I saw a fire hydrant with an "out of service" sign on it...what?

ReaperMan's aroma makes me horny.

We can talk about it, but you're the catcher... ;)

@ReaperMan; Makes me think of all those perfumes with celebrity names on... most of it smells like chemicals and urine to me, this could be a bad thing or a good thing, depending on what you are into.

I should bottle my aroma and sell it, it sure seems to repel girls... maybe gays would buy it? Or possible it works on insects too.

I split the chain on my bike today, my knee hurts and looks like there's a tennis ball stuck in it and my ankle is bruised and won't support my weight as well as it would. My bike is a wreck anyway, thinking of buying a new one, like this;

Sad thing is... you probably think I am joking don't you?

That sucks. Hopefully it's minor enough that it will heal with rest and time. Someone I bicycle with messed up his knee ligaments last year.

I snapped a chain this summer, but luckily didn't crash or sustain any injuries. I was able to fix it on the road, as I carry a chain tool and a few spare links with me.

Yeah, I'm a bike geek. ;)

I need a bike...I would like to ride a bike since it would free me from public transportation a lot of the time...and let me go shopping when my roommate isn't free to drive us.

In the Northeast it's only realistic for 6-8 months a year. I was doing 6-8 months a year in 1991 and 1992 (couldn't afford insurance and payments at the same time, so I dropped the insurance and biked everywhere) and 1994 (no car for 8 months).

Now that I work 24 miles away from home, I don't know that I have 48 miles a day in me, but I'd like to give it a shot.

If I lived closer to work I'd probably commute by bike at least a few times a week. If I lived in the Southeast/Southwest I'd have the option year-round.

@AgentScotty; I expect it will get better quickly, it's only a bit of bruising. I've full-on dislocated it and broken my foot and wrists before, and I won't worry unless I do that again. Didn't expect there to be any other "bike geeks" around here. I usually carry tools myself, but I was only at my grandparents house, little more than a mile away, of course, this would be the time my chain splits when I don't take my tools, I always seem to have some kind of misfortune on that road. In the UK it seems you can bike around all year, providing you can tollerate rain (Personally, I like rain) and snow, interestingly, off-road cycles seem to have a harder time in the snow than narrow-tyred road bikes.

@Mr. Flibble; Aye, you can get places faster than public transport too, over 7 miles I used to get to my friends house around 40 minuits before he did on the bus, though I am a fast rider, I average between 25-30Mph, I could probably go faster if I wasn't hauling a massive ATB around - I swear hit 40Mph once on a racing bike, and I just daren't hit high speeds on my old (1935) BSA, that thing is scary enough at low speeds and metal-rod breaks don't really stop you in a hurry and the pads are expensive - that and the front wheel is busted on that right now and I need a new one making.

If I had the money I'd go for something like this - but it'd be wasted on just running through town on it, hence my interest in the vintage BSA instead, I love vintage bicycles. I'll be starting driving lessons soon though, gonna buy an old Fiat 126 as my first car when I pass I reckon. I'm still likely to stick to my bike for anything in a 20-mile radius though.

I can see it now, "Reaperman's Horny Urine", it will be sold out in the first few seconds of release. ;)

BTW, splitting the chain on Your bike sucks. I remember when it happen to me, it literally took a chunk of flesh out of my ankle and make my ankle purple for a few weeks.

Yeah. I'm in DC so I figure I only have a little over half the year for bike riding. School is only like a 15~20 minute drive away and I figure on a good bike and if I were in (slightly better) shape that wouldn't be bad for bike riding (and it would be free compared to the $1.50 bus fare).
The only problem I'd have would be my backpack and my hat...I like to wear my hat but I also like keeping my head intact (especially since I am going through grad school and all). At some point this year (probably will be after the winter) I'll have to look into a bike etc.

One of my things about public transportation is that no matter how good the system is (and in DC it is actually pretty good compared to other places) it isn't always on time and there can be really crowded times. Since I hate people, the crowded times pretty much suck.

@Reaperman; Deruailers are the worst, I prefer hub-gears. I have a massive scar on the back of my leg from when my chain jammed in the deruailer on my old Apollo, it goes for about 6 inches up my right leg and there was a trail of blood leading back to the house - I lived in the children's home when I did that - the carers would not do anything about it. The back of my leg was almost sliced in half by the sprockets on the crank. Good luck with the pisswasser.

@Mr.Flibble; Try wearing a fedora hat whilst riding, it always blows off. Our busses are always late here, you're supposed to have a 32 every 10 mins, but you don't see them in an hour and then three turn up and whine at you for taking a while to sort your coins out.

Yeah...I have a fedora(esque) hat so I'd like to wear it all day since it has become how I am known. Of course, I have to wear a helmet though because you have to protect that cranium.

#2063

I don't wear a helmet, helmets are for pussies. I don't really think like that, they are a good idea. Sensible people wear them.

I probably should wear them, given that I've split my head open three times already and there was a loose bit of bone near my brain last time.

Yeah, i have derailers on my mountain bike. Even though they do damage when the chain slips or breaks they work well. Besides, having a chunk of flesh taken out of me is harly the worst thing thats happened to me on a bike.

Had bone showing before, but damn having a loose peace of bone near your brain sounds really bad. So what did the doctors do about it?

They took it out, it was in the front of my head where I split it, it wasn't so close that it was particularly dangerous at that time, but had it been left it may have moved and caused problems, I was only a kid when I did it so all I really remember is what I was told and I seem to remember the nurse applying some sort of glue to the front of my head as opposed to stitches. I've had far worse medical issues, but most of them aren't things I think people would like to know about.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother riding to be honest, the amount of injuries I've done over the years.

I don't know whether to try fixing the chain, my legs are extremely strong from years of cycling and figure skating so I have a bad habbit of setting off aggressively in 22nd or 23rd gear so I suspect I would only snap it again and who knows what would happen then. looks like I am walking to my grandparents tomorrow.

Amazingly enough, in the past five years of biking to work (about 2mi), I have had only one minor accident involving a accelerating next to a driveway lip and trying to skip up it. sprained my hand pretty good. Previously I have gotten some nasty road rash on my knees coming down a mountain road. Oh and when I was really young somehow I managed to run into a parked car, i must've been distracted or something.

Oh and weather doesn't scare me, as long as the roads are plowed I will ride my bike to work. I just wish some people would shovel their walkways.

;) I pop my chain at least three times a year and nothing has ever happened to me, especially back when I was younger and popped my chain once a week jumping off all the curbs around the neighborhood. ;) I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
