube, but that's about it.
Okay, installed AdBlock Opera Extension. We'll see.

Exactly. Add-block won't stop the shit Mr. Flibble described. Google too. When you search for the same subject repeatably, it modifies the results with 'hidden' adds on top. Bottom line - AddBlock does shit for me.
I'm not double posting for this. Somewhat related to my paranoia, Google sneaks into iPhone OS.

It technically doesn't because the metadata of the extension says it can't work with current versions of Firefox.
Anyway, Firesheep is easily defeated by enabling SSL/HTTPS in Facebook's settings and installing the HTTPS Everywhere extension.

It's these "dumbasses" that keep the free Internet alive. If everyone blocked ads, sites would not be able to generate revenue. It can only survive as long as ad blockers remain in use by a minority.

Okay, that was the last straw to switching to Firefox from Opera. At least I can see all the avatars on duke4 forums now.

This was for fun on my omniscient neighbour (Mr. KnowItAll), and lot's of help from my friends (I know very little about web programming). I think the intent of the program was to heighten security issues with WiFi? It's been a while.
For what it is worth, I am more fuzzed about my privacy than adds. Adds don't do nothing. Tracking my searches and giving me customized responses infringes in my personal thoughts. Keeping records of my surfing is like being followed by spies. We have now bills in parliament, asking the IPs to keep and forward such records without a warrant. - Oh, yeah, do you have anything to hide, bad boy? When I log on to the internet, it's like walking on the street. I am visible. You can look to your hearts content. When you record my every move and turn it against me, you become my mortal enemy.

I don't really buy that argument. Maddox has kept his site up for years and he has never once put an ad on there.
#5631 Posted 18 February 2012 - 09:35 PM
I keep my website up simply because I want to and it is clear of ads because I want it that way and feel that the expense is worth it (I also don't get enough traffic that it would matter).

It's probably just as well that I do not intend to alter the software or break the law in any way, but that is still a rather ominous message.

That is damn creepy. It basically says, "If we suspect your software is pirated or modified, we will BLOW UP YOUR COMPUTER."

They've probably taken too much heat from the Movie Studios bypassing their DRMs and are now getting pissed that their pirating programs are being pirated? Anyway, why not look at Daemon Tools Pro (advanced), normal licence. Since you plan to be a law abiding citizen all you need is Windows Media Player, technically

That doesn't really make a difference though. He could have put up ads at any time, but he hasn't even though he could have made tons of money at this point.

That doesn't change the fact that many companies that are based online make almost all of their income from selling ad space. Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc. Just like television companies, they rely on selling viewers to other companies.
Maddox doesn't have ads on his page because of his political views and HE HAD A MEANS OF INCOME BESIDES HIS WEBSITE. Yes, he could have put ads up any time and didn't...but he didn't NEED ads to survive.
That doesn't change the fact that multinational companies with employees and stock holders rely on it. If you want to use Google, you should probably be happy that ads exist. If you like a stable economy, you should be glad that Google makes money from selling ad space to hire employees who pay taxes and buy things from companies that hire people who pay taxes and buy stuff from companies and hire people who pay taxes and buy stuff from companies that hire people who pay taxes and buy stuff from companies that hire people who pay taxes and buy stuff....you get the idea.
